James Goode Obituary

James Douglas "Jim" Goode
1944-2016
James Douglas "Jim" Goode, founder of Goode Company Restaurants, King of Mesquite and Texas Legend, passed away peacefully at his home on Tuesday, the 2nd of February 2016. He was 71.
Jim was born on the 15th of April 1944, and grew up in Freeport, Velasco and Clute on the Texas Gulf Coast. He was the youngest son of immigrant parents, John Stuckey and Emma Longoria Goode of Tampico, Tamaulipas, Mexico. He quit school at the age of 16, went to California, pretending to be older than he was on his application so that he could enlist in the US Navy during the Vietnam War. He became a SeaBee and was stationed in Okinawa, Japan. Once he finished his tour, he came back to Texas and with the help of his sister, he applied to art school in New York. He enrolled and attended the Milton Glaser School of Visual Arts in New York City. After completing art school, he returned to Houston and started working as a commercial graphic artist. He entertained his clients by smoking BBQ for them and they all commented on how great the food always was. After several years in the creative world where he had grown weary of working with ad executives whom would challenge his price once the work was complete, he determined that a career change was in order. He decided to either open up a bait camp (he was an avid fisherman) or a BBQ joint on the side of the road.
In 1977, he went into the local BBQ joint once known as BBQ Barn on Kirby and sat with a beer watching the employees being lazy in the kitchen. The place was empty and the lady behind the register asked him what he was doing. He said he was thinking of opening a BBQ place and she responded that it was a bad idea and that she hated the BBQ business but it had been her husband's passion, and he had left it to her after his death. She said she couldn't wait to get out of that business. So, in his typical way, he casually asked her how much she'd take for the place. She replied, "How much have you got?" He said he had $3000 in savings and was waiting to get paid for an art job that he'd done designing the logo for Joske's Department Store, which would be another $3000. She told him to be there the next day with his $3000 in savings and she'd give him the keys and he could just send her the rest of the money when he got the check from Joske's.
That was the beginning of Goode Company Restaurants, his life's dream and his life's work. That next day he got to work with the help of his family and friends cleaning and painting the place to be ready to open in a few days. He worked there, slept there at nights with the help of his Uncle Joe Dixie, who was a cook in a Japanese prison camp during WWII, tending to the fire and the meat. People started coming to eat there and one of his happiest days was when he realized that he had 2 bags of trash to take out at the end of the day because he had served that many people. He held those bags over his head like the movie "Rocky". In so many ways he was a real life champion for so many – his customers, his employees and his family. He continued cooking and later opened Goode Company Hamburgers & Taqueria, Goode Company Seafood, two more Goode Company BBQ's and Goode's Armadillo Palace. He never stopped thinking, creating, evolving and reinventing the way that Houston experienced dining. His vision for food will leave a lasting and indelible mark on Houston and the Gulf Coast. His passion was only equaled by the incredible talent and creativity that he brought to the kitchen.
He was very generous, always there to lend a hand, or help someone in need. He was very dedicated to causes of youth and education, and promoting Texas history. He was a member of the Tejas Vaqueros-No Nombres Camp, a lifetime member of Coastal Conservation Association and a Lifetime Director of the Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo.
Jim was larger than life, a character some would say. He loved the Texas Gulf Coast and you could always find him wade fishing the flats in Port O'Connor or Aransas Pass. He was a comedian, always telling an off-color joke and putting a smile on someone's face or making them spit out their drink for that matter. He was an incredible storyteller, visionary and perfectionist. He loved all things Texas, music of all kinds, he loved preserving the ways of the old west and chuckwagon cooking. He loved entertaining and he definitely had his own brand of style. Mediocrity or giving up wasn't an option for him. Even through his illness he never gave up. He taught those ways to a lot of people including his children…."demand excellence of yourself." He was a proud man but quiet and not boastful and he never rested on his laurels. Jim Goode truly is a Texas Legend.
He is survived by his wife, Maria Cristina; his daughters, Jana Goode Reich and her husband Tex, Katie Goode & Emma Goode; and his son, Levi Goode and his wife Kelley. He is also survived and blessed by six grandchildren, Mason James Goode, Alexander James Sloan, Reese Lucille Goode, Megan Lee Sloan, Vivian Leigh Goode and James Hawkins Sloan. He is also survived by his brothers, John Goode, Joe Goode and sister Isabel Goode Deblanc. A special thanks goes out to Ann, Fernando, Eva, Berenice & Jocelyn who helped make his last days the best they could be. He will be truly missed, but his legend will never die.
Friends are cordially invited to a visitation with the family from five o'clock in the afternoon until seven o'clock in the evening on Wednesday, the 10th of February, in the library and grand foyer of Geo. H. Lewis & Sons, 1010 Bering Drive in Houston.
A funeral service and celebration of Jim's life is to be conducted at three o'clock in the afternoon on Thursday, the 11th of February, in the Jasek Chapel of Geo. H. Lewis & Sons.
Immediately following, all are invited to greet the family during a reception at a venue to be announced during the service.
In lieu of customary remembrances, the family requests with gratitude that memorial contributions in honor of Jim Goode be directed to the Cure Alzheimer's Fund, 34 Washington Street, Suite 200, Wellesley Hills, MA, 02481.

As a beginning graphic artist in 1975, Jim asked me to stop by to review my portfolio. His first day in the BBQ business on Kirby I stopped by again. "Best thing about this business", he said when I paid for my sandwich, "getting paid when the job is delivered". Advertising understood.

Jim was one of my professors at Texas Academy of Art. I later work for him occasionally in a little office in the Bellaire Theater shopping center. He was a larger than life character. With a big bushy beard, his black leather jacket, he would come riding up on his harley, just in time for class.

Although I didn't know Jim Goode well, I admired, respected, and loved him. The generosity of Jim and his wife was much appreciated by the West University Elementary Community- they hosted some spectacular outings to raise funds for the school! A quick story that tells a lot about the man- a close friend of mine was an outside salesman for an electrical manufacturer. One hot, muggy summer day he had a flat on the way to an important meeting with a potential customer. He was wearing his best suit and was standing by his car looking at the flat when a bearded gentleman pulled up behind him in a pickup truck and offered to fix his flat...which he did. After fixing the flat the stranger wished him well and introduced himself- Jim Goode. Your kindness and humility will be missed my friend.

Great funny memories of Jim when he worked as a designer and production artist for my Papa at 2338 Bissonnet (Culberson, Heller & Norton).

We are saddened to hear the news. We loved Jim Goode from the time he went to work for us as an advertising artist to the last time he cooked a meal for us at his country home. We're shocked at the news of Alzheimers and send our love and sympathy to the family.

Levi,
I grew up with your father in Lake Jackson, living 2 doors down from his house. I can't tell you all the stories in this short message, but I will tell you we had a lot of fun growing up together, getting into all kinds of mischief. Jimmy (his name to all his school friends)and I (also named Jimmy)learned to smoke, drink and chase the ladies together.
I am so sorry to hear he suffered from that dreaded disease that also took my mother.
I will always fondly remember those growing years and you can be sure he will be missed by all.

Dear Jana: I am so sorry to hear about your Dad. He left a wonderful legacy to his family, Houston and beyond. I have two of the wooden Pecan Pie boxes in our kitchen here in Philadelphia that remind me of Goode & Co. Take care and all my best. John

The food, the dedication to the ranching West, the small town feel of each of your enterprises, in a huge city like Houston.
The minute our daughter landed at IAH from college in California, we headed to Goode Co. BBQ. We have shipped pecan pies and brisket all over the USA, to friends and family. Thank you, Jim Goode. A tip of the hat to your legacy.

First met Jim when he was a graphic artist in Houston. When he decided to open the BBQ place he asked if my partner and I would take the photographs for the business. He informed us that he couldn't pay us but we could take it out in trade. I ate a good bit of "Goode Company" BBQ. I'd say we got the better part of the deal. You'll be missed Jim.

When I first moved to Houston in 1979, I didn't know anyone. I soon found Goode Company which was recommended by Walterine at O'Banions laundry. Soon, I was a regular, especially when Pappy played. I made lifelong friends; found my church and my place in this big old city. Thank you and God Bless your family and Texas! I thank my lucy stars for you! Dawn Dancy -Houston

Condolences to the Goode family. Jim leaves one helluva Texas sized legacy. I haven't lived in Houston for over 20 years but 25+ years Goode Co has been the benchmark I've judged all other BBQ joints. It's a staple for all our family events. Some of my fondest memories were watching Pappy and his Blue Ridge Playboys play at the Kirby location. Sad loss.

One night in the late 80's, I stopped at the Alabama Ice House and parked next to a very nice, late 40's green and black Ford Panel Truck. I got out and was looking the truck over and Jim was standing right there having a beer with a friend. I immediately started talking to him about the truck and how much I liked it. He asked me if I would like to take a ride with he and his friend to Kay's on Bissonette for a beer. I said SURE, and away we went. He had an unheard of mobile phone in the truck that was about as big as a box of Saltines. We went to Kay's, he bought me a beer, we enjoyed the crowd and of course, he knew about everybody there. Then we drove back to the AIH and I thanked him and never saw him again. But I will never forget what a friendly guy he was. Like Will Rogers, apparently, he never met a stranger. THAT is true TEXAN. Thank you for your genuine hospitality, Jim. That was a great gesture on your part.

my sincerest condolences to mr. goode's family & friends-my husband & i moved here from louisiana in 1990 to work in the medical center. i was 2 months pregnant at the time, & it seems that i "discovered" the ribs & jalapeno cheese bread pretty soon after!
i'm STILL amused at how often i will be at one of the restaurants(kirby/westpark)& come across a few tourists with their guidebook out, looking for one of the other 2, or overhear someone re-directing their lunch companions to the one that THEY are at.
you can be very proud of his legacy of innovation and hospitality-it's been a DELICIOUS 26 years!

I have "Goode" memories of Jim from the good 'old days of graphic design, wade-fishing Port O'Connor and oystering along the gulf coast. My late husband, Ben Kocian, and Jim were good friends, artists, and fishing buddies in the legendary Highway 35 Fishing Club. Sometimes I was lucky enough to be included in their crazy escapades. ( ...and sometimes I was even luckier not to be. -- laughing ) Jim was a unique, creative, talented man. He will always live in my memory ...and "Deep in the Heart of Texas." -- Cheri Gossett (Kocian)

It was 1977 and a graphic artist I knew was opening a BBQ restaurant. We were all encouraged to go and support Jim's endeavor. A restaurant was a big risk. Why leave a good design business. The rest is history. Goode BBQ is a legend and so was Jim Goode. I am so sorry for his family's loss. He will be missed.

My heartfelt sympathies go out to your family and friends during this difficult time. I hope that the promise found in 1 Thessalonians 4 : 14 can bring you some comfort. Knowing that there is a future for the ones we have lost in death can be so reassuring.

I went into Jim's place on Kirby when he was still cutting the beef himself back in the seventies. He had a sense of who and what you were just by looking at ya.

Had the ZZ Top thing down before they wrote the song.

Always has a good nod for you and remembered you whenever we met. Did pull him over on Kirby to tell him about his taillight one time.

Brought the down home real country trueness to what he did that clearly meant more than money.

My wife and I were talking this morning about Goode Company BBQ and how Jim Goode made people happy with his food.

I did not know Jim personally. I knew him through his food which made so many of us a little bit happier as we struggle day-to-day putting one foot in front of the other.

For me it is simple:

I may be having a bad day. If I ate at Goode Company, my day may still be bad -- but it would not be as bad.

His BBQ is so dang good it helps put things in perspective -- at least for me. Goode Company BBQ is one of life's simple pleasures and treasures. The place just makes you feel good, feel comfortable, feel welcome and at least for awhile, feel like everything is going to be okay.

Cause and effect? Meaning of life? The secret? I don't know. But strangely after sliced beef on a bun with pickles and onions and a generous wedge of pecan pie at Goode Company BBQ, my day always seemed to get better.

We'll miss you, Jim.

Godspeed, brother!

Mr. Goode lived next door to my mom when they were in grade school in Clute. We evacuated from the Brazosport area to Houston for Hurricane Alicia (maybe not the best plan), and we stayed with my uncle's family in Southhampton.

We went to Goode & Co. for dinner the evening before the storm hit and sat outside eating and talking with Mr. Goode, he and my mom catching up after years.

We watched the first winds of Alicia start to blow in right there on Kirby at his place. He was very calm about the whole thing.

Rest well, Mr. Goode. You left a big mark on the Houston area.

"Why" is the question we need to ask. But regardless the response, it begs for another, "why?" Until you ask it about a man like Jim:

WHY WAS THAT MAN?

He was the condensed mass
at the center of his larger, unseen Spirit.

The mass, as must, dissolved.
But the Spirit remains to touch our souls,
and provoke the questions of our existence:

Have you been a better person for having known him?

Will you be a better person no longer knowing him?

The answer to the first is the reason
that justified his existence,
and your tears for his passing.

The latter is your challenge
to justify your existence,
and the sorrow you feel.

Feel that sorrow for yourself.
But, feel joy for him.
He is no longer in pain.

Don't deny him the value of his existence.
Don't deny, don't run from your pain.

Find out the cause, and resolve the unanswerable question:

WHY?
