Howard Silverstein Obituary

SILVERSTEIN HOWARD, 71, prominent Miami attorney and businessman passed away Wednesday, February 19th, after a valiant bout with cancer. He was known for his gentlemanly manor, steel-trap intellect, and wonderful sense of humor. Born in Orlando, Florida on July 1, 1931 Howard was a graduate of the University of Miami School of Law. He practiced law for many years, but ultimately had a passion for business and for 30 years headed Alec's Camper Center, Inc. in South Dade. Howard's great grandparents settled in Miami in the 1800's. Howard is survived by his wife of 40 years, Norine; two daughters: Marla (Jim), and Lauren, three sons, Ryan (Jeanine), Stephen (Crystal), and Austin; his sister, Esther; and brother in law, Dr. Nathan Beckman. Also by his niece, Lois Silvers (Jim); nephew, Frank Beckman (Maxine); 10 grandchildren and five great grandchildren. This lovely man was loved and will be sorely missed by all who knew him. He will be remembered by his kind and generous nature. "The good man brings good things out of the good stored up in his heart." Luke 6:45. Donations to the American Cancer Society are requested in lieu of flowers. Visitation at Woodlawn South, 11655 SW 117 Avenue, Friday evening. Memorial service Saturday, Feb. 22, 11 a.m. at Wayside Baptist Church, 7701 S W 98 Street. To visit this Guest Book Online, go to www.herald.com/obituaries.

Norine, I don't know if you remember me, but I worked for Howard for many years beginning in 1962 when I was in high school. My friend Reggie Weissler sent me the notice about Howard's death. I am so very sorry. Howard played a very influential role in my life. I'm still working in the legal field 40 years later.

Dear Norine, Ryan, Lauren, Stephen, Austin and the entire Silverstein family;

It was with great shock and grief that I learned yesterday of Howard's passing. Unfortunately my family was out of town for the weekend and I was unaware of the service. Consequently, I regret I could not be there to personally offer my respects to your father's memory and my condolences to all of you. After first meeting Ryan as a class mate at Pinewood Acres, I will never forget the wonderful times I spent with your whole family, from the weekend sleep overs to the trips in the RV to Homassasa Springs. Howard would take Ryan, Stephen and me to Al's newstand late at night for Charleston Chew candy bars, Slim Jims and the latest comics and military modeling magazines. Then, because you had a great two story house, we'd spend the night seeing who could jump from the top of the second story landing to the bottom of the stairs. Howard knew what we were doing, but he let us get away with it.

I'm sorry we sort of drifted apart after Ryan and I went to different high schools. I'm glad, however, to have seen Howard one last time a while back, and was also happy to learn that Stephen and Austin carry on at Alec's. I will miss Howard dearly.

With great love and respect,

Mike, Loni, Amanda, Chris and the entire Perse family.

Norine, Ryan, Marla, Lauren, Stephen, Austin, and the entire Silverstein Family,

My sincerest condolences. Howard was a second father to me when I was growing up. Your family took in my family as their own, and I will always cherish every moment that we spent together. Howard was always fun, kind, gentle, and loving to everyone he met. Howard and Norine always included our family on their fun trips and gatherings. Fun filled memories that will never be forgotten. I will be with you in prayer on this very sad day.

All my love to everyone,

Rita (the little one)

Dear Norine and Silverstein family, we send our most sincere sympathy to you all. Although we only met Howard on a few occassions, we knew Howard to be a wonderful, warm and kind person especially through our family, Ramon & Rita Munoz. So many kind and humorous stories have been shared with us over the many years that they have known each other. He will be missed by all. May all your fond memories always keep his memory close to your hearts-- always.

Thinking of you.

With our deepest sympathy,

John and Miriam
