Louis Riggs Obituary

PROVIDENCE - Louis "Bus" Riggs passed away Oct. 30, 2009, at Sunshine Terrace with his family at his side. His death was a result of an auto accident in Salmon, Idaho.
He was born July 24, 1928, in Benson, Utah, to Louis B. and Lucille Sophia "Lucy" Thompson Riggs. He married JoAnn Williamson on Feb. 7, 1949, in Las Vegas, Nev.
He graduated from North Cache High School at the age of 16. Shortly after graduation he joined the Merchant Marines and served for one year. Upon returning from the service, he helped on the family farm for several years. After he and JoAnn married, he embarked on his career as a drywaller.
Bus developed a love for the outdoors at an early age and spent many years hunting deer and elk on Buck Mountain and various places in the Naomi Wilderness Area and Cache National Forest with family and friends. He also developed a passion for fishing, which he pursued vigorously. Bus fished not only the rivers and dams of Cache Valley, but also areas of Alaska, Washington and Idaho. Years ago, one of Bus's friends introduced him to fishing on the North Fork of the Salmon River, near Salmon, Idaho. He claimed once you've been to "The River" and fished, "The River" flowed in your blood. He was hooked and through this passion, his second home and family were born. He loved "The River" and all that came with it. He always said it was "The River of No Return," but we are grateful that it spared him enough time to come home and say good-bye after his accident.
Bus is survived by his two daughters, Kathy Riggs of Mesquite, Nev., and Cindy (Jed) Cronquist of Thatcher, Idaho. Dad is also survived by a special person he always referred to as his "third daughter," Jennifer Bill of North Fork, Idaho. He is survived by seven grandchildren, Justin Riggs, Brandon Smith, Heather Riggs Eyman, Amanda Smith, Joshua Riggs, Lyndsie Cronquist and Brigg Cronquist; and six great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sisters, Trilva Poppel of Roy, Utah, and Delores (Doddie) LaMont of St. George, Utah; and brother, Gerald Riggs of Bountiful, Utah. He was preceded in death by his wife, JoAnn; son, Terry Louis Riggs; and his parents, Louis B. and Lucy Riggs.
Dad enjoyed a good horse, good book, good gun and a good beer. Dad was known as a great storyteller and often wrote poems of wit and humor triggered by hunting and fishing adventures. We will miss him and hope he finally catches the "Big One."
Funeral services will be at noon Wednesday, Nov. 4, in the Allen-Hall Mortuary Chapel. A viewing will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the mortuary and from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Wednesday at the mortuary, prior to services. Interment will be in the Logan City Cemetery. Condolences may be sent to the family at www.allenmortuaries.net.

Sorry to hear of your father's death. My father shared the news with me. My sympathies to you - especially Cindy who I remember to be so much fun in high school. After reading about your dad, it's no wonder you were so cheerful, you had some of your dad's genes. With love, Gaye

Nobody could tell a story like Bus. I especially enjoyed his Merchant Marine stories and those of "Old" New York. But it was accounts of everyday life that made my eyes water and my stomach hurt the most. You knew you were in trouble when he began with (use your Bus voice here) "You can believe it or not..." or "I'll tell you what..." Bus was a great tomato grower. Some of the best in town. If you stopped by his house in August, he would always have 50-60 tomatoes on the picnic table, right next to the salt & pepper (which was in the same shaker). Tomatoes were lined-up according to size, ripeness and grade. I believe he named everyone but I could never get him to admit to it. Thanks for the laughs Bus!

Bussey was a fine fisherman, consumate poet and the best fire tender I knew on the Salmon River. He was so well known and liked because of his authentic and true nature. Time is but the stream he went fishing in! I will miss his fire and hospitality, Schatzi

RIVER TO THE SEA BUS RIGGS. We have lost our keeper of the fire and teller of ' tall stories'. We are going to miss you but we will still talk about you as we share a beer or rum and coke around your fire. Mostly good things, Bus...I think you would probably say " I'm just passing the torch to some of you older fishermen ". Gary & Mary Busch

I first met Bussy on "The River" in the spring of 1996 - I was 15. You would never know that he wasn't actually my grandpa. He is one of the most colorful, special people I have ever met. I have so many special memories of the time we spent on the river. It won't be the same there without him, but I know that every time I return, he'll be there with me.

My exposure to Bus has been limited, but highly enriched. Bus was the best story teller and you got enthralled in the adventures he took you on with his words. I told Kathy at my last trip out to Utah, someone needed to be writing Bus's stories down and publishing them for the rest of the world to be able to share. Bus will be missed by all who knew him, but I also think he will be enjoyed by those he meets on the other side. He probably is searching for that trophy fish right now.
