Wm. Eugene Maher passed away peacefully at home Sunday, Nov. 21, 2010. The cause was cancer. He was 75 years old and had resided in Venice since August of 2008. Peter D. Sayer, his loving partner in life and work for 38 years, was at his side.
"Gene" Maher was born in the Bronx, N.Y., Feb. 24, 1935, to Anna and Francis Maher. He was a graduate of Cardinal Hayes High School and Pratt Institute, both in New York. With a degree in fine arts, he became an interior designer, working for several prominent firms. At the office of John Carl Warnecke and Associates in New York, he met Mr. Sayer, who was one of the architects for the Nimitz Library at the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis. Together, they completed that project. In 1975. Mr. Maher became a partner in Walker Group, a well-known retail design firm in New York.
In 1980, he and Mr. Sayer established their own firm, Maher & Sayer, Interior Architecture and Design, in New York. Their projects covered the eastern seaboard and California. They specialized in corporate and retail design, with clients that included Bergdorf Goodman, Hermes, Kidde Inc., WestSphere Capital and Egon Zehnder International.
Mr. Maher and Mr. Sayer built a home in Ridgefield, Conn., where they lived for over 30 years. Gene was involved in a number of community activities including AmeriCares and the Ridgefield Workshop for the Performing Arts, now the Ridgefield Theatre Barn.
Survivors include his sister, Carol Maher Steel of Manhattan; two nieces; two nephews; and a large extended family of Mahers, Bartsches, Sayers and dear friends. He was predeceased by his parents and older brother.
A funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Nov. 26, at Saint Mark's Church on Venice Island. A reception will follow the services.
In July 2011, a service of burial will occur in Wading River, N.Y., the site of the family summer beach house, which will be followed by a festive celebration of Gene's life.
