Dear Penny,

We were sad to hear of the passing of Herbie. My cousin, Candy Jarosz notified us. Herbie was one of my Dad's buddies Newmarket High School Class of 1938 and my Dad, Jim Meserve spoke of him often througout the years. As a matter of fact we met you both at the little restaurant down by the river in Newmarket several years ago. Also in December of 2002 Herbie stopped by to see us while visting my cousin, Candy the year before my Dad passed away.

Our sympathies go out to you and your family.

Jared, Kaylee and I send our deepest sympathy to the Philbrick family. My thoughts and prayers are with you in this difficult time. Herbie will always remain in my memories of the 9 years I spent on the Newmarket Fire Department.

I will particularly remember the one time when Joe Butler and Herbie were backing Herbie's engine 2 onto the driveway from the road. Joe, spotting for Herb, very efficiently told Herbie to stop backing immediately after he backed into my truck. "That's good right there Herb!"
We will miss you Herbie !!

Sherry joins me in sending deepest sympathies to the Philbrick Family. I spent many years with Herbie in the Newmarket Fire Department during which time He taught me many valuable lessons. His humor, even in the presence of the serious work of responding to a fire call, was legendary. I'll never forget his answer to a woman who asked "What do I do now?", as she stood in the doorway with a pan of burned hamburgers - and Herbis answered, "I'd put more ketchup on'm."

Herbie will be truly missed, but never forgotten.

Bethi and Family,
My deepest condolences to you and your family. I have known Bethi for many years and although I did not know pepe personally I felt I knew alot about him through Bethi. I loved the stories about pepe with his family, sam adams and of course the little truck with the giant american flags. You are all so fortunate to have had such a wonderful role model for a father. May he rest in peace.

To the Philbrick family,

Sorry to hear of your loss. Funny, kind
and a jolly good soul was Herb. I recall
as a child always playing at your family
home on Elm St.
I recall in recent years how he and Penny faithfully visited my aunt Hanna
at the Pines, and how she loved those
visits.
His kind spirit will never be forgotten.
Although they pass in life they never
leave us.
Love to all my cousins.

A POEM FOR THE GRIEVING...
Do not stand at my grave and weep.
I am not there, I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow,
I am the diamond glints on snow.
I am the sunlight on ripened grain,
I am the gentle autumn's rain.
When you awaken in the morning's hush,
I am the swift uplifting rush
of quiet birds in circled flight.
I am the stars that shine at night.
Do not stand at my grave and cry,
I am not there, I did not die...

To the Philbrick family: Our heartfelt thoughts are with you. Herbie was a wonderful man with a great sense of humor. His smile so contagious. My husband was on the fire dept. with him for many years and I myself dispatched for him. We both learned so much and hold so much respect and affection for him.
He will truly be missed.

Herb (known to me as Chocolate soft serve with no hole)--

I will miss seeing you at Aggie's more than I can put into words. We opened Saturday and I had been waiting for you to show up so I could tease you when you came to the window. I loved joking around with you about putting a huge hole in your ice-cream. :-) More importantly, I am glad I had the opportunity to get to know you. I enjoyed our talks at the window and at your truck! It always put a huge smile on my face to see you and your wife pull in! I will never forget you coming to dollar days a couple of years ago, you got your ice cream and then left. A while later I remember looking in the back of the line and seeing you standing there holding two roses-one for my mom and one for me. That meant more to us than we could ever put into words and those are the memories I will cherish forever. You were a one of a kind, wonderful man and you will be truly missed!

My father felt he was a very lucky man and didnt want anyone to feel sorry at his death. He didnt want a wake for that reason. He lived almost 89 years in good health with a family that supported him and each other, that meant the most to him. He felt gifted to have had 27 years to work on what ever project he wanted, when he wanted after retirement, and he was a worker. I also know how lucky I am to have him as a dad.

Penny & family,
You and your family are in our thoughts and prayers.
Herb was a great man with such a great personality.
Mike always looked forward to visits with Herb when he was in Newmarket.
While Herb still lived in Newmarket you always knew that when the fire tone would go off Herb would be there no matter what.
He will be missed.

To the Philbrick Family,

I was deeply saddened to learn of the passing of "Mr. Philbrick". I have many fond memories growing up across the street from the Philbrick family. I believe your backyard was my first ballfield, where I spent a good deal of my youth. My condolences to the entire family.

Tom, and all the Philbrick family,
You are all in my thoughts and prayers. Mr. Philbrick always had a smile and "Hello, Tom" for me whenever I ran into him. I enjoyed seeing him at the Philbrick house on Elm St, growing up in the 60's and 70's, when I visited with his son, Tom. I was fascinated that he actually had the old ticker tape paper read out, just like in the actual Fire House, that would click out the fire alarm box code when the town fire alarm would blow. Cool. I'll miss seeing you around town, Mr. Philbrick. Rest in peace. Tom, thanks for being my friend at good old Newmarket jr/sr high school and beyond. Those were some great years. Stay in touch, and all my best to your family.

He loved us all!

Bailey...I am so sad to hear about your grandfather. The first time I met him was at AAA in Portsmouth where I work and I was pregnant with Brittney. Everytime he came to the office he would ask for me, sometimes he would forget my name and ask where the girl was that was pregnant...he was so funny! He would always make a point to ask how my little girl was. He was a sweet, sweet man and I will miss him dearly. You and your family will be in my thoughts and prayers.

In My Pocket

I have memories in my pocket.
They rattle among the change.

My memories of you are treasures I carry wherever I go.

They are stored in bits and pieces, parts of a beautiful whole
They give me comfort when I think I am alone.

Yes, I have memories in my pocket, like so much other stuff I keep there.

But of all the treasures I have, it’s the memories of you that are the most precious.

Dear Philbrick family, We are very sorry for the loss of Herbie. We always enjoyed seeing him around town and most recently when we would run into him visiting my aunt at the nursing home. She always enjoyed seeing "Junior" and Penny. Several years ago, both Herb and my husband were on the volunteer fire dept. and he has always told me stories of he and his brother growing up and playing with some of the Philbrick kids. We will miss seeing his truck proudly flying his American Flags. We will always remember his smiling face. Hold onto all your memories. They will help in the hard days ahead.

Dear Penny and Family,
Penny I am in Virginia with my Dad whose health is failing. Don called me and gave me the news last night. My thoughts and prayers have been with you since that call.
Penny you and Herb will always be lasting memories for Don and I as we had some fun times together but more than that the two of you were true friends to us.Herb touched so many lives through church, through being a firefighter, through his family.Whenever I hear the song "Amen" I will always think of Herb. As I've stated many times Don looked up to Herb for his tenacity, humor , wit and ideals. He will be missed so much. Fortunately, he is in heaven and some day we will see him again God willing.
I pray for peace that passes undestanding for you and Herb's family.
I love you Penny and if you need anyhing just call me. I'll be home from Virginia Thursday. LOVE,
MARY BENDER

To the Philbricks: Sylvia and I wish you our deepest condolences at this difficult time. Although we have only met Maggie, we feel very close to your family through living in your old home at 40 Elm Street. Signs of Herb are everywhere here, and we have often smiled as we discovered another one of his "fixes" and special electrical configurations. We had the pleasure of meeting Herb who came over once to unravel an electrical mystery; he was a true Yankee gentleman. As the most recent stewards of this home, we hope we tend to it as lovingly as Herb did. Our most recent project is to resurrect the old garden well. Every Christmas, we adorn our tree with a funny little clothespin angel of Herb that was left here when he moved. We fell in love with this house from the moment we walked through the door. The spirit in the house is warm and inviting; everyone who comes here comments on its coziness. Herb's spirit will always be here as part of 40 Elm Street; please know that the Philbrick family is welcome at our door, and if you're looking for any lost marbles, we have found them!
We offer you our best wishes.
