T. Reeves Obituary

Dr. T. Glen Reeves

Starkville

Dr. T. Glen Reeves, 72, of Starkville, died on Sunday, December 23, 2012, at Oktibbeha County Hospital. Welch Funeral Home, Starkville, arranged for cremation of his body. A memorial service will be announced and held at a later date.

Glen was born August 11, 1940, in Wellington, TX, and grew up in the Shinnery Community near the Texas-Oklahoma state line. His parents, William Coker Reeves and Pearl Bulls Reeves, owned and operated a gas station and general merchandise store 12 miles east of Wellington. He graduated from Wellington High School in 1958, having served as president of his senior class and of the Student Council. Glen earned bachelor's and master's degrees at West Texas State University in Canyon and a doctorate at East Texas State University in Commerce. Glen was the first doctoral student at ETSU to receive the Truax Scholar Award, given annually to an outstanding doctoral student in Counseling. While pursuing his doctorate, Glen served as Director of Student Financial Aid.

Glen began his teaching career in 1968 at Mississippi State University as Assistant Professor of Counseling and taught there for 30 years, retiring as Professor Emeritus and Clinical Director of the Counseling and School Psychology Laboratory. He was a Licensed Professional Counselor and was appointed by the Governor to the Mississippi Licensure Board for Professional Counselors, serving a three-year term as Chair.

Former students attest to the profound impact Glen had on their personal and professional lives, and many became lifelong friends who loved, admired, and respected him. He was a master at teaching people to communicate in positive ways and to examine their own feelings. Glen was known as fun-loving and a great storyteller with a gentle spirit and kind words for all. He was a modern-day Renaissance man, able to counsel persons in distress, fix a tractor, licensed to drive an 18-wheeler, tend a garden, and engage in scholarly discourse. He loved the challenge of a difficult crossword puzzle, reading nonfiction, and learning something new.

Glen was preceded in death by his parents, Bill and Pearl Reeves; his son, Harold Lynn Reeves; and two brothers-in-law, Bob McAlister and Dr. Ed Dempsey.

Glen is survived by his wife, Gloria Howell Reeves of Starkville; daughter, Rhea Ann Reeves Pace of Starkville; grandchildren, Michael Pace of Hattiesburg and Chelsea Pace of Starkville; former wife and mother of his children, Carolyn (Richard) Reeves Kazelskis of Hattiesburg; sisters, Gay McAlister of Wellington & Jerry Dempsey of Odessa; brother-in-law, William (Mary Golde) Howell of Jackson, MS; nephew, Billy (Darlene) McAlister; nieces, Patti McAlister (Ken) Williams, Shelley Dempsey Rash, Susan Dempsey (Jay) Hendrix, Melanie Howell Leonard, & Shelley Howell Crunk; and four cousins, Cammie & James Welch, Monte Hulse, Calvin & Elizabeth Burgess and Nancy Burgess.
