Darlene Long Obituary

Darlene M. (Doherty) Long

Green Bay - Darlene M. Long, 91, Green Bay, passed away early Wednesday morning, Dec. 13, 2017 surrounded by her loving family. Darlene was born July 19,1926 in Plymouth to the late Lillian (Schulz) and Phillip Doherty.

She was raised in Green Bay where she attended St Mary of the Angels Grade School and East High School meeting people with whom she would remain lifelong friends. On June 14,1952, Darlene married Donald J. Long, Sr. and started the job of providing support and encouragement to his dream of building a successful business in the Green Bay community where they raised their four children. She and Don had a full life together, hosting many society events in their home, and supporting numerous charitable organizations all their lives. They also found time to visit and enjoy foreign locations throughout their journey.

To say Darlene was a devoted wife and a wonderful mother would be a disservice. Her life's goal and real happiness were found in making her family feel deeply loved every single day, that along with being a loyal friend, were her true callings. Her children were her life and she always put family first. Darlene was a very proud and doting grandmother and great-grandmother, (they could do no wrong) and a second mother to many of her children's friends. She touched many lives and was loved by all.

She will forever be remembered for her quick wit, kind nature, generous spirit and incredible sense of style. Darlene was a sweet, patient and thoughtful woman who enjoyed reading novels, visiting friends, telling a funny joke and talking with her children daily, reminding them right up until the end that she "is the boss". She looked forward to spending her winters in the warm sun of Marco Island, FL, but as a longtime resident of a Green Bay and De Pere, she also took great joy in dinners, lunches and nights out with friends and family in town.

Darlene is survived by her children and spouses; Cheri Long and Tom Dallman, Sue and Tom Olmsted, DJ and Julie Long, and Lori and Brad Hanus. Grandchildren include Corey (Melissa) Olmsted, Zach (Laura) Dallman, Josh (Pavlyna) Dallman, Mackenzie, Mason and Bennett Hanus; great-grandchildren, Taylor, Bailey, and Paige Olmsted, Emma Dallman and Vasyl Dallman, Maxwell and Madyson Thayse; and brothers and sisters-in-laws, Victor and Jayne Long, Geraldine Pirman, Colleen Turnquist, Maureen Vaessen, Harry Proctor; and many nieces and nephews.

Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, Don Doherty; and her sister Margie Chriske; sister-in-law, Fern Doherty; brother-in-law, Jack Chriske; brother-in law, Tom Long; sister-in-law, Nancy Proctor; brother-in-law, Frank Pirman; brother-in-law, Roger Vaessen; sister-in-law, Kathy Long; sister-in-law, Patricia Peterson; brother-in-law, Howard Peterson; and sister-in-law, Tae Long.

Friends may call at Resurrection Catholic Church, 333 Hilltop Dr., from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday. A Parish Wake Service will be held at 6:30 p.m. Friends may also call from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the church, followed by the Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m. with Bishop Robert Morneau and concelebrated with Very Rev. A memorial fund has been established in Darlene's name with gifts going to Paul's Pantry and St. Patrick's Parish Food Pantry.

A heartfelt thanks to Mom's Florida care team; Stael, Maria, and Wanda, as well as her Green Bay care team; Kay, Vickie, Tracy, and Jane; your care and love was invaluable and Darlene talked about you all in her final days.

And Betty, thank you for your friendship and inclusion of Darlene in your life's adventures.

I'm very sorry to hear of Darlene's passing and hope her last days were filled with the knowledge of what a wonderful wife, mom, grandmother and person she was. Her and Don were always thought of very highly by me especially when I worked at the Catholic Foundation. I would see her cheering her grandson on the football field when I was there to cheer on mine. Time goes so fast.
May your days of mourning pass quickly and be replaced with the smiles, laughter and love she brought you, that filled your life, and the many lives she touched, because she lived an extraordinary life herself.
God bless you all,
Jan Compton

Darlene will be missed so much. Although we didn't get to see each other often, whenever we did, she was always kind, funny and welcoming. Her obituary was a lovely tribute to the person she was. My thoughts are with you all.
