MATTOON - Lora Lee Hunt, 52, Mattoon, homemaker, died Saturday (June 11, 2011). Graveside services: 10 a.m. Wednesday, Oak Grove Cemetery, Oakland. No visitation. Holland NEWTON - Mrs. Ruth Elizabeth Holland, age 95 of Newton, IL passed away at 8:22 AM Saturday, June 11, 2011 at The Haven of Our Lady of Peace in Pensacola, Florida. Funeral services celebrating Ruth's life will be held at 10:00 AM Wednesday, June 15, 2011at the Blake-Buchanan Funeral Home in Newton, IL with Rev. Stephen Willis officiating. Entombment will be in the family mausoleum at the Honey Cemetery in Bogota, IL. Visitation will be held 5:00-7:00 PM Tuesday, June 14, 2011 at the funeral home with Eastern Star rites at 7:00 PM. In loving memory of Ruth, memorials may be made to the Activity Department at The Haven of Our Lady of Peace, 1900 Summit Blvd, Pensacola, Florida 32503. Ruth daily enjoyed many of the activities offered by the staff. Ruth was born on October 19, 1915 in Effingham County, Illinois the daughter of Benjamin and Mabel (Nave) Mahon. She married Darrel Eugene Holland on June 26, 1954 and he preceded her in death on November 18, 2006. Ruth was employed at Bauer Funeral Home in Effingham, Illinois from 1930 to 1954. In 1969, the family moved to Newton, Illinois where they operated the Buchanan Funeral Home until their retirement in 1985. While living in Newton, Ruth was involved in many activities involving her church and the community. Ruth and Darrel were instrumental in renumbering the homes in Newton in order to aid emergency personnel in locating an address with Ruth personally canvassing every home in Newton. Together they started the display of the veteran's flags that are seen around the court house on Memorial and Veterans Day. Ruth hand lettered all of the flags for many years. She enjoyed gardening and quilting and had won several ribbons for her beautiful quilts. In 2004, they moved to Pensacola, Florida to live with their daughter and son-in-law. Ruth was a member of the Grace United Methodist Church in Newton; Order of the Eastern Star Chapter #497 and Jasper Post #20 American Legion Ladies Auxiliary. Ruth is survived by a son, Jon (Donna Hauch) of Benton Harbor, Michigan; daughter, Heidi (Stephen) Lipe of Pensacola, Florida; stepson Dennis Holland of Ft Meyers, Florida; sister Naomi Spragg of Mason, Michigan; step grandchildren, Chantal (Jeffrey) Curtiss of Chicago, Illinois; Jarrod Lipe of Pensacola, Florida; Jesse (Maria) Holland, currently stationed with the U.S. Army in Afghanistan; Aaron Holland of Minneapolis, Minnesota; and Darla Holland of Nebraska; step great-grandchildren Alexis Curtiss, Vincent Holland, Jamie Holland, Josephyn Klosterbeur, Ellynor Klosterbeur and Jamesyn Klosterbeur. Ruth was preceded in death by her parents; stepmother, Cora Mahon; her husband of 52 years, Darrel; daughter, Reta Ruth Holland; and a step son, David Holland. Obituary written by family members.
