John Emmett Obituary

John William Emmett died at his home Sept. 27, 2010, of complications from melanoma. John was born to Harriet Dudley and Roland Emmett in Logan, Utah, on April 25, 1927. He was preceded in death by his sisters Lucille (Ralph) Dorius, Dorothy (Clair) Nelson, Pat (James) McMurrin; his brother Dudley (Gwen) Emmett; two infant daughters, an infant grandson and an infant granddaughter. He is survived by his sister JoAnn (Martin) Hickman and brother-in-law Bill Fife.
John met his wife, Norda Fife, at Utah State Agricultural College, and they were married Aug. 20, 1948, in the Salt Lake City LDS Temple. They have six children - Bill (Lorie) Emmett, Bob (Annie) Emmett, Chad (Marie) Emmett, Jake (Lesa) Emmett, Mary (Jim) Lundberg and Tom (Shelly) Emmett - 30 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
After graduating from the University of Utah Medical School, John served for two years in the U.S. Army. John was the first radiologist to practice in Logan. He served on the Logan City School Board for 15 years. He also served on the USU Alumni Council for several years. He has worked with the Ellen Eccles Theater since the beginning of its restoration, continuing to serve on the board of trustees for the Cache Valley Center for the Arts. A proud Rotarian, John most recently served as the Rotary Club president at age 82. In addition, John and Norda were able to serve as LDS missionaries in Connecticut.
John has always been a faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Starting as a nursery teacher in Minneapolis, he then was able to serve in many callings including bishop's counselor, bishop, and a member of the Logan Central Stake presidency. He loved service and loved his family, and his greatest happiness was found in skiing with his family and the posse at Beaver Mountain.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 1, in the Logan 10th Ward Chapel. Those wishing to express condolences may do so at the Nelson Funeral Home on Thursday, Sept. 30, from 6 to 8 p.m. or from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. on Friday at the Logan 10th Ward. Dear Emmett Family,
Pam and I are so sorry to hear about the passing of your father. As my High Priest leader I was taught by one who truly knew and loved the Gospel. Having had the opportunity to serve as your parent's bishop, your dad's love for the 18th Ward was evident in all he did. He was a great neighbor - a man who loved to be active and to serve others. He was a go-getter! I will never forget when the mistake was made on your parent's mission call and they were assigned to a warm climate, that your dad had it all cleared up before anyone even knew he had his call! Off they went to where they could be cool and serve in the spirit of gladness. He helped our children learn to ski at Beaver Mountain.I know what it is to lose a loved one. This is when the Gospel truths truly come to light.

Dear Emmett family -- I am sorry to hear about Dr. Emmett's passing. I have wonderful memories with Mary and your family: riding up to Beaver in the motor home, skiing at Targhee, playing in the backyard treehouse, and riding in the cool old-fashioned car. I fondly remember when Dr. Emmett took Mary and I in the motor home to General Conference. After the priesthood session we went out for ice cream and met one of the General Authorities. It was always fun with the Emmetts! My thoughts and prayers are with your family. Much love to Mary!

Sincerely,
Shari Mortenson Nyman

Dear Chad and family,

I was sorry to learn of your father's passing. I never had the privilege of meeting him, but I have heard so much about him from others. It sounds like he passed on a lot of his character (and his humor) to his children. That is his best legacy.

Dear Emmett family,
I always had the greatest respect and admiration for your dad, and your mom, growing up in the Logan 10th Ward. He always had such a ready smile and a warmth that made you feel important. May the peace of the comforter be with all your family now and always. Jan Craw Cain and the Wayne Craw family

I came to know John and Norda from the stories Bob shared during our many years working at LSI. From all reports John knew how to be a positve force, was a great Dad and lived and enjoyed his full life. Our loved ones show us the way to live life and cherish famil and they remain with us at all times.

Our thoughts go out to you at this time of loss.

Memories of being at the Emmett home before LOTOJA with family and friends will be forever dear to our hearts. Norda and John always welcomed us as family and treated us as such. Peach ice cream and the great company we enjoyed at the Emmett home has been as sweet as life gets. Thanks John and Norda for always opening your home and being examples of friendship and love.

Of all the great things about Logan, Spudnuts, Blue Bird candy, swimming in the fish pond, Grandma Emmett's feather bed, the greatest was going to John and Noorda's for curry, cousins and fun. Uncle John has always been the foundation of the extended family and it's going to be hard to replace a man like that. All the Holley's in Las Vegas send their love and admiration for the whole Emmett family.

Our condolences to your entire family. Many of my best memories through high school involve the Emmett home, Hi-C grape, Norda and Doc. He was one of the really good guys. All of our lives are that much better for having known him and benefitted from his life and influence. A life well lived and an example to all who knew him. His kids aren't half bad either! Our best to you all.

What a great guy! The last time I spoke with Doc Emmett was skiing on little Beaver - he was trying out those two new knees and wondering if it was a good idea - and still cracking jokes. I guessed that he was there without his doctor's permission - he suggested that we should probably just keep it a secret. I count myself lucky to have known him and all your family. Bill - you're still the best powder skier I know. Bob & the rest of us have great memories chasing you down the backside - and all those trips to Targee. My best to each of you. Your father will be greatly missed. Love,
