Elizabeth Scully Obituary

Elizabeth "Betty" Jane North Scully, 90, the mother of 16 children with five sets of twins, passed away on August 5, 2010 at St. Vincent Health Center following a brief illness. Born on August 2, 1920 in Erie to the late Johanna O'Connell North and William North, she was preceded in death by her Husband Hubert "Hoot" Scully, a daughter, Colleen Jacobs, three sons: Jack, Brian and John, and a granddaughter, Carolyn Scully. As the 2nd youngest in a family of ten, she is also preceded in death by six sisters: Kathryn Spicer, Mary Plavcan, Edna Mae Rollonger, Margaret Langer, Myra North, Eileen Maloney, three Brothers: John, Robert "Bud" and William North. A lifelong Erie resident, she attended St. Patrick's School and Strong Vincent High School. She was a founding member of St. Jude Catholic Church and Our Lady's Christian School. Prior to marriage she was Executive Secretary at Hammermill Paper Company. She was the CEO of Scully Enterprises, President of the Twins Club, member of the Maennerchor Bowling League, Lake Shore Country Club and the Erie Yacht Club. Since a teenager she attended annual Novenas at St. Ann's, St. Patrick's and the Carmelite Monastery. In 1983, the editors of the Erie Times-News selected her as Outstanding Woman of the Year. During the past three administrations, she was a regular attendee at the White House Correspondents Association Dinner and White House parties. As a devoted mother and Mom Mom she loved spending time with her children and 36 grandchildren, three great grandchildren and many loving nieces and nephews. Betty was the beloved mother to Bill (Debbie) of Erie, Eileen Conboy (Tim) of Syracuse, N.Y., Kevin of Erie, Tim (Lynnet) of Erie, Pat (Nancy) of Stuart, Fla., Mary Beth Manso (Salvatore) of Chicago, Ill., Maureen Glassmacher (Ken) of Fairfax, Va., Tom (Karil) of Huntington Beach, Calif., Terry of Moon Township, Pa., Steve (Katie) of Fairfax, Va., Sean (Andrea) of Erie and Erin Rush (Doug) of Fredericksburg, Va. Friends and Family are invited to the John J. Quinn Funeral Home, West 9th & Liberty St. on Monday, August 9th from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. and are invited to attend Prayer Services at the funeral home on Tuesday, August 10th at 10:30 a.m. followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 a.m. at St. Jude the Apostle Catholic Church, 2801 West 6th St. Interment will be in Gate of Heaven Cemetery. In lieu of flowers the family kindly requests donations to the Carmelite Monastery, 510 E. Gore Road, Erie, PA 16509, or St. Jude Catholic Church, 2801 West 6th St. Erie, PA 16505, or St. Patrick Church, 130 East 4th St. Erie, PA 16507.

Dear Erin and Scully Family,
I only very recently learned of the passing of "Betty". Please accept my sincere condolences. I don't think she knew of any other way of life than SHARING. I am thankful that I knew your mom when I was a teenager, and thanks to all of YOU for sharing her with all of "us kids". A beautiful lady, married to a beautiful man, could only have led to a beautiful family.
