To the Garibaldi Family - I only recently learned of Dr. G's passing and am deeply saddened. I was a resident at UConn from 1989-92, and he truly helped me find my direction and sense of self-worth. I am eternally grateful for his kindness and leadership. I am so sorry for your loss. He is missed by many.

Dear Garibaldi family,
I just learned the news of Dr. Garibaldi's passing.
I was a resident in Internal Medicine at UConn from 1985-88. I remember Dr. Garibaldi as an extremely kind and decent man. There are very few full professors or department chairs who had a door as open, even for the greenest interns or most over-stressed residents, as Dick Garibaldi did. He was a mentor to me. Despite his impressive accomplishments, he was remarkably humble and approachable. He was an outstanding role model for young physicians in training. He exemplified the kind of doctor and person one should strive to become.
I am grateful that I knew him. I will never forget him.

Dearest Lorraine:
I was sure that we would see you, Dick, and the children in Conn. some day. It was looking like this year might be the year. My search for him on the internet a few minutes agoled to the saddest news I have had since my Mother died 6 years ago. Words fail me. He remained such a friend even though we spoke only once or twice since we visited with you in Salt Lake. We are so filled with memories of shared time and fun in the youth of our lives. Who can forget Richard Matthew causing the car to advance in the park where we had lunch or the time in Atlanta that he climbed into the oven.
Please accept Louise and my condolences. Our prayers and love are with you, the children and grandchildren.
May Jesus give your mind his peace and your heart his love.
We will try to get your telephone number and speak with you personally. If that proves difficult please feel free to call. We would really like to speak with you.
With love and appreciation for your friendship,

Dear Mrs. Garibaldi and family,
I just learned of Dr. Garibaldi's death, and I am so sorry for all of you. Please accept my condolences and sweet memories from my residency years at UConn Health Center (1982-86, though it was in my last year as chief resident that we spent the most time together) sitting in his office in the afternoons reviewing cases and housestaff and life in general (usually mine), though I did hear about what "the kids" were up to, and thought them lucky to have such a great Dad. Laughing and encouraging, curious and kind, listening and freely sharing his time, wisdom and knowledge, he shaped my life both as a teacher and as a doctor, as an internist and certainly as an infectious dieases specialist. I so looked forward to seeing him at the national meetings, and will miss him too. He changed the world for the better, fostering generations of doctors who carry his memory forward to their patients. Thanks, Dr. G.

To the Garibaldi family,
My brother brought the news of Richard's passing to our Thanksgiving table yesterday. I was stunned and saddened though I have not seen him since he was a teenager. My back yard was adjacent to his, so we played "catch" until I could no longer keep up with the strength of his arm. I was two years older than Richard and could see that he was a wonderful human being. When I entered the convent I knew that his life would be a blessing for others. I have read his obituary and the guest comments and feel so proud of who he became and happy to know he had a loving family.
Since my mental picture of him was of a teenage boy, I was surprised to see that he aged into being a photo twin of his own father - another kind, gentle and compassionate man.
May your faith and Richard's love continue to bless you.

Dear Mrs. Garibaldi
Please accept my heartfelt condoleances. I worked with Dr. G. from 1983-1993 and he has been a great mentor and friend to me and so many other junior faculty. He was the best listener I've ever met. He was a generous and empathic leader so rare in the rough annd tumble of the academia.
May God rest his soul and may he be remembered with love by the hundreds he touched with his kindness!

Dear Lorraine,
I was just reading the APIC web page when I heard the news of Dick's passing. Our prayers and thoughts are with you . Although I hadn't seen Dick in many years I have always been proud to be able to call him a friend and a colleague. He was always a fresh voice of reason and compassion and his sense of humor was second to none. His passing is a tremendous loss to all . I particularly remember the Editorial Board meetings and the fun "Walks" that DIck took us on. You and your family are in our prayers.

The gentle tap of Dr G’s hand on my back after listening to my lungs followed by one soft, reassuring single word, “excellent”, will be with me forever. The good (great) doctor gave Sharon and me the care, comfort and hope to stay healthy. Arguing over the Red Sox/Yankees usually took precedence over reviewing lab results. And his counsel on family and life’s joys and troubles was always given before we said good bye until next time.
On August 2nd, I rode my bicycle 54 miles in the Tour of Litchfield Hills cancer charity. I taped a small Italian flag to my handlebars with Richard A. Garibaldi, MD written on the edge. Before I started, I listened to my favorite musical artist, Mark Knopfler sing “Stand Up Guy”. The final lines stayed in my head throughout the ride: “these days of miracles don’t come falling from the sky/raise your glasses to the doctor/to a stand up guy/to the doctor/a stand up guy.” We will miss you dearly, Dr. G.

To The Garibaldi Family,
I was deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Dr. Garibaldi. It was my honor to have know Dr. G during the many years I worked at UConn Health Center. UConn has lost one of its most highly loved, respected and distinguished faculty members. Dr. G also touched my life in a personal way in the early '90's when my husband was
critically ill on the ICU. Dr. G was called in to consult on the case. His outstanding mind and intellect were matched with true compassion and caring. He was a wonderful physician. Dr. G will never be forgotten.

UCONN and the Medical world have lost a remarkable person. Dr. G took care of my father in the 80's, and when he passed in 84, he would still keep in touch with my mother. She volunteered at the front desk at UCONN till her late 80's and every now and then she would tell me, Dr.G stopped by today. If he didn't see her there, he stopped at her house. Imagine, a doctor making a house call, just caring. My deepest sympathies to the family. It's nice to read the family is continuing tradition.

I want to convey my heartfelt sympathy for your great loss. Dear Lorraine and family,
Paul and were so sorry to hear of Dick's passing. Our heartfelt sympathy goes out to you Lorraine and your children Karen, Christine, Susanne and Richard. He was a wonderful loving husband, a great dad and a great friend. He will forever be missed.
A wonderful gift was given to all of who knew Dick and your family. Our wonderful memories of all the Garibaldi family comes from Cape Cod beach days, and short summer vacations with the Landrigan family. Every year we could look forward to seeing and being part of the combined families (Garibadli, Landrigan/Magee) and what a wonderful combination that was!
We are living in Florida and unable to come to show our love and support to all the Garibaldi family during this very sad time, but please know that we will keep Dick and all of you in our thoughts and daily prayers.

LORRAINE AND FAMILY,I HAVE SUCH WONDERFUL MEMORIES OF DR G. WITHOUT HIS CARING,WISDOM AND ABILITY TO SEE THE BEST IN EVERYONE I DOUBT MY HUSBAND BILL WOULD HAVE LIVED NEARLY AS LONG AS HE DID.HE WAS WILLING TO TALK TO HIM AT GREAT LENGTH WHEN HE WAS TIRED AND IT WAS LATE IN THE AFTERNOON.HE WENT ABOVE AND BEYOND FOR EVERYONE HE KNEW.I HAVE TO SAY HIS GENTLENESS AND TRUE CARING HELPED ME TO MAKE DIFFICULT MEDICAL DECISIONS WHICH CHANGED MY LIFE.
I RECENTLY MET DR KAREN GARIBALDI AND SHE HAS THE SAME COMPASSION AS HER FATHER DID.
I AM SO SORRY FOR YOUR LOSS AND CAN ONLY IMAGINE HOW MUCH YOU MISS HIM. HE IS AT PEACE IN GOD'S ARM'S AND YOU ARE IN MY PRAYERS.

Dear Mrs. Garibaldi, Susanne, Christine, Karen and Richard - When I read the news about Dr. G I felt like I had been hit in the gut. What a horrible loss! 15 years ago he gave me my very first job at UCHC assisting with the Internal Medicine Residency Program. True to his form, he taught me about life, about working with all types of people, never making me feel inadeqate instead making me feel like an integral part his the team. I will never forget him.

Dear Garibaldi Family:
Since 1976, Dick has been progressively a mentor, a colleague, and a friend to me. He taught me many facts and skills in infectious disease. Even more importantly however, he was the rare academician who exemplified and modeled the kind of caring and compassionate physician I am still striving to be. His life was and his memory will be an inspiration to me and countless others who had the privilege to know and work with him.
I wish you strength for now and the comfort that only time can bring for the loss of such a wonderful man.

Dr. G mentored me as a resident and then young faculty member at the University of Utah Medical Center. He authored a wonderful chapter in my textbook of general medicine. He advised me wisely on many occasions over the years. I looked forward to seeing him at national meetings. He was not only a great doctor and teacher and academician, he was the greatest of guys. He is not replaceable. Thanks to his family for allowing him to spend some time with the rest of us to our enduring advantage.

Dear Karen and family,
Dick Garibaldi was a rare physician who achieved it all. He was an outstanding clinician, and leader in the specialty of Infectious Diseases . He was an educator and friend to many colleagues and students. A truly Renaissance man who always had a smile and unending optimism. He was an inspiration to all who worked with him!

My sincere sympathies to the the entire Garibaldi family.
As a UCHC pharmacist and adminstrator I knew Dr. G for many years and had the wonderful opportunity to discuss with him both clinical and administrative issues. I never knew such an accomplished man who was also so approachable, warm and kind. It was obvious that he always valued the feelings of others.
UCHC, the greater Hartford community and all the people he touched were better off because he lived. He will be missed.

Dear Garibaldi Family,
On this the 1st anniversary of my husband's passing from colon cancer, I can do more than sympathize. I feel your pain deeply.
I was fortunate to have worked with Dr. G for a number of years through the UCONN Internal Medicine Program's affiliation with Saint Francis Hospital. At one point, I even worked for Dr. G at UConn for a few weeks at his request. He was the sweetest man you can ever meet.
We share many friendships, such as Pam Kisluk who he has never stopped visiting, or being in touch in some way over the more than 12 years after her two strokes. When I visit, she proudly tells me that he has been by, or sent her a Christmas, birthday, or such card.
I know God will have a grand welcome for him, for the good that we do on this earth we receive multi-fold on judgment day; and the good that Dr. G has done on this earth, the people he touched not only with his knowledge but with his good heart is immeasurable.
Much love and wishes for strength to the family. May knowing that the seeds that Dr. G planted will help so many lives not only today, but for many generations to come.

Karen,
My heart is broken - for you, your mom, and all of your loved ones. Although I never had the opportunity to meet them, I've felt a deep connection to both your dad and mom. The fight was a valiant one for all of you. Now your dad's struggle is over and he is at peace. In the still of the difficult nights, listen closely and you will hear the angels singing to welcome him and comfort you.
Love,

The medical community of Greater Hartford has lost a dedicated physician, wonderful mentor and above all a great human being. He was a humble soul despite his breadth of knowledge and experience. I work with Dr. G for a few years and he was always so nice and sweet. He had the biggest heart. He was always there to lend a helping hand. He cared so much about his patients. He was the type of person that went above and beyond the call of duty. I saw him recently and I was able to share pictures with him of my 7 month daughter. The smile on his face was priceless. He was so happy for me. He will be very missed by everyone.

Dr. G. was probably the nicest person I have ever known, I am so beyond sad that he had this illness and has passed. Every time we would see each other we would talk about our Labrador Retrievers and Fly Fishing. It was amazing to me that someone of his stature, accomplishments and responsibilities that he would take so much time to sit around and just chat about the things we cared about in life as I am sure his schedule was overwhelming. He treated everyone equally, and cared so much for people and for life. I can not express in words how much Dr. G. meant to me as a friend.
This world is a lesser place without Dr. G. …..Heaven however has just become an even better place with him in it.
I will miss you so much, and think of you every time I throw a line.
My deepest sympathies go out to Dr. G.’s family.

Dr. Garibaldi was a true gem. I will miss our Thursday afternoon chats, which consisted of a variety of topics related to both health (I learned much from him about the present condition of primary care. We had many lively discussions about its future), and family. It was evident to me that he was a loving, caring and proud husband, father and grandfather. To his family, I extend my deepest sympathies. Sincerely, Lynn Townshend, CT DPH
