I've never known anyone who could relate so easily and so well to so many different kinds of people in a friendly way the way Steve did. The most radically diverse collection of people, from ditch-diggers to Ph.D.s, from bums to billionaires, all simply adored Steve Horwitz. To go anywhere with him was to be showered with the good will that people felt for him.

I am saddened to learn of Steve's death. He has been my doctor for over 25 years and is one of the few doctors I felt close enough to call by his first name. Even though I live in Coral Gables I drove over an hour so he could be my doctor. I looked forward to my visits because not only was he a great doctor, we spent time discussing books we have each read and thought the other would like to read.I am sure his family misses him deeply. I remember when I was younger and growing up with Andrea, Steve's wisdom, fun spirit, sleeping over at his and Melissa's house and just having fun! I wish I were down there to hug the family! Even though I only knew Dr. Horwitz as a patient he surely will be missed by myself and I am sure all of his patients as well. I started going to his office at a young age and he always took great care of me and always took time to not just do his job, but to just discuss everything going on with me and my family.
He was a great doctor and great man, he will be missed.

To Steve's family ... Steve and I did our premed together in the 60's at the old UM .. I can still hear him sing " hey there Georgy girl" when we were in chemistry class together .. We eventually blew a hole in the old wooden buildings in front of the now Biltmore hotel in a chemistry ' experiment.!
Over the years we would run into each other , I would send him my patients .. They all loved him !! My practice being Internal Med like his Dad who was a close friend of mine .. They were always calling him or me for the same patient ( mine being Michael Horowitz, MD)
Steve fought the big fight like some of us have had to do ... He was a beautiful person and doctor. I will miss him. My heartfelt thoughts to his family. ...

I met Steve when I was 11 years old. He was a brand new dermatologist and I was one of his first fair-skinned redheaded patients. I remember telling my mom that he was the nicest and funniest doctor I had ever met. He set me on a course of a daily sunscreen routine and made me aware of how important it is to care for my skin. But more than that, he remained my doctor for over 35 years and through crazy Miami Beach fate I was also lucky enough to be a part of one (at least) of his many circles of friends. Steve knew everyone and everyone he knew loved him. There are so few people like him in this world. No one else I know has that special "Dr. Steve" combination of character, love, kindness, sense of adventure and just plain "mench-ness." I will miss him, as will we all. Melissa, I adore you and I wish you comfort at this difficult time.

We received the very sad news of Steve's passing Friday evening and shed a few tears on losing such a great friend. Memories we are left with of great times spent with Steve sailing Force 5's at the Miami Yacht Club and also all the fantastic times aboard " Starlight Express." The races from Ft. Lauderdale to Key West were some of the most memorable and those memories will be cherished by those who sailed with Steve. He always provided the best stories and jokes to entertain the crew. Steve and I did our dermatology residency together in the late 1970's. While close back then, we only occasionally met at professional meetings once our professional lives took off in different cities. That said, our exchanges were always sincere and we were happy for each of our good fortunes. I am devastated to hear of his death. Melissa: You & Steve are wonderful people & have been so good to Kim, Gerry & me. We'll miss Steve & his sense of fun & humor. He was well versed on so many topics; I'll miss conversing w/him & exchanging viewpoints. We've had so many good times w/you both on & off the water. Racing has been such a big part of our lives; the Etchells class will miss him greatly. Just as Steve fought to win sailboat races, he put up a strong battle to win his fight for his health. His positive attitude is an example for all of us.

Grief stricken by the very sad loss of a loved family member. My brother-in-law Steve always displayed his tremendous heart to everyone in everything he did (a trait Steve had in common with his father and his siblings). Dr. Horwitz found a simple spot on my face. He did not like it. So he took a sample. The test came back and he was not happy with the test results. So he took another sample and sent it away for a special test. The results came back and he said it was more than he could deal with and I should seek an oncologist. I will never forget him him for the unselfish act of saying that he as a very famous Dermatologist did not know what the final test showed. That was five years ago. Rest in peace dear man!All of us that you served so long will miss you!
