Gary Grundy Obituary

Gary R. Grundy, 67, of Longboat Key, formerly of Richmond, VA, died peacefully at home on April 3, 2013. A service will be held at a later date. Funeral arrangements by: National Cremation and Burial Society. Born on March 13, 1946, he was the son of Allan H. Grundy Sr. and Gladys Ford Grundy. He attended VA Tech University and VA Commonwealth University. He had been employed by Philip Morris USA for 25 years in facilities management, and formerly by Old Dominion Camera Company. Gary was a Past President of the RealRail Model Train Club of Sarasota-Bradenton, volunteered at Mote Marine for Tampa Bay Redfish Stock Enhancement, won the Civic Beautification Award from Longboat Key Garden Club, won the Piedmont District and VA state awards for indoor gardening given by Virginia Federation of Garden Clubs, and won second place high points trophy for two successive years in CBYRA and MORC sailboat racing on Chesapeake Bay. He was raised in the Baptist Church, and served as Assistant Scout Master for a United Methodist Church scouting troop in Richmond. He was a friend of Roser Memorial Community Church, Anna Maria, FL; a member of the Sarasota Yacht Club, and former member of Fishing Bay Yacht Club. Gary also had many other interests, including scuba diving, snow skiing, hunting, shooting and photography. He was a member of the Coast Guard Auxiliary for ten years, and the only CGA sailing instructor for 5th Coast Guard district of the lower Chesapeake Bay area; he taught sailing for the Coast Guard Safe Boating course, and also taught the full sailing course. He is survived by his wife, Betsy; his brother, Allan H. Grundy, Jr., and sister-in-law, Jane Grundy; three nephews, Steve (Joyce) Grundy, Mark (Susan) Grundy, and Jim Grundy; great nephew, Patrick Grundy; and great nieces, Laura Grundy, Megan (Ryan) Johnson, and Kathleen Grundy. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials be made to Mote Marine Laboratory, 1600 Ken Thompson Parkway, Sarasota, FL 34236; RealRail, P. O. Box 239, Tallevast, FL 34270; Roser Memorial Community Church, 512 Pine Avenue, Anna Maria, FL 34216; or Tidewell Hospice, 5955 Rand Boulevard, Sarasota, FL 34238.

It is with sad heart to learn of Gary's passing. Though I never had the opportunity to know him well, he must have been a really special person or you would not have chosen him to be your own. Our prayers are with you during this time of sorrow and I am so sorry for your loss. Miles have kept us apart since high school, but school friends are always in our hearts and soul. We mourn with you.
