Ms. Uebelhoer: You were beyond a doubt one of the best teachers I had in my 23 years of formal education.

You not only had mastery of the material and excellence of presentation, but very importantly love for your students. You were very influential in my life and thinking.

Beyond that, you opened my eyes to the plight of women and sensitivities to those who are the victims of the scourges of inequality. Thank you!

At the end of August, 2016 - Scot Mertz brought her memorabilia and files for me to store until they can go to IPFW. She and I were personal & Facebook friends and I treasure being able to kindly hold her files and memorabilia in our home till they can go to IPFW. It helps me keep closer to such a wonderful person. As president of PFLAG - Fort Wayne, I know and appreciate her concerns and caring thoughts for all people.

Joan was one of the most influential teachers I ever had. She's the main reason I went into social services and became a caseworker for low income families. She was extremely witty, hilarious and passionate about her causes. I hope her inspiration lives on through all of those she has touched (including me) and the programs she helped create. We will miss you Joan!

I had Mrs. Uebelhoer for Geometry at Luers-the only math class I ever passed. You were right, there IS geometry in real life! My old classmates and I still laugh about you asking, "Don't you girls ever wear lipstick?" We all loved you and I can only imagine the loss for your family. My condolences, Cate

I met Ms. Uebelhoer first as a student at St. Henry and again as a student at Luers. She seemed kind of 'radical', but the more I talked with her and spent time with her, she made me understand that no matter what hand people are dealt, everyone on earth is human, exceptional, equal, and deserve utmost respect for just being able to 'survive in this crazy world'. Joan Daley Uebelhoer will be missed but not forgotten.

Joan's youngest daughter Patty and I were friends in high school. I have fond memories of Patty and I going out on the weekends. Patty would sometimes phone and exclaim "Mom's letting us take the Toy!" and for that evening we'd zip around in Joan's silver Toyota. I remember the gorgeous plants in the Uebelhoers' front living room and Joan always having a project in midst of being accomplished, often laid out on the kitchen table. Joan had the strength and will to better all in her path and veered off that path to better everything else as well. I learned so much from Patty; we had great conversations -- she is definitely her mother's daughter with matched intelligence, compassion and wit. Joan was a leader in the community and a leader to her children. May you all find comfort in awesome memories. Your mother was one of God's most productive.

With heartfelt thoughts,

Joan was so many different things to so many different people. I think the biggest thing for me was that she made all those around her, even those who were against her, believe that change could happen, that one day the world would be different and better, that our actions and voices counted. Joan gave us all the right to stand up and she led us by example with a huge heart and the very best sense of humor. She will always be with me and I will always love her. My SISTER, my mentor, my friend, be at peace now and know that no one could have done it better then you!

I thought I could say "I knew Joan 'when,' but it's more than clear she went on to great accomplishments and contributions after the Fort Wayne Feminists and the Allen County Auditor's Office. The third thought that came to mind - after shock and sadness - is "I wonder if anybody warned Heaven." Rest well, my friend. Your passion and inspiration touched so many. And your mighty spirit lives on.

September 14, 2012

I met Joan back in the 1970s when I was not yet 15 when my mom Julia K. Mast and Joan worked excellently together in the auditors office, but they knew each other prior that, too. They also knew each other way back in the mid-to-late 1800s when they'd dress up and go back in time to become Elizabeth Cady Stanton (Joan) and Susan B. Anthony (my mom). They were invited a numerous of times over all of FW to speak at many different locations such schools telling the story of these two incredible women who fought so hard for women's rights. Joan was a wonderful, fair and giving human being, and I am very honored to have known her. Circa 1870-1890, Anna Howard Shaw (another suffragist) wrote, "Miss Anthony often said that Mrs. Stanton was the brains of the new association, while she herself was merely its hands and feet; but in truth the two women worked marvelously together, for Mrs. Stanton was a master of words and could write and speak to perfection of the things Susan B. Anthony saw and felt but could not herself express." Rest in Peace, Joan. You were truly a special gift to many.

Joan spoke at a health care rally in the Fort two year ago. The wind was blowing her notes and I had the honor of walking up and giving her a clipboard. Went to retrieve it and return it afterward and gave her a peck on the cheek, told her Bryan Brown wished her well. Rest in Peace, Joan.

Joan was a one of a kind woman. Witty, wise, and a wonderful human being. She brought compassion to her jobs... started flextime for women working in the Auditor's office, had packages of toiletries in the Welfare office (she knew food stamps wouldn't cover them) and was a champion of the oppressed. Joan will be missed by so many of us. Love to the family.

I was taught 4th grade by Miss Daley in 1950 at Forest Park in what may have been her first or second year of teaching. She was the teacher I never forgot as she was smart, beautiful, and took special interest in each of her students ! Thanks, Miss Daley for the best start to learning a kid could ever have :) RIP

I had Mrs. Uebelhoer as a teacher at St. Henry's and Luers. In geometry class sophomore year, I remember how she would open the windows in the back of the lecture hall because she said our brains worked better when the room wasn't so warm. To make learning more fun she would have contests - boys vs the girls - to solve a geometry problem the fastest. She was a great teacher, but it was her voice for equal rights for women that had a profound impact on me, and helped shape my own values. I am so happy to have known her.
I've thought about her many times over the 40 years since I graduated. She was without question my best teacher. I was so sad to hear she had passed. To her family, I'm so sorry for your loss.

Joan seemed so much bigger than life, as I have heard so much about her and all the positives she reflected on others. Even though I have never met her, my Dad spoke so highly of her. In this life, it is difficult to speak out and voice our opinion...but Joan seemed to hold nothing back. She seemed like a woman who knew what she wanted and would fight for it. I admire all of her effort in helping people who need help. I admire her in believing in what she believed in. I admire her for taking great care of her children, whom she loved so much.
And I have to admire her for having a great friend, my Dad, whom, believed in the same beliefs as she did.

My sincere condolences to her family.

I had Joan for my intro to feminism course. She taught me how to think outside of the proverbial box. I loved her she was such an awesome teacher a walking fact machine. Quoting facts left and right. To beat her in a debate one would have to get up early and pack a lunch or two cause it would take ya all day long to get one up on her. God bless you Joan my prayers are with your family and friends as they mourn your loss.

Ms. Uebelhoer was a kindred spirit when I moved to Fort Wayne and helped me see that Midwesterners weren't all socially conservative. She was a great professor at IPFW and a true advocate for women everywhere. Here's to you, Ms. Uebelhoer!

Ms. Uebelhoer taught me 7th and 8th grade at St. Henry and Geometry at Luers, but she taught us all so much more. She made a difference in my life. I didn't agree with her all of the time but I loved and admired her. I'll always remember her returning to a chaotic classroom to say, "Big as I am, I can't be in two places at once!" She had big opinions but her heart was bigger than anything else.
