I grew up as kid, living next to him, outstanding man, very educated and nice person. I used to cut his grass when he lived in Fort Mitchell, KY. Sorry to see him pass, my condolences.

"Life is a banquet...", indeed! David will be truly missed, which for me, means I will think of him often - one of the true 'gentlemen of the press'! May I offer my condolences to his family and especially to Laura.

RIP my dear friend. I have great memories from dinner on your condo patio in Cincinnati and the times together in newsrooms, meetings and dinners. You were a great mentor and role model. I am honored to call you friend!

I first met David in 1989 when he contacted winners of the Edward Meeman Award in conservation writing and asked if journalists had an interest in starting an association of environmental journalists. I called him up at his offices at Scripps Howard and said I enthusiastically supported his idea. I was a science and environmental reporter at the Philadelphia Inquirer and I also believed there was a need for such a group. After that initial phone call we had many additional phone calls as the strategy for creating such an organization developed. David played a critical role in nurturing the formation of a group that became known as the Society of Environmental Journalists (SEJ).
