I am so sorry to learn of Richard's death. I only met Maureen and his son and daughter once, on a trip through North Dakota one summer a long time ago. (I taught at UND in Grand Forks). Richard and I had served as Operating Room technicians in the US Army, Fort Campbell, KY for more than a year together and he was without doubt my best friend there. We kept in touch after that, though our paths diverged. That GF visit, I remember vividly, was part of a trip to show his daughter Laura Engles Wilder country and the whole family stayed with us overnight (I think).
If any family reads this at this late date, I would like you to know how important your father was to me for encouraging me to go to college after my time in the Army. He actually got me to do that at Fort Campbell, night classes at Austin Peay State College. For Richard, it was to keep his spirit alive in a pretty desolate place (he already had his Yale degree); for me, it was the beginning of college again after my time in an unaccredited Catholic seminary. He DEFINITELY inspired me and gave me the courage to do that.
I'm not even sure he knew how important his example and encouragement were for me then; I may not have either, but I sure do now. Rest in Peace Richard, my old friend.

We will all miss Richard, such a gentle man. He so enjoyed extended family gatherings, the shores of St. Croix Cottages, his beloved books, and special time with his children and grandchildren. Our love and sympathy are with his wife and children. All of the family shares their loss and sadness.
