William Pomponi Obituary

William "Bill" Lawrence Pomponi, II, 67, of North Granby, passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, May 24, 2016, at his home. Born in Bronxville, NY on July 21, 1948, son of the late William Lawrence and Agnes Frances (Johnson) Pomponi, he was raised in Brewster, NY and attended Brewster Public Schools. After high school, Bill continued his education at Norwich University and graduated with a Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering in 1970. Bill started his career as an engineer at Combustion Engineering in Windsor and shortly after enlisted in the U.S. Army. He served during the Vietnam War and was honorably discharged as a First Lieutenant in 1976. Bill returned to Connecticut and continued working at Combustion Engineering, which later became ABB and then Alstom Power. He retired in 2006, as a Vice President of International Sales after 36 years of service. Since high school, Bill was a car enthusiast. He participated in drag racing throughout the Northeast for many years and was a member of the NHRA and All Star Racing Association. Bill took a lot of pride in his classic cars and passed his passion for racing on to his son Bill. He also enjoyed playing golf and played in a men's league at Airways Golf Course in West Suffield for many years. In his spare time, Bill loved spending time with his family and working on his model train set. A proud veteran, Bill was a longtime member of Shannon-Shattuck Post #182 in Granby. He leaves a son, William Lawrence Pomponi, III and his wife Sara of West Granby; a daughter, Jennifer Pomponi and her husband Chad Francis of Milford; four grandchildren, Jack and Sean Pomponi and George and Evan Francis; and the mother of his children, his former wife, Janice Pomponi of Granby. His family will receive friends on Tuesday, May 31, 12 Noon to 2 p.m., followed by a memorial service at 2 p.m., at the Hayes-Huling & Carmon Funeral Home, 364 Salmon Brook St., Granby. Burial with Military Honors will follow in Granby Cemetery, Granby. The family has requested that memorial contributions be made to Shannon-Shattuck Post #182, American Legion, 244 North Granby Rd., Granby, CT 06035. Remembering Pomps: Bill and I were Rooks together in "F Troop", top floor of Goodyear Hall, (Freshman year) @ Norwich. We were both Engineering majors. At the end of rook year, he was one of the bright 30% selected to continue on as an engineer. I had to go looking for another major, if I was going to stay @ Norwich! :o)
What I remember most about Bill was how disciplined he was, as a student who worked very hard and as a cadet. His shoes always the shiniest, his uniform always crisply pressed and he could always be described as a "Sharp Cadet"! In those days, he was actually kind of shy!
But he always had a great big laugh & was full of fun!
I saw Bill @ our 30th Reunion & we gave each other a hug and spoke briefly. Bill was no longer shy, but larger than life! It was fun to hear how his love of cars had continued on in a big way.
I was so sad to learn of Bill's passing. He was truly one of the greats of the Class of 1970.
RIP Pomps.

I knew Bill as an engineer student at Norwich. I mostly hung out with engineer students and saw Bill frequently to and from class. I was a year ahead of Bill and clearly remember him as always in a good mood. I am so very sorry to hear of his passing. So many years early. Best regards.

To Jan, Jenn, Bill, and all who loved and cared about Pomps: We are so very saddened by Pomps passing. We missed him at reunion which is always a special time at Norwich. Jan, remember when he tried to convince Diane that pizza was good for Poppy back in '78? Norwich friendships are among the very best. Blessings to you all, Diane & Bob '70

We are very sorry for your loss and our loss. Bill was always fun to talk to at the track and a good competitor. As a former GE employee he would always ask me about GE stock, which he and I both owned, hoping I had insider good news which I never had. He will be missed.
