Eugene Smith Obituary

Mr. Eugene W. Smith, 87, of Frederick, died January 7, 2015.

He was the husband of the late Cynthia O. Smith, and the son of the late Lottie Eleanor Swope and Keller Theodore Smith. He was born October 20, 1927 in Washington County, Maryland. There were three brothers and sisters, two of whom survive: LuCee E. Whitter of Frederick and Melvin Smith of Hagerstown. He was preceded in death by his sister, Joann Marie.

Eugene proudly served his country in the U.S. Army from 1953 to 1955, stationed overseas in Germany, Austria, and Belgium.

He worked for nearly 60 years for Clouse Company, Frederick, previously Earl W.H. Mercer and Son, Inc., as an 18-wheeler milk truck hauler from Maryland and Pennsylvania dairy farms to local creameries. He was extremely proud of his loyalty to his employer, co-workers, and his attendance record over those many years.

Eugene was a member of South End Baptist Church, Frederick, and fondly remembered the years of duckpin bowling he participated in with fellow team members from the church.

Eugene is survived by two sons, Jeffrey W. and Richard E. Smith of Frederick.

There will be no visitation and services will be private. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Frederick County Animal Control (FCAC) by phone at 301-600-1546 or online at their website http://frederickcountymd.gov/15/Animal-Control . Interment will be at Resthaven Memorial Gardens, Frederick.

I met Smitty at Earl W.H. Mercer in 1992. It was my first driving job and he help me getting started. Looking back I wish I would have stayed there longer. I just learned of his passing, but I will always remember him from those early days of trucking. Until we met again.

A very kind and sweet man that we became friends with over the years. Always had a smile on his face and kind words to say. Our business shared the same building as Clouse Trucking and he was always there to help whenever help was needed. He will be missed.

Rick and Jeff our hearts truly broke for you when we heard the news. Bill, Garet and Tyler remember that visit at Smitty's with Bronson. The one who's butt didn't touch the ground when he sat down. Our whole family and I mean whole family has been thinking about you all and praying for you. We think and talk about you often and really should get together some time soon. May God comfort you at this time.
