JOHN PEREZ Obituary

JOHN JOSEPH PEREZ was surrounded by family and friends when he passed away peacefully on August 21, 2010. A native of Houston, he was born April 14, 1955. The eldest son of John and Theresa Perez.John was a 1973 graduate of St. Thomas High School and a 1977 graduate of the University of St. Thomas. He went on to pursue graduate studies at the University of Houston College of Optometry where he earned a doctorate in Optometric Sciences in 1982. A member of the Texas Optometric Association since 1985, he was elected president of the National Optometric Association serving from 1995 1997. He was a strong supporter of the Optometric Sciences and believed his profession to be the front line of healthy eye and vision care. Under his leadership, these organizations were instrumental in influencing the Texas Legislature to pass a bill allowing optometrists to prescribe medications in the treatment of eye disease, infections and injuries. Serving as a board and committee member, he also received the 25 year service award in 2010 from the Texas Optometric Association. In 1994, John and Zenaida were married. In 2000 they were blessed with a daughter. Alyssa was the apple of her daddy's eye, and was a devoted father to her. John and Zenaida, being firm believers of a catholic education sent Alyssa to Duchesne Academy of the Sacred Heart, where John was a volunteer coach and staunch supporter of Alyssa's extracurricular activities including the Indian Princess Program. He is preceded in death by his mother, Theresa G. Perez and infant sister, Maria Theresa Perez. He is survived by the loves of his life, his wife, Zenaida "Zenny" Perez and daughter, Alyssa Renee Perez, his father, John Perez, Jr., brothers, Javier S. Perez and wife Patricia; Roman R. Perez and wife Elizabeth; Jaime G. Perez and wife, Veronica and Martin Perez and companion Myra Ramirez; along with numerous nieces, nephews and devoted friends.John is lovingly remembered as a devoted father and family man, who adored his extended family and started family traditions of Easter weekends at Surfside Beach and Disney Vacations to Florida and California. He was never happier than when enthralled with family members, no matter what the occasion.A rosary and service to celebrate his life will be held Tuesday, August 24, 2010 at 7 p.m. at Morales Funeral Home, 2901 Canal St. A Mass of Resurrection will be conducted at 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, August 25, 2010 at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, 4918 Cochran St., Houston, TX. August 30, 2010

I first met John when I was a student member of the National Optometric Association. I remember thinking, "This guy is really intense. He should lighten up." I learned during that convention and others that he was a REALLY nice guy and a bit of a jokester.
In addition, he freely shared the wealth of information he had accumulated and I, along with countless others, am much better off having known John.
Thank you Perez family for sharing John with us.

I am and truly saddened to learn of the passing of Johnny Joe, who I know through marriage and first met when he was just a young boy. I saw him grow up and achieve his goal and degree and was there to celebrate with him and his family so many years ago. He was always a fun person to be around, much like his Father who liked to joke and just enjoy life. He was a good man and I am just sorry I was not able to attend the service honoring his life. You will be greatly missed.

I grew up with Johnny Joe's family, and he was the oldest and the more responsible one, unless he got behind that RX-7. Then he would go butt wild, scared the heck out of me. This wide grin on his face, and I holding on as tight as I could. As a young man he was fun to be around. As a husband and father he did what good husbands and fathers are to do. I'll miss Johnny Joe but I will always have my memories of him. Be well, Johnny Joe and family.

My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family in this time of grief. It is very difficult loosing someone so close to you. I lost my sister last year and it has been tough, but know they are in a wonderful place now.

August 25, 2010

I had the privilege of working with Dr. Perez during legislative efforts at the capitol. He was dedicated to the field of optometry and TOA, but it paled in comparison to love he had for his family.

Optometry has lost a true ally and a good man.

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.

Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."

It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man.

God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.

When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.

I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.

There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.

If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.

So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.

And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.
