Jeffrey Young Obituary

Young, Jeffrey L.

Jeffrey Young went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, May 31. Jeff, also known as Ned, was born in Gainesville on July 21, 1957. He was baptized and confirmed as a Roman Catholic at St. Patrick's Church in Gainesville. He attended St. Patrick's School and Buchholz High School where he graduated in 1975. An avid sportsman and fan, Jeff played on the Buchholz High School golf and baseball teams. Jeff was beloved by his many friends and family. He was devoted to his three children, Summerlyn, Jessica and Jefferson Young, and his newborn granddaughter, Kaylyn Mae, born to Summerlyn on May 25, 2011. He is also survived by his parents, Robert L. and Mary J. Young of Gainesville, his childrens' half-siblings, Shelton and Alexis Hunter, five siblings, Mary K, James, John and David Young and Amy Young Grimes and by Stephanie Young, his former wife and the mother of his children. Jeff worked as a landscaper for many families in the Gainesville area. Jeff loved to play golf; he played every Sunday with his friends at Ocala Palms Golf and Country Club. He had an encyclopedic knowledge of sports facts and could call up a name or a statistic at a moment's notice, particularly if it involved the Gators.

A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, June 4, 2011 at the Baughman Center Chapel, located at the corner of Museum and Radio Roads on the University of Florida campus. In lieu of flowers, donations to benefit Jeff's children can be made to a trust account in the name of Mary J. Young at 1st Credit Union of Gainesville.

Ned was the most loyal of us all. He kept up with all of his friends from his entire life and made sure that we all knew where everyone else was and how they/we were getting along. He was everyone's personal facebook long before we'd ever heard of such a thing.
We have lost a true friend and brother.

What a shock, we will miss him daily! My prayers for the children, brothers & sisters, and to his parents. Ned was a special, special friend. Seems like we have known him for ever. What a heck of a fellow, good down to his toes, with a heart of gold. He will be sadly missed when we remember the good, the volatile, and the hysterical times. Love ya Jeff, miss you already...

Our loss of Ned is very difficult. Ned and I started our friendship at Saint Patrick’s, which he often mentioned. We spent time in the Boy Scouts, both Ned and I were high achievers in scouting, making it to Second Class in three years of scouting. There are so many memories and his loss is so overwhelming. We grew together and never forgot our friendship during and after BHS. Leaving Gainesville in the early 80’s, Ned and I never were apart. Talking often on my visits back home and over the phone, we always ended our conversation with saying “I love you.” We recently talked. Ned was always in my corner, as with anyone he knew.
A weekday Mass will be held in remembrance of him at Saint Helens Catholic Church in Georgetown, Texas in the near future. To the entire Young family, he was my friend, my brother and I will never forget his friendship and his love. Brillo.

Ned, you broke the mold. There will never be another, won't happen again. The Gators have lost their biggest fan ever. I still cherish our coaching camraderie together during our sons T-ball games, and even back to the birthing classes we attended together at the Birth Center when Jeff and Eric were born a week apart, in the same room. I love you brother, may you rest in peace. My condolences to all of the Young family.
