Harry Hicklin Obituary

Harry Eugene Hicklin Jr. died on October 25, 2016 in Rock Hill, S.C. Mr. Hicklin was born in Chester County, S.C. the son of the late Harry Eugene Hicklin Sr. and Louise Simril Hicklin. He was married to the former Ellen Jordan of Richburg S.C. from 1948 until her death in 1997. He was a graduate of Oakley Hall High School where he was class valedictorian. Mr. Hicklin graduated from Presbyterian College in 1948, a family tradition: his father, brother, two sons and one grandson all being alumni: while at Presbyterian College he majored in Economics graduating cum laude; he was a member of Blue Key National Honor Society, Who's Who, President of Theta Chi Fraternity and served as Student Body President.

Mr. Hicklin began his career selling life insurance for Jefferson Standard Insurance Company in Greensboro, N.C. He subsequently became regional manager for Jefferson Standard for upstate S.C. In 1961 he was recruited by Standard Life Property and Casualty Company in Rock Hill to develop the company's life insurance division. He served as Agency Vice President at Standard Life until 1983. He then returned to the newly merged Jefferson-Pilot Corporation in Columbia S.C. until his retirement in 1991.

Mr. Hicklin was a member of Oakland Avenue Presbyterian Church in Rock Hill where he served as a deacon and an elder. He was an active alumnus of Presbyterian College serving as President of the Alumni Association, a member of the Board of Visitors and President of the Walter Johnson Scotsman Club. He also received the Mary F. Lehman service award for outstanding meritorious service to Presbyterian College. His civic involvement included the Rock Hill Jaycees and Rotary International

Mr. Hicklin is survived by his three children: Ellen Jordan Price (David) of Spartanburg, S.C; Harry Eugene Hicklin III, MD, (Leila) of Rock Hill; Septimus Marion Hicklin of Birmingham AL, a brother Cloud Hardin Hicklin, MD. His sister Mary Hicklin Rauch predeceased him. He has four grandchildren, David Alexander Price, Jr.; Jordan Hicklin Price; Harry Eugene Hicklin IV; Leila Barron Hicklin and four great grandchildren.

Visitation will be at Greene Funeral Home Northwest Chapel on Thursday, October 27, 2016 from 6-7:30 pm. Burial will be at 10:30 am Friday October 28, 2016 at Forest Hills Cemetery, 4290 Old York Road, Rock Hill S.C. with memorial service to follow at Oakland Avenue Presbyterian Church at 11:00.

Mr. Hicklin taught me at Ebenezer Avenue School many years ago. I remember him as a very nice teacher. I have thought of him many times through the years.
