John Cadley Obituary

CADLEY, John Lambert John Lambert Cadley died peacefully (February 1, 2006), from complications of a stroke. He was born January 5, 1917, and lived in Milford for over 60 years. Educated at Williston Academy and the Pratt Institute in New York, he went on to become vice-president and manager of Air Lock Incorporated in Milford. There he designed and engineered disconnect fittings used in the Mercury, Gemini, and Apollo space programs. One of his designs is still in use today as the common seat belt release. Mr. Cadley was a life long yachtsman and a member of the Windjammers Sailing Club and the Connecticut Marine Trade Association. In the early 70s, he joined the Milford Boat Works as a yacht broker. Throughout his life he was an active civic leader serving on various boards and commissions including the Milford Animal Shelter, the Milford Land Conservation Trust and the United Way where he was a past president. Mr. Cadley was a member of the RTM prior to Milford being organized as a city. Mr Cadley joined the Milford Rotary Club in 1953 where he immediately became active, serving for several years as Chat Editor. He was instrumental in making the club the most prolific in the district in donations to the Rotary International Foundation. With his long resume of community contributions, Mr. Cadley was distinguished as a Paul Harris fellow and served as president in 1960. John believed in Rotary - "Service Above Self." Mr. Cadley is survived by his children, daughter, Terry Schreiber and husband, Rick Schreiber of Chester; daughter, Elizabeth Cadley and husband, Michael Branden of Milford; son, Christopher Cadley of Fort Lauderdale, FL; daughter, Kimara Cadley Rivera and husband, Orlando of West Haven; as well as eight grandchildren; and two great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Elizabeth and son, Stephen John Cadley. A memorial service will be held on Sunday, February 5, at 12 Noon, at Smith Funeral Home. The family requests that memorial contributions be made to their father's beloved Milford Rotary Club, P.O. Box 381, Milford, CT. 06460.

I had a horse that boarded at the Cadley's and had the pleasure of meeting both of them. In later years I worked with John at the Milford Boat Works. He and his wife were very special people.

It has been a privilege to have know them both.

I spent 20 years racing sailboats with son Steve on Anneliese. I've had the pleasure of having dinner at the Cadley house several times - while Mrs. Cadley was still alive - thanks for the memories. I am also a 21 year employee of Air-Lock (Contracts Manager) and am well aware of his contributions to this company.

He will be missed.
