Calvin Hughes Obituary

Calvin T. Hughes, Jr., M.D., 88, of West Hartford died at his home on January 26, 2015. Dr. Hughes was a retired ophthalmologist who practiced in Hartford. He grew up in Southington and was a graduate of Loomis School. He served with the U.S. Navy prior to graduating Yale University, Class of 1950, and Harvard University Medical School. He served internships at Mount Auburn Hospital in Cambridge, MA, and John Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore. He went to study Ophthalmology at Washington University in Saint Louis, MO, prior to setting up practice in Hartford. He was a world traveler, visiting all seven continents and did a term of service on the international, charitable hospital ship, HOPE, while being an innovator of cornea transplant surgery in Hartford, where he was a prominent ophthalmologist for decades. Cal was a world-class skier, skiing the Swiss and Austrian Alps as well as in Colorado and Utah. He was an avid sailor, sailing his 40' Swedish-built sloop out of Niantic. He also excelled as a classical pianist and was devoted to all animals, especially birds. He is survived by cousins, Lucia Doud Wallace of Willsboro, NY, Dr. Cynthia Day Wallace of Willsboro, NY and Geneva, Switzerland; Margaret Ellis Wood of Philadelphia, PA, John Arden Ellis of Martha's Vineyard, MA and Calvin Gogerty of Idyllwild, CA; and several close friends. Services and burial in the family plot will be private. Memorial gifts may be made to the United States Foundation of the University of the Valley of Guatemala, P.O. Box 30, Princeton, NJ 08542, of which Dr. Hughes was a benefactor because of his interest in the Mayan people. Taylor & Modeen Funeral Home, West Hartford has care of arrangements.

Calvin was my godfather and a wonderful family friend. We are all saddened by his passing, but I will remember many fantastic memories of our times spent with Calvin. Skiing, boating, Christmas Eves, times at the shore, or just visits for a cookout or dinner; all great times spent with Calvin. And he always kept us laughing. Calvin will be missed. God bless him.

My condolences to the family. I just learned of Calvin's passing away. He was a tax client of mine for a long time. He was one of the most interesting and colorful personalities I ever met. I always enjoyed meeting with him and hearing his stories. I especially loved hearing about all his exotic travel to such interesting places. Rest in peace Calvin.

My Condolences to the family, Calvin was a client of ours at Computer Resources and he would stop in to say hello every time he was in the area. He was a very nice and attentive person and had a very good sense of humor when he would visit. He also knew my Uncle, Sam Title when they were going to Loomis and would ask about him when came in for his visits.

Calvin came to me while I was in cosmetology school for his pedicures and followed me into my career at Gugliotti's salon and spa. He loved coming into see Martin and Leo Gugliotti. He loved seeing all the girls and we loved seeing calvin drive into the parking lot for his appointments. He would always crack jokes :) He will be greatly missed. My thoughts and prayers our with his family.

My condolences to the family. I was a patient when I was a child. I'm sure he's the reason I got glasses around 5th grade but it helped me see what I had been missing. He was a unique man and reading about him here, I learned even more. May you all have fond memories. Peace be with you.
