BROWN, SR., DR. THOMAS 'TOM' A., 63
Gainesville - Dr. Thomas (Tom) A. Brown Sr., age 63, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, August 5, 2014 at the E.T. York Haven Hospice Care Center. Tom was born in Cincinnati, Ohio to Jim and Dorothy Brown and moved to Ormond Beach, FL when he was 13. Tom received a Bachelors of Science in Chemistry and a PhD in Microbiology from the University of Florida. Following post doctoral work at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, he returned to join the UF College of Dentistry faculty in 1984. He was a nationally and internationally respected researcher in the field of mucosal immunity and taught immunology to dental and PhD students. He also served as a member of the campus IT committee.
He was a loving father and husband. His friends and family will miss his dry humor and quick wit. Tom was an avid Gator football and basketball fan. He enjoyed music, golf, and traveling.
Tom is survived by his wife of 41 years, Dr. Mary Brown of Gainesville; son, Dr. Thomas (Tom) Brown Jr (Taylor) of Jacksonville Beach, FL; siblings James (Jim) F. Brown (Livi) of Cincinnati, OH; Dr. Richard (Rick) S. Brown (Melinda) of Ormond Beach, FL; and Robert (Bob) F. Brown (Linda) of Cary, NC. He also leaves beloved nieces (Kathy Henry, Kristina Brown, Kelly Brown, and Shannon Brown) and nephews (Jim Brown III, Drew Byrd, Christopher Byrd, and Stephen Brown).
The family expresses gratitude to the University of Florida medical teams, and most especially Drs. Thom George and Roi Dagan, whose efforts granted us extraordinary time and quality of life to share with Tom. We are also grateful to the caring staff at Haven Hospice who provided a calm and caring environment.
In lieu of flowers, gifts made in memory of Dr. Tom Brown may be made to the UF Foundation or Haven Hospice. Tom and Mary Brown and I went to graduate school together in the Microbiology and Cell Science Department at UF. It was a time for hard work and exciting science, sprinkled with a heavy dose of fun and laughter!
