ROCK HILL - Joseph Daniel Mitchum Sr., 86, went to his final home in Heaven on Thursday, March 15, 2012, after a glorious long life. A native of Bonneau, S.C., Joe lived in Rock Hill with his wife, Floyce Evelyn Winn Mitchum, to whom he was married for 69 years.
The Celebration of Life will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday, March 17, 2012, at Catawba Baptist Church, with Dr. Tommy Huddleston officiating and the Rev. Ron Richardson assisting. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
He loved his family and was the proud father of three children, Doris Evelyn McKinney (late husband, Richard) of Lancaster, Joseph "Danny" Mitchum Jr. (wife, Harriett) and Debra Elaine H. Wieland (husband, Ray), both of Rock Hill. He was PawPaw to 10 grandchildren, Kimberly VanCour, Dana Moree, Alethea McKinney, Julia McKinney, Lynn Mitchum, Joseph Hilton V, Richard McKinney, Jared Hilton, Laura W. LeBel and Mark Wieland; and 14 great-grandchildren.
He was the son of the late Josh Sumter Mitchum and Julia Catherine Harris Mitchum and was preceded in death by six sisters and five brothers.
Mr. Mitchum worked with the U.S. Forestry Service and was a fireman at the Charleston Naval Base during WWII. He retired from the Rock Hill Printing and Finishing Company in 1991 after 43 years of service. Joe also served as a shop steward for the Local 710 and was part of a committee instrumental in founding the Rock Hill Printing and Finishing Credit Union (Family Trust) and was an active volunteer of the credit union for over five decades. He served on the Board of Directors from 1985-2005 and on other committees until 2009.
A member of Catawba Baptist Church, he actively served his church in many ways including deacon, training union director, finance committee and cemetery committee over the years. He loved God and his family. He always had a smile and loved to help others. He liked being a volunteer in the community and enjoyed the gratification of "people helping people."
The family will receive friends prior to the service from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. at the church, and other times at the home of his daughter, Debbie Wieland, 3255 Harmony Road, Catawba, S.C.
Memorials may be given to Catawba Baptist Church, 1450 South Anderson Rd., Rock Hill, SC 29730; to Hospice & Community Care, P.O. Box 993, Rock Hill, SC 29731; or to a charity of your choice.
