James Fonnesbeck Obituary

Mesquite, Nevada/Weston, Idaho - James Brent Fonnesbeck passed Sunday, Oct. 9, in a tragic accident in Mesquite, Nev., doing what he loved: Skydiving and sharing that love with others. Jim was born May 14, 1951, the third son of J. Myron (Mike) Fonnesbeck and Loneta Hollingsworth Fonnesbeck. Jim spent his youth in Weston, Idaho, on the farm where he learned hard work and to enjoy life. He attended West Side High School and then graduated from Idaho State University with a degree in environmental engineering.
He was employed as an engineer and designed water treatment facilities for Clark County, Nev. The facility in Laughlin, Nev., commemorates one of his achievements bearing his name.
However, those of us that knew him know his primary source of satisfaction and enjoyment was skydiving. He traveled the world competing in this endeavor and won several medals in his lifetime. He competed in 1972 in South Africa and France against teams from all over the world including the Russian National Skydiving Team, where the American team won gold medals. His skydiving career spanned 40 years and 11,000 jumps.
He is survived by his mother, Loneta Fonnesbeck; his brothers, Bruce Fonnesbeck and Rodney Fonnesbeck; his daughter, Sydney Elkins; and two grandchildren, Nicole and Shelisa; and his sweetheart, Jean Vergilio.
He will be remembered for his passion for living life to the fullest and will be sorely missed by those he left behind. He is preceded in death by his younger brother, Hollis Fonnesbeck, and his father, J. Myron. He will rest in peace next to them in Weston.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, Oct. 15, 2011, at 11 a.m. at Webb Funeral Home, 1005 S. 800 East, Preston, Idaho. A viewing will be held Friday, Oct. 14, from 6 to 8 p.m. and Saturday from 10 to 10:45 a.m., also at the funeral home. Interment will be in the Weston, Idaho, Cemetery.

He gave me the greatest adrenaline rush of my life at a farmers airstrip in Thomas, Idaho, just outside of Blackfoot, in 1987. He probably wouldn't have remembered me, but I will never forget him, he definitely made an impression. My sympathy for your loss.

I will always remember the good visits Jim and I had at my flower shop. I have always had great respect for his desire to do in life what he really loved. I was able to do that in my profession, and we often compared. Loneta, Bruce and your family, Our thoughts and prayers are with you even though we are not able to be there. May the good memories you have, help you through this most difficult time. You have had more than your share in the past and we wish you didn't have to go through this loss.

My deepest sympahties. Tho I didn't know that much about him - - being a "Fonnesbeck" cousin makes this a tradgety that is hard to understand why. Family is what keeps us together no matter. My heart felt condolences to those who were close to Jim.
