Daniel Kuehl Obituary

On Saturday, June 28, 2014, Daniel Timothy Kuehl died quietly, at home, surrounded by those he loved, after valiantly fighting pancreatic cancer for two years. Dan had an effervescent spirit, approaching everything he did with optimistic energy and a warm laugh easily shared with the world.

Dan was born on July 27, 1949, in Erie, Pa., and spent the early part of his life here, before joining the USAF in 1971. However far away from Erie his career took him, both he and his beloved wife, Susan, considered it "home," and were delighted to move back in 2012, when the opportunity arose to teach in the Intelligence Program at Mercyhurst University.

After graduating from East High School, his academic background was in Military History. Dan became an undergraduate at Allegheny College in Meadville, Pa., where he studied Civil War history, and became lifelong friends with his Theta Chi fraternity brothers. He followed this with a Master's degree from Temple University, in Philadelphia, and a Ph.D. from Duke University, in Durham, N.C.

Professionally, Dr. Dan Kuehl was both a career Air Force officer (retiring as a Lieutenant Colonel in 1994) and a career educator, with 18 years as a professor of Information Operations at the National Defense University's iCollege in Washington, D.C., from which he retired in 2012 to join the faculty at Mercyhurst. His AF experience included five years at the Pentagon, where he helped plan the air campaign against Iraq, during the 1991 Persian Gulf War, and where he was the division chief for the AF's landmark study of airpower, in that war, the Gulf War Air Power Survey (GWAPS). He was also a Missile Launch Officer in Grand Forks, N.D., during the late 1970s. Upon joining the faculty at NDU, he helped create the Department of Defense's first major educational effort, on what was then called Information Warfare, and until his retirement in June 2012, served as the director for NDU's program on Information Operations. In 2012, he received the Joint Meritorious Civilian Service Award, from the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

Dan met his wife Susan in high school and began a love story with her that lasted over 45 years, and saw their lives shared over two continents and seven states. It was a life shared with one daughter, Kimberly, and a menagerie of dogs, cats, birds, and bunnies. Dan loved spending time with his family, his beagles, watching the birds outside, reading books, and watching baseball games on television.

Dan is survived by his wife, Susan; daughter, Kimberly; his grandson, Zachary; his much loved mother-in-law, June Novet; his brother, Gilbert (Jane) Kuehl; his aunts, Gertrude Koczyk, Ida Sache, Carol Anderson and Mildred Le Baran; brothers-in-law, Robert (Elaine) Novet and Ken (Lydia) Novet; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Gilbert and Jessie Kuehl of Buffalo Rd., his mother, Sophie Borczon, and his father-in-law Robert G. Novet.

Friends may call at the Dusckas Funeral Home, Inc., East, 2607 Buffalo Rd., on Wednesday from 2 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m., and are invited to attend a funeral service there on Thursday at 11 a.m., conducted by the Rev. Robin Swope, of St. Paul's United Church of Christ. Military honors will follow at Lakeside Cemetery, conducted by American Legion Carl Neff Post #571. Memorial contributions may be made to the Humane Society of Northwest Pennsylvania, 2507 Zimmerly Rd., Erie, PA 17606, or Disabled Veterans National Foundation, 1020 19th St., N.W., Suite 475, Washington, D.C. 20036.

From one terrible golfer to another. Everytime I play golf (at best twice a year), I think of you my friend and know your game is much better in heaven!

Kim, my cell phone messages were full so I had to listen and delete some yesterday. I sat and listened to each one. I am so blessed that I was able to save messages from my dad, I hope the same for you. He has been gone for over a year but yesterday he sang me happy birthday, he thanked me for making him holiday meals and he told me he loved me.

We served together as Captains at SAC HQ and conncted again while he was at NDU. We loved to break away once a week to play 9 holes of golf at Offutt AFB--by the way we were both really terrible! I always wondered why a history major was hired to work future missile systems and war plans, but he absolutely made us all better! Keep watching over us my friend

It was a struggle, but Dr COOL really helped me with his spirited style of being. He was not just a lecturer but a man who shared his spirit for what he enjoyed and believed.

Just found out Dan passed. I first met Dan at Vandenberg AFB when we were in class to become missile officers. We were both assigned to the 448th SMS ar Grand Forks, both served as instructors in DOTI, and were neighbors in the same duplex. For the first year at Grand Forks I was a single parent with 2 children one of whom was a toddler. Dan and Susan were surrogate parents and helped me in a way I can never repay. Very saddened to hear of his passing.

So sorry to hear about Dr. Kuehl. I went to John C. Diehl Elementary School in Erie with him. He went by Danny then, and I distinctly remember that he was very interested in and knowledgeable about astronomy. He was energetic, friendly, and on top of things even then. He is only one of a few kids I remember from school, but he was the smartest. I am glad to read about the important life he went on to live. God bless you all.

I will alway have the utmost respect for Dan. He was a top notch professional at NDU, both in the classroom and as a fellow information systems theorist. My deepest condolences to Susan and family.

Dear Susan and family,

My wife Pam and I were so very saddened to learn of Dan's death today. Although I only met Dan once we spoke often times on the phone during research for my book Squadron of Deception. He was of great help and even took time out to come to NC to be one of my guest speakers at my first 803rd/36th Bomb Squadron Radar Counter Measure Unit reunion back in 1995. He gave a most enjoyable speech and it was most obvious to all the veterans and those in attendance his great knowledge, intellect, wit and sense of humor. I am most thankful and grateful to have met and spent time with him. Dan had such great spirit and my life is richer by his presence. My God Bless you and comfort you in your loss.

Most sincerely,
Stephen Hutton

I got to know Dan in London, UK, back in 2008 when he was Conference Chair at an international Cyber conference that I attended. His writing had inspired me before that, and further discussing topics of common interest just added to my respect for this very inspiring and knowledgeable fellow officer and gentleman.
Maybe it was only fitting that I learned the sad news about his to early passing from another of Dan's professional colleagues, Dr Leigh Armistead, during an Cyber conference in Piraeus, Greece, earlier this week.
Rest in Peace, Dan, you will always be remembered as one of the great thinkers and inspirers in the field of Information and Cyber Warfare.

Worked with Dan for many years, a class guy who was a delight as a colleague. Dan had great ideas, was always a good listener and an excellent sounding board.

Dan was a unique person--so natural and loving. I can remember him bringing baskets of Barbies to our house for play between our daughter Ellen and Kimmy. such fun and innocent times. He was a wonderful husband, father, and friend. Bonnie & Wayne Jefferson

Dear Susan & Kim,

Dan was a dear friend who I had the pleasure of knowing while I interned at the Environmental Protection Agency in Washington, DC. Dan who also lived in Burke at the time, never let me commute downtown alone and as a single woman I couldn't of been more grateful to him and his kind nature. He was like a second Dad to me, always caring, always concerned about my safety and never letting me down. Dan you will truly be missed and never forgotten. God needed another Angel and I know he got one of the GREATEST!

Growing up, Dan could have been my second father. He loved Kimmy more than anything and so spent a lot of time making life fun and interesting for kids. I remember awesome road trips in the camper and Scout, singing all Kimmy and my favorite songs, and re-enacting Little House on the Prairie. He was a super caring man and father. He will be missed.

I worked with Dan for more than seven years. He was the consummate educator and truly cared about his students even long after they left the University. Dan was always so positive and cheerful and loved what he did. It was a joy to be around such an enthusiastic and caring professional.
Dan will be sorely missed. Rest in peace knowing that you left happy memories for so many people. May God bless you on your next journey. My deepest condolences to your family in this time of sorrow.

Dan was a friend, mentor, strategic visionary, and rockstar in the IO community "since the beginning." As a historian, he effectively walked the operational line between 'theory" and "practice" as one of the early thinkers about information warfare and national information power ... and was a steadfast voice of reason when educating people on this topic now so central to modern society. Dan was a professional pioneer, an amazing spirit, and someone you not only constantly learned from, but appreciated knowing and/or having in your life.

I've known Dan since the mid-90s .... to say he will be missed is a gross understatement. ---rick

This is such a sad time at any age because we miss our love one. In your time of sorrow may, you find comfort with family and friends as well as having so many happy memories to fill your hearts forever. May, it also bring you comfort to know we can call on God and he will always give us the needed strength to cope with our sorrows.(Psalms 55:16)

Dan, We will all join you someday in the land of the great beyond. Before we do, you taught us all how to live life. Socrates once said, "An unexamined life is not worth living." Your life was examined, admired and respected by many. You inspired many. You encouraged many. In return, you were loved by all. We will meet up again one day, but until that day, we will do our best to live life as you showed the world, the "examined life."

Dan was my respected teacher, long time mentor, generous colleague, and dear close friend. After almost twenty years of collaboration, his absence will be keenly felt and, frankly, already is. Words fail, faith stumbles, yet we are not hopeless. The Almighty is faithful. May the Lord comfort you, Susan and Kim. Dan left behind a global legacy in his many hundreds of students and countless friends, and as long as even just one of us remembers, he really isn't yet gone from amongst us. As for me, I will forget my own right arm before I forget my friend, Dan Kuehl.
