Jean Cunningham Obituary

Jean Miller Cunningham
1934-2014
JEAN MILLER CUNNINGHAM went to live in her Father's house of many mansions, NOVEMBER 29, 2014. She was born in Houston, Texas, December 9, 1934. She graduated from Milby High School, where she was an honor student, active in several clubs and co-captain of the Volley Ball Team. While attending The University of Houston, she married her childhood sweetheart, Allen B. Cunningham.
The couple lived in College Station, Texas before moving to San Antonio, where Allen was stationed in The United States Air Force. When Allen left the Air Force, the couple built a home in Houston.
Jean was a person of many talents. She fashioned her wedding dress of white satin and French lace with hand sewn seed pearls around a scalloped neckline and forty- two hand sewn satin covered buttons with loops down the back. For many years she took great pleasure in creating little dresses for her nieces. She painted in oil and water colors. Jean was also a gourmet cook and a great admirer of Julia Childs. She brought fabulous desserts to family gatherings and kept all the children in the family supplied with "goodies" from Aunt Jean's kitchen. She was very creative and loved beauty. The windows of their home were often graced with African Violets and Orchids and she grew Stag Horn Ferns, and variety of Begonias on their patio.

Jean and Allen traveled to many countries, however, the trips they enjoyed the most were the ones to College Station. Whether the trip was for a football game or to attend other functions, it would be the highlight of her week. She took great joy in contributing to scholarships for deserving students, The Student Memorial Center, and the giving of the Aggie Ring to their nieces and nephew upon their graduation.
Jean lived very close to our Lord and the new commandment he gave to "Love one another." Those who knew her felt that love. She has given us many sweet memories.
Jean was preceded in death by her loving husband of sixty years, Allen Baxter Cunningham and her parents, Gilbert and Anita King Miller. She is survived by her sister, Joy Nicoll and husband, Harold; brother, Howell King Scroggins; nephews, Harold Gilbert Nicoll and wife, Marla; David Howell Scroggins and wife, Blanca; nieces, Julie Evans and husband, Kurt; Susan George and husband Robert and Karen Staggers; great nephews, Joseph and Jonathan Scroggins; Chase Staggers; great nieces, Jamie and Jennifer Evans; Kelly Welling and husband, Glenn; Katy Cunningham and husband, Jeff; Laura George and numerous other great-great nephews, nieces, cousins and dear friends.
A visitation will be held on Saturday, December 6, 2014 in The Rosewood Chapel, 2602 S Houston Ave., Humble, Texas at 9:00 A.M. with services at 10:00 A.M. Burial will be immediately following in the Rosewood Cemetery. Serving as Pallbearers: Harold G. Nicoll, Harold I. Nicoll, Robert George, Kurt Evans, David Scroggins, and Chase Staggers.
If you so desire, the family requests that gifts be made to the Texas A&M Foundation Memorial Scholarship Fund. Checks should be made payable to the Texas A&M Foundation and mailed to 401 George Bush Drive, College Station, Texas 77840-2811. Please note on your check "in memory of Mr. and Mrs. Allen B. Cunningham".

The Greater Houston Model A Club is heart broken and saddened at the loss of Jean and her precious Allen. Not only were they a tremendous asset to the club they were two of the finest people you would ever hope to meet. Kind, gentle, loving, caring, talented, giving and most of all wonderful Christians whose testimony and legacy will forever live in the hearts of all who knew them. Our hearts are broken but also we are joyful that they are in a better place and God chose to let them be together.

Jean and Allen were the first to welcome us into the Houston Restorers Model A Club which they so enjoyed for many years. We became good friends to such a kind and fun couple and fellow Aggies! We were dining with them minutes before the accident and Jean spoke of Allen's 60 yr class reunion and their 60th wedding anniversary and how special that was for them. She joked that she deserved a gold star for having been married to an Aggie for 60 yrs! Then followed by saying Allen deserved one too for putting up with her for 60 yrs. They both grinned! So...we will bring their Aggie gold stars attached to an Aggie sign to the funeral so she will get her wish! Our sympathy to the family. They will both be missed but we have lots of fond memories.

Jean was a talented and gracious individual. She made their home a warm and welcoming place. She was a perfect complement to Allen, as he was to her. We are glad that they were able to share in so many activities and in their philanthropy--and can only wish that they had more than their 60 years together to enjoy them. The world is the worse for their passing.
Our deepest sympathies and most sincere condolences to their immediate and extended families
