Ronald Smith Obituary

Ronald E. Smith, M.D., passed away on March 17, 2014, in Los Angeles, California. He was 71. He died with his beloved family by his side at the Norris Cancer Center after a valiant fight against cancer. He was the son of Harry O. and Marjorie Smith and a native of Walkersville. Dr. Smith graduated from Walkersville High School, Class of 1960, and attended Washington College. He graduated from Johns Hopkins University undergraduate and medical school.

Dr. Smith had an illustrious career as an academic ophthalmologist. He was, for almost 40 years, a full time member of the faculty at the Doheny Eye Institute and the Department of Ophthalmology at the Keck-USC School of Medicine. He recently served as Medical Director of the Doheny Eye Institute until his untimely death. He looked forward to transitioning to the role of Professor and Vice Chair at Doheny in its new affiliation with UCLA. He devoted his life to pursuing the Doheny Eye Institute's vision, "to further the conservation, improvement and restoration of human eyesight."

As a young man, Dr. Smith was an outstanding athlete, lettering in soccer, baseball and basketball at Walkersville High. He played for the Frederick Legion team and was a key player on the 1960 Walkersville basketball team that won the Class C Maryland Championship. He received an athletic scholarship to Washington College, Chestertown, Maryland. He loved to play golf and tennis.

Dr. Smith graduated from Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in 1967. After completing his ophthalmology residency at the Wilmer Eye Institute at Johns Hopkins, he completed a fellowship in Uveitis, Cornea and External Eye Disease at the Proctor Foundation at University of California, San Francisco. He returned to Wilmer as Chief Resident, followed by two years in the U.S. Public Health Service as an ophthalmologist for the Alaska Native Medical Center in Anchorage, Alaska.

After launching his career in Baltimore at Johns Hopkins, Dr. Smith arrived in Los Angeles in 1975 to join his friend and classmate Dr. Steve Ryan. Dr. Smith has been at the heart of Doheny for 38 years as a co-founder, along with Dr. Ryan, for the Department of Ophthalmology and as Department Chair of the USC Department of Ophthalmology. Dr. Smith became a recognized leader in academic ophthalmology. He was the department's second full-time faculty and the second full-time Chairman from 1995 to 2013. Dr. Smith dedicated his career to the USC Department of Ophthalmology and the Keck School of Medicine and, working with Dr. Ryan, took great pride in helping to raise USC's stature in both the clinical and academic research arenas.

Dr. Smith was a warmhearted man who truly loved people. His humility truly belied his international reputation. He greatly enjoyed training and developing physicians at the early stages of their careers. He was particularly proud that over 26 alumni of the Ophthalmology International Fellowship Program had assumed Chair positions outside the U.S. In the U.S., 10 graduates of the USC Ophthalmology residency, fellowship or faculty currently hold Chair positions. He valued tremendously his many professional relationships and close friendships he developed with these individuals.

Dr. Smith held, at one time or another, many of the most influential positions in ophthalmology. He was a Past President of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and served for more than ten years on the Academy Board of Trustees. He was past Chair and Board member of the American Board of Ophthalmology. He was past vice-chairman for the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology. He was also a member of honorary societies, including the American Ophthalmological Society, Academia Ophthalmologica Internationalis and the Johns Hopkins Society of Scholars. He was a member of the Board of Trustees of the Braille Institute of American (Los Angeles) which awarded him the "Light Award." He was awarded the Gold Medal of the International Uveitis Study Group, the Castroviejo Medal of the Cornea Society, the Lifetime Achievement Award of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, to name a few.

Dr. Smith is survived by his wife, Suzette, Dr. Sara Watt Smith, his ex-wife and their children, daughter Kelly Parker, son-in-law John, grandsons Cole and Austin; son, Dr. Matthew Smith, daughter-in-law Tirza, granddaughters Sophia, and Catalina; his brother, Dick Smith, sister-in-law Ann and nephews, Michael and Mark. He was predeceased by his parents Harry O. and Marjorie Smith of Walkersville, Maryland.

Dr. Smith was a tremendous role model for all young physicians. I feel blessed to have done research under his guidance as a medical student...I really enjoyed our weekly meetings and his sense of humor. He gave me (and my family) a wonderful opportunity by selecting me for the residency program at USC/Doheny and I will be forever grateful. May he rest in peace and may his family find strength through this difficult time.

I had the honor of being a resident under Dr. Smith from 2005-2008. Residency was a tough time, but we all enjoyed Friday morning rounds with our Chairman Ron Smith. In his busy schedule, he took time to meet with us each week. I so enjoyed his warmth and humor and time in his clinic. I am saddened by his passing and grateful for the time I trained under him. My condolences to his family who must so miss him dearly.

Many Condolences to the Smith Family and the numerous people that he has touched over the years.

Dr. Smith made a lasting impact on my career and my life. I valued his mentorship and wisdom during my training. I always admired his generosity and sense of humor. As a Chairman, Dr. Smith cared deeply about his students and made it a priority to look after us. I will always remember our Friday Chairman Rounds where we candidly chatted about ophthalmology, medicine, sports and life. His sense of humor made everyone feel comfortable and at ease in his presence. He impacted my life in a deep and meaningful way; and I am grateful for that.

Dear Suzette, Ron's family, and the Doheny family.
Ron's professional excellence and the impact he had on patients' health and lives is well known. He was so well - respected among his colleagues and admired by those he taught and touched. I was part of the clinical staff 25 years ago and Ron was one of the brightest lights at work. He was fun, generous, kind, and supportive of all the work being done at DEI. I was fortunate to stay in touch with him through my dear friend Mary. He was always a joy to be around.
I am so very sorry for your loss, so grateful to have known him, and I will remember him well. I hope the wonderful memories you made together over so many years will bring some comfort. I will keep you in my thoughts. Lindy

My deepest sympathies to the family, friends, colleagues and students of this wonderful man.

One of Dr. Smith's most illustrious patients, Betty Clark Mong, proceeded him in death five months ago. For years the two of them welcomed new doctors to opening day of their education program at the ophthalmology department of the Doheny Eye Institute and the Keck School of Medicine of the University of Southern California with inspirational speeches. Betty was overwhelmed with Dr. Smith's kindness and generosity when he agreed to write the introduction and edit two chapters for a soon to be published book about Betty entitled A Woman of Vision. He wrote “Betty has inspired me personally to become a better physician for my patients, a better leader and teacher for my students, a better husband and parent, and a better person.” Dr. Smith has, undeniably, done the same, if not more, for the thousands of lives he has touched as a, physician, teacher, family man, and a friend. May he rest in sweet, gentle peace.

May God be with Ron's family during this difficult time. Ron was a good friend during

My wife Susan and I want to express our deepest heartfelt sympathy to his wife Suzette on the passing away of her beloved Ron. Our thoughts and prayers are with you and the entire Smith family during your time of great personal loss.
Ron was a wonderful human being that I was honored to call my friend. He has left this world a better place, because of all of the people whose lives that he touched, his legendary accomplishments in opthalmology, his superb leadership skills, his mentorship to his faculty, fellows, resident, and students, He was a brilliant scientist and leader and was loved and respected by everyone. His humility and good nature were something that always stood out.
I was the Chairman of his search committee that led to Dean Ryan appointing him as Chairman of the Department of Opthalmology at
KSOM. It was an easy decision. Ron Smith and Steve Ryan's contributions to USC Medicine are historic and unmatched. The Doheny Eye Institute was built by the vision of these two dear friends and worldwide giants in the field of Opthalmology.
I will personally miss my dear friend and colleague.
God Bless the Smith family.
