ROBERT JOHNSON Obituary

Bob Johnson was born on a farm near Beresford, South Dakota (formerly known as Paris of the Dakota Territory) on January 15, 1920. He grew up on the prairie with his father George, and mother Fannie Fern and his brother and sisters, Edward, Fern and Hazel. Bob met his future bride, Lois Marie, a red haired beauty with a personality to match, while in college at South Dakota State University. They were married for 60 years until Lois' death in 2003. After being discharged from the U.S. Army after WWII, they were driving to Oregon; they stopped in Fresno and never left their adopted city of Fresno. Bob passed away on Wednesday, February 1, 2012, at the age of 92. Bob went from the South Dakota farm to become both the owner and pharmacist at Johnson's Community Pharmacy on Fresno Street for many years. He dispensed friendly and timely advice along with the prescriptions to the many patients over the decades that he worked at his pharmacy. His career was unfortunately cut short by the decreased visual acuity that accompanies macular degeneration. In his spare time, he became an accomplished bowler and golfer. He continued to golf despite his blindness thanks to his golfing buddies that would spot the balls for him. He finally gave up golfing at age 89 but still could score less than his son with excellent vision. Bob and Lois are survived by their daughter, Candy and her husband Gus of Fresno, and their son, Steven Johnson and his wife Maria of Norfolk, Virginia and their granddaughter, Sarah Johnson of Washington, D.C. A Memorial Service will be held at People's Church on Tuesday February 7, 2012, at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to Christian Blind Mission International www.cbm.org at 450 East Park Avenue Greenville, SC 29601. This is the oldest and largest ministry with the primary purpose of improving the quality of life for the blind and disabled living in the world's most disadvantaged societies.
