Harold Ernest Long Standing Bear Chief Gray obituary

Harold Gray Obituary

BROWNING - Harold Ernest Gray, Long Standing Bear Chief, 68, of Browning, a longtime teacher and advocate of Indian causes, died Saturday at a Browning hospital, of heart failure and complications from diabetes.
A wake is in progress at Glacier Wake Center in Browning, where a traditional Blackfeet prayer service is 2 p.m. Wednesday. Whitted Funeral Chapel of Cut Bank is in charge of arrangements.
Long Standing Bear Chief was born Nov. 9, 1941, in Browning, Mont., to Ernest and Josie (McKay) Gray. He attended Browning schools and graduated in 1960 from Browning High School. He went on to the University of Montana, where he received his bachelor's and master's degrees, and was an original founder of the Indian Students Association's Kyi Yo Club, which he named. He also attended the University of Minnesota, where he pursued a doctorate degree.
Harold spent many years as an educator. His professional career included work as a high school and college instructor, as the first director of Indian Studies at the University of Montana; director of the Chippewa Cree Tribal Research Program at Rocky Boy, Mont.; Head Start director, Browning, Mont.; and educator with the Bureau of Indian Affairs, Education Department in Lame Deer, Mont. As president of Bear Chief and Associates, a consulting firm he operated with his twin brother, he provided technical assistance to many tribes, tribal programs and schools throughout the U.S.
Long Standing Bear Chief spent a great deal of his career as a freelance author, historian and traditional artist. He was often sought after by people for information and knowledge regarding tribal history, traditions and laws regarding indigenous people, their governments and their rights.
Long Standing Bear Chief taught his children to be proud of their Indian ancestry as well as to celebrate their diverse ethnic backgrounds. He was an enrolled Blackfeet but also claimed Chippewa/Cree, Mohawk, French and Scottish ancestry. But above all else, he was a fighter for indigenous causes. In his last years he worked hard on the constitutional reform for the Blackfeet Nation, seeing it as an opportunity to leave a beautiful legacy for generations to come.
Long Standing Bear Chief is survived by his six children, Nicole Gray, Dr. Ernest Gray (Denise), Elizabeth Pepion (Mike), Margaret Boyer (Bob), Alex Gray and Celina Gray; his ex-wife Susan Brown Gray, his twin brother Gerald J. Gray Sr. (Joanne); brother Darryl M. Gray (JoAnn); his sister, Marilyn F. Gray; and nine grandchildren.

My family and I met Long Standing Bear Chief back when my oldest was about 5 and my youngest was about 3--17 years ago, now. Over about two hours, I learned from him that the Munroes have long been a part of Blackfoot history, and was encouraged by him to believe the stories of my family about our history. He was kind, patient, compassionate, gentle with my sons--listening to a dream of my 5-year-old, and kindly accepted a watercolor painting I had made for him as an expression of my gratitude for his time with us. I was very saddened to learn of his death, and realized that I could leave a memorial here. Thank you.

Long Standing Bear Chief was a close friend and mentor over the last 11 years since I met him. We had lots of coffee and good talks together about indigenous issues. He stayed with my family overnight on his way to Port Angeles about 3 months before he passed. I am so sorry to learn he is gone (I only found out today) and we have prayed for his spirit tonight. I will always feel honored to have known him. Ni kso ku wah, Pikuni bro.

Harold called me on Friday the day before he passed away and said, "Mr. Mayor, me and my group met and have decided to overtake your radio station. The music being played on there is very depressing and needs to be changed." I told him that the station is licensed to the Town and can't be easily transferred away, but I would be glad to discuss with he and his group doing a time block on it. I also let him know that we planned on adding classic rock along with the classic country pretty soon and he was very happy to hear that.

I was sure sorry to hear you had passed on the very next day. I'm sure glad I got to work with you for the past few years Long Standing Bear Chief. You were a real warrior!

To the family of Long Standing Bear Chief - He was a role model for all of us to stand up for what is right for all indigenous peoples. He exuded pride and love for all Native people. This was evident in his writings, his philosophy, and especially his passion for water rights for all members of the 1855 Treaty with the Blackfeet Nation. I am honoured to have been able to visit with him.

wrapped and ready to go!

My Uncle was a wonderful man and I am so blessed to have had him for 45 years in my life. I am so glad I got to spend these past 6 years with him after I moved to Mt. from Alaska. He taught me to be proud of who I am and wher I came from. For that i will always love and appreciate that. He is now with the Great Spirit in the sky soaring like an Eagle.

Our deepest sympathies go to the family of Long Standing Bear Chief. He will be dearly missed by all who knew him. Our family was blessed to have known him as a friend. When we heard him speak in San Francisco 10 years ago his view on the world had a huge influence on how we now view the world. We stayed with Long Standing Bear Chief for a few days this summer and his spirit is with us. Yesterday we burnt some dry sage as he showed us a few years ago when we became members of the Blue Butterfly society. We hope the smoke from Lake Tahoe helped him on his journey. Long Standing Bear Chief was a great advocate for the Blackfoot Nation and all indigenous peoples (even the Irish!). We miss you.

I was shocked to hear about Harold's passing. I feel honored to have been a part of that special group back in 1968 that re-started the Kyi-Yo club. We went on to lobby for an office on UM Campus; then we lobbied for the first Indian Studies program. Back then, there were a handful of Indian students. We brought 250 new students to campus after our first Indian Youth Conference in 1968. Harold was our first Director. He has always been a strong activist and I am proud to have been his friend. Harold, I know you will continue to do good things on the other side camp. Ah-ho!

I had the privilege to work with Harold Gray when he lived at Rocky Boy and credit him with the inspiration to always be an advocate for Indians no matter what I chose to do. I also knew his dad from his days as a boxing coach although I was quite young. The last time I saw him we had a cigarette outside the Sundance Arbor at Rocky Boy where he was fasting and thirsting. Very inpirational man.

I knew Harold as a kind and generous man, I also knew his Dad Ernest, Ernest helped me during my days as a boxer, he encouraged me and I'll never forget that. Harold was the same way, always encourgeing our young people to be curious and always strive to be true to themselves and there people. I'll miss him, see ya in the next world long stand bear chief,

"The Gray Boys"-I've always thought of you as a group when we were growing up. Losing Harold is a great loss; he was a unique individual & was instrumental in my opportunity to return to college, complete my B.S. Degree & gain much needed self-confidence. I truly appreciated him. So sorry for your loss.

I have only known and called him by the name he chose: Long Standing Bear Chief. I met him when he was doing Spirit Talk on KGPR. His voice called out to me so I came to meet him at the station. He and I shared many cups of coffee and talked of ideas for banning prejudice, racism, and religious intolerance, here and everywhere. I always introduced him as my mentor, but this last spring, he told me he was no longer my mentor, I was a co-teacher with him.
Long Standing Bear Chief was unafraid of what others thought of him for the ideas he lived by. He spoke from his heart and listened to the spirit of peace from anyone.
I will miss our visits and he will always be my mentor.
To his family: he loved you all, he often spoke with pride about every one of you.
Peace to all,
Mark Mathison

Harold was a Warrior for all Tribes which can be best documented by his work in advocating for and demanding from the State of Montana the Indian Student Fee Waiver. He gathered the forces of the U of M Kyi-yo Students who worked hard to make this student assistance a reality. Harold was instrumental in many advances for Indian people that have never been fully recognized in his lifetime. My deepest condolences to his children, his brothers & sister, Susan and all who loved him.
