Edwin Werlich Obituary

Dr. Edwin P. Werlich (1925-2016) Ed was born in Everett, Wash. on July 12, 1925. The family moved to Seattle, Wash. in 1932 and Ed graduated from Ballard High School in 1943. During his senior year, he enlisted in the Navy's V-12 (a) Program. After a year at Wabash College in Crawfordsville, Indiana, Ed began the flight program and was finishing flight training at the N.A.S in Corpus Christi, Texas when WWII ended. Ed elected discharge and enrolled at the University of Washington, receiving a Dental degree in 1953. Following a year's internship V.S.P.H.S Hospital in Seattle, Ed opened a private dental practice in Port Angeles, Wash. After six years of practice in Port Angeles, Ed returned to the UW and earned a Master's Degree in Orthodontics. He opened his practice in Everett, in 1962 and worked until his retirement in 1992. While in Dental School, Ed had knee surgery. Two close friends suggested that while in the hospital, Ed evaluate the nursing staff. As a result, all three friends married nurses. Sixty years, ten children, plus grand and great grandchildren later, with marriages intact, it was decided that it is was probably the most expensive and successful orthopedic surgery on record. Pauline Werlich (Phillips) supported Ed and when they opened their practice in Port Angeles, Polly was the receptionist, chairside assistant and financial officer. They have been a loving team through a wonderful life together and were blessed with two daughters, Amy and Jean (Jonathan) Way plus two very special granddaughters, Maggie and Abby. While in Port Angeles, Ed discovered steelhead fishing and became addicted. He acquired a U.S.A.F. life raft and converted it for river use fishing the Sol Duc, Bogachiel and Hon rivers on the Olympic Peninsula and the Sauk river near Darrington, Wash. Upon moving to Everett, a friend named Bob Vaara introduced him to fly fishing for summer run steelhead. This led to a fishing cabin on the Stillaguamish river. Ed caddied at the (no longer existing) Olympic Golf Club in North Ballard and worked at the club in various capacities. Golf became a big factor in his life and he cherished the game and his golfing friendships. Polly and Ed enjoyed retirement with stays at the cabin, trips to North Carolina, the Bahamas and memorable trips to Europe and New Zealand. Ed expressed the wish that all could have a fulfilling a life as he had been privileged to live and hopes they share the appreciation for great meatloaf and hamburgers. At his request, no formal services will be held but a celebration of life will take place on Sunday, March 20, 2016, at 1:00 p.m. at the Everett Golf and Country Club.

Please know he touched the lives of many through his practice and that his legacy lives on in countless smiles. May God grant you peace in this time of sorrow.

Dear Polly and Family,

Ed was such a fine person. He will be missed by all who knew him. My late husband, Kent, so enjoyed his company as they drove around the countryside and found great places for lunch.

Wishing you peace and healing,
Julie Langabeer

Ed and Polly have been dear friends of my parents for years... and in later years, my dad loved his lunches with Ed. They were quite the pair. My dad, Kent Langabeer, really valued his friendship. I am saddened to hear of Ed's passing. I am sending love and prayers for peace and light to Polly, their children and grand-kids.
Much love,
Sally Langabeer-Price

Dear Polly
So sorry to hear about you loss. The two of you have always been such wonderful people. I miss seeing you at Bridge and someday I will be able to get back to it. Sorry I had to miss the memorial - caught a nasty flue bug from my grandson and don't want to share it.

Our love to you - from Charlie & Barb Morgan

Dear Polly, Jean, Jonathan, Maggie and Abby:
Where do I begin?
When Ed and Polly moved in behind us in So. Evt we became fast friends. Ed and Bob shared winter and summer steelhead fishing-Woe to Polly and me! We became weekend widows.
Later we shared cabins next door to each other at Oso. We shared many Saturday nights with Scotch and sodas and steaks and fried potatoes on our outdoor fireplace over alder embers.
Not to mention the many steelhead dinners over the coals of the fireplace.
My most poignant memory of Ed was the day Bob took our son, Dick, to the Navy in Seattle. I sat crying my eyes out at the kitchen table when Ed knocked at our door and came to comfort me. He had served in WWII and he knew what I was feeling. He said "Ruth, twas ever thus". Mothers send their sons off to war. I'll never forget him for that day.
Hugs and prayers to you Polly and girls. Ruth

Dearest Polly, Jean and family:
Where do I begin? Wen you and Ed moved in behind us in So. Evt that was a memorable time in our family's life.
Ed was a winter steelhead fisherman and Bob was a summer steelhead fisherman-Woe to Polly and me. We were weekend widows! However that became a life-long friendship. Bob and I became Godparents to their daughter Jean and we now cherish their friendship with their two daughters, Maggie and Abby.
One of my cherished memories with Ed is when after my husband, Bob, left with our son, Dick, one 5:00am morning to deliver Dick to the USNavy in Seattle, I was crying my eyes out at the kitchen table when Ed arrived at our front door and came to comfort me as a Mother sending her son to war. He knew because he had served in WWII and he said,"Ruth, twas ever thus". I will never forget his kindness to me that day.
Love and prayers to all of you.

To my friend Jean. Regretfully, I am unable to attend the memorial service for your father. I want so much to honor him. He was indeed one of the best. All my memories are fond ones and bring a smile to my face...a smile he made...with the aid of 4 years of braces and "headgear" to boot. Deepest sympathy (empathy too) dear Jean and for your mom as well. She's a pea in the same pod as your Pop. My prayers are with you in this season.

Dr. Werlich put braces on me 45 years ago. I was deathly afraid of shots, and he always assured me "no shots." He was a super guy, and I loved hearing about his fish stories (though didn't like the one where the hook got in his eye.) My deepest condolences to his family on the loss of this terrific man, and may you find comfort in wonderful memories of the life you had together.

Deepest sympathies to the Werlich family from the Hornyak family. Ed was one of our dad's best friends - both on the golf course and off. Though their birthdays were separated by just 21 days, Dr. Werlich always took delight in pointing out that Dad was much older than he. Professionally, he and Polly helped improve a few Hornyak smiles. Dr. Werlich was a bright light for so many; we are grateful to have known him. He will be much missed.

Dr. Werlich had an uncanny ability to bring happiness to those around him. He was perpetually upbeat and found joy in many things. Whether spending time with him on the golf course, at the cabin near Oso, or around the dinner table sharing laughs with family and friends, you always knew time spent with Ed was going to be very special. He will be incredibly missed, but what a life he lived!

Dr. Werlich was my orthodontist, he was very kind and you felt he was a friend. I ran into him a few years ago and he was so surprised that I would remember him, he was so humble. RIP Dr. Werlich.

Of all the wonderful people I have had the opportunity to get to know working in the golf business, no one has touched my life more than Ed. From the various Pro Am's we played in to our "golf" trips over to Dunginess, which were really only an excuse to have breakfast at the Oak Table and Lunch...where ever. Ed and Polly traveled across the sound to be part of my wedding and invited Becky and I to his cabin several times for fishing and a good time. When I moved to Bellingham, Ed and Polly came up to visit us just to get the chance to meet our new son... I am sure there was some food involved in the trip as well. I appreciated the special bond Ed had with our Pro Bob Borup and how much Ed meant to Bob. Ed was one of a kind and we were all better people for knowing him. RIP
