William White Obituary

William Byrd "Bill" White passed into eternal rest on Sunday, the 20th of November 2011. White was born in a farm house near McCrory, Arkansas, on the 10th of April 1924, where the White family farmed since the 1850s. White's father died during the Depression, and he handled his share of farm chores while he attended a small school and developed a lifelong habit of reading, beginning with the Bible.
White served in the U.S. Third Army during World War II. After landing at Omaha Beach several days after the initial assault in 1944, he fought until wounded by German artillery and began recuperation in Birmingham, England. He was redeployed during the Battle of the Bulge. After being furloughed at Fort Sam Houston, White was the first in his family to graduate from college, Trinity University in San Antonio. Later he received a master's degree in history from Southwest Texas State University.
At Trinity University he met Gloria Howard, his wife for 63 years.
An exceptional athlete and coach, White coached a team from the Southside of San Antonio to the championship of the Pony League World Series in 1952. He also coached winning Peewee, Colt and American Legion baseball teams.
Bill White worked as a teacher, coach and administrator in various public schools in San Antonio, Texas, for forty years. They included schools in the Harlandale, San Antonio, Ft. Sam Houston and Alamo Heights school districts. He received numerous teaching and coaching awards. Students remember his insistence on high standards and his engaging and irreverent wit.
He also taught during the summers at San Antonio College, Texas Military Institute and at a veterans program. As a principal he had a reputation for fairness and high performance, and was selected "Boss of the Year" in 1981 by the Business Woman's Association of San Antonio.
For almost two decades he served as general manager of Fiesta Noche del Rio, an annual summer musical review that raised millions of dollars for children's charities of the Alamo Kiwanis Club. The show was performed on the riverwalk next to San Antonio's historic La Villita. For 23 years, while teaching, he also worked at nights at the downtown Joske's Department Store.
He and his wife were early members of San Antonio's St. Stephen's United Methodist Church, where they taught Sunday school. They later became members of San Antonio's University United Methodist Church and Houston's First United Methodist Church. Throughout his life, White lived his faith and abhorred stereotypes and injustice.
In his retirement, Bill White enjoyed reading, family activities, and participation in running, swimming, biking and skiing. White swam a mile a day most days of the week until beginning cancer treatment earlier this year, after turning 87.
Bill White was preceded in death by his parents, William Bradford White and Lilly Byrd White; his sisters, Phoebe Ann Johnson and Mary Taylor; and his son, the late Robert Avalon White. His survivors include his wife Gloria White; his sister, Helen Shinn; his son and daughter-in-law, Bill and Andrea White; and grandchildren, Will, Elena and Stephen White. Friends Wayne Dockery, Edward Ruckstuhl, and Scott Bage also survive him. All reside in Houston, except for Mrs. Shinn, who lives in Boerne, and Mr. Bage, of San Antonio. The family also desires to express their thanks to Amelia and Andrew Cruz for their care.
Friends are cordially invited to gather with the family and share remembrances of Bill's life from half-past four o'clock in the afternoon until half-past seven o'clock in the evening tomorrow, Monday, the 28th of November, in the Grand Foyer of Geo. H. Lewis & Sons, 1010 Bering Drive in Houston.
In lieu of customary remembrances, contributions in memory of Bill White may be directed to First United Methodist Church of Houston, 1320 Main St., Houston, TX, 77002.

I can't listen to the news on TV or the radio or read the newspapers without remembering Mr. White and our Advance Social Science Problems class I took as an elective for 2 years. He was hands down the best teacher I ever had.

a considerate man to accomodate all. Expressive as a poet and hilarious as a comedian came natural. Enjoy your heavenly life as you reunite with your son Robert. God Bless

Unfortunately I never had Mr. White as a teacher while I was a student at Edison (Class of 61) but his "battles" with Mrs. Bailey, my Texas history teacher, were infamous. I had the privilege of driving Mr. White to the Friday nite program of our Edison 50th reunion.......what a delightful man. My true condolences to his family.

I was lucky enough to have both American History and home room with Mr. White at Edison. The homeroom class was called the Beau Brummel club. He was my favorite teacher and instilled a love of history that I have to this day. My condolences to his family.

I remember Mr. White and Ms. Bailey and their famous "war" of words that would circulate among the students at Thomas Edison. Mr. White was appreciated not only as a teacher but as a person who was intelligent, friendly, caring and fun. A true educator. I enjoyed talking with him in October when he attended our 50th year high school reunion. He said he remembered me and my friend Mary. Quite the educator and a gentleman who will be remembered for a long time to come.

Mr. White was my favorite teacher of all! I took his course entitled Advanced Social Science Problems as an elective in my Jr. and Sr. Years at R. G. Cole HIgh School. It was the greatest learning experience of my life. He taught me to read about what was happening in the world and then analyze the situation and form my own opinions. I still follow the news and feel I am able to understand and evaluate what is going on and make my own decisions.

I remember clearly him talking about how the U. S. government will correct itself over a period on time if it goes too far left or right. (I wish our Congress had taken his class.)

There is another reason he is especially memorable. My mother attended a PTA meeting where, she got to visit all my classes, the minute she saw Mr. White she realized she knew him. My mother was from Augusta, Arkansas and knew him when he was growing up near McCrory, I think in Fitzhugh, my memory if a bit vague. Any way because of the childhood connection with my mother, it was important for me to perform well in my classes.

He was also an outstanding teacher of American History. I can vividly remember him challenging the boys in our class by asking them what was required to make a "miniball" fire from a musket.

He will be missed.

Bill White was my favorite teacher and the one who had the most influence on my life. Becuase of him I developed a lifelong love of history and current events. I married a Foreign Service officer and we were assigned to many exciting places, I always wondered, "What would Bill White think of me now?
He was funny, witty, always sharp and ready to put us through our paces, no one escaped his questions and his needling if you were not prepared! I know I speak for hundreds of his students when I say we have lost a teacher, a mentor and a friend.

Doc White certainly was one of my very favorite persons, having recognized how well balanced he was in all aspects of life, including understanding and realizing how to get rid of ugliness and manage a smile, a laugh, and a hug. He was a wonderful human being, one I always called "friend". I will continue to always pray for the family!

Mr. White was such a wonderful teacher and brought American History to life and in doing so instilled our love for history! He loved telling us about WWII, and I remember one story he told was about trying to catch a chicken while in Europe during the war and just about the time he thought he had it, a wall came tumbling down on him! I can still see the classroom and Mr. White creating in our imaginations his escapades. He will always be remembered by students that attended Edison High School. And, his friendly feuds with Mrs. Bailey were always entertaining, as well! His memories became our memories. God bless...Linda Summers Spyres, Edison, Class of 1961.

I have raved about Mr. White for years, always considered him my favorite teacher of all times and told so many people about him. I have also followed with great interest his son's political career and was overjoyed to see Mr. White join his son in a TV political ad when the younger Mr. White was running for mayor of Houston. He and his wife joined our church while I was in high school (Los Angeles Heights UMC) where my father was his pastor for the next number of years before my father was sent to another appointment. Mr. White was an inspiration to scores of students lucky enough to be in his classes. As another former student said, he taught us to think for ourselves. RIP, beloved teacher and friend. Bill White, the teacher and administrator, what a great conveyor and distributor of information and adult coaching you were!

In 1959 and 1960 at Edison High School in San Antonio, he grabbed my attention by telling his Current Events class stories of WW2 exploits and other very important changes in the geo-economic-political environment. A very neat fellow who tricked/persuaded/coached students to think for themselves and be independent! He definitely stands out as one of the Top Five teachers I had throughout public school and at the university levels.

Thank you, Bill White, for the excellent teaching and administration, for your challenges and for the great education. And, also, for that fantastic story about the WW2 Yank GI making his way through France and Germany, and seeing that big fancy ring on the finger of a dead soldier. You captured the attention of a lot of young boys (and probably lost the attention of a lot of young girls) with that riveting story! It was cool, Bill!

Rest in Peace, Teach! ! ! You did very well with your life, Bill....

A name is better than good oil, and the day of death than the day of one's being born. (Ecclesiastes 7:1) It's a constant reminder that what matter most is how we use our gift of life and not how long we had it. To Mr White's family please accept our deep sympathy.

Seeing Bill White at our Edison Class Reunion last fall brought back so many memories that I can't count them all, but for sure he was the most inspiring teacher I had throughout all my school years. He made American History and Current Events come alive for me and above all, he taught me to think for myself and carry on an intelligent dialogue even when I disagreed with him. He will be missed by so many! I send my condolences to his family and friends and hope they all know how many lives he influenced in such a positive way. RIP Mr. White.

It was with deep regret that I learned my friend and mentor Mr. Bill White had passed away. He was a great friend, coach and teacher. He and his wife raised a fine family, and I know he will be surely missed by all who knew him. My dad Russell Lindsay and I had great respect and admiration of him. The good news is that we will see Bill, again, someday. God Bless.

Dear Mayor White and Family,

My late mother, Gracene Kennedy, also lived at the Forum and your parents showed her great kindness after my father passed away by including her in occasional dinner meals. Your father was always a lovely gentleman and very friendly. I am so sorry for your loss but I know you will cherish your memories.

Having Bill White for my history and current events teacher at Edison High School from 1959-1961 was a blessing in my life. His wonderful combination of intelligence, enthusiasm and humor, especially the humor, made previously dry school subjects become interesting and relevant. My understanding and appreciation of America's history and political system come directly from him. My deepest sympathy to all his family.

What a phenomenal man he was. He was always there for us as students at Cole HS. He is the reason I became a teacher and I actually ended up teaching history. I know this is a very sad time for you, but GOD has a plan, and right now HE is holding you in the palm of HIS hands until you get through this. My deepest sympathy.

Mr. White was the Assistant Principal at Cole H.S. when I attended there in 1966-67. He was a good administrator and instructor, and an active sponsor for the Student Council and many other student activities. He was liked and respected by all his students and the entire faculty. My condolences to Mrs. White and his entire family.

I only attended Cole HS for my senior year, but even for that one year, Mr. White made an impression on me. Tough, fair, honorable - he was one of those people you never forget. I know his family has great pride in the man he was throughout his life. Rise on eagle's wings, Mr. White.

I, and many more "Army Brats" whose Fathers were stationed at Fort Sam Houston in the early sixties were elated to have him as the Assistant Principal of our school. Mr. White was likley the mentor for alot of kids who attended Robert G.Cole High School. When I moved to Houston after a stint in the U.S. Navy and saw a young man also named Bill White on television politicing I could hardly believe my eyes. I thought, WOW he has the same name and looks like Bill White. That is when I discovered he was the son of my mentor. I thought "if" his son had the faith and leadership skills he would make Houston a great Mayor. In my opinion I thought he followed in his father's foot steps and is a leader as his father was. Bill, I am representing the kids you taught at Robert G. Cole and appreciated your guidance and caring. Gerald Broussard, class of 1964.
