JOHN FRANCESE Obituary

JOHN M. FRANCESE, a former senior executive with Gulf Oil and the Uniroyal Corporation died Monday September 28, in Houston, Texas from complications resulting from a stroke. He was 88 years old.John was born in Jeannette, Pennsylvania and later moved to Houston, Texas. He grew up in a strong Italian family where at an early age dropped out of school to help his mother raise their family while his father was ill. He was a believer in the American dream and represented it well throughout his life. He believed with persistence, dedication, and enthusiasm you can overcome all odds. From working in the glass factory, welding in the foundry, being aboard the US Navy LST 494 and landing at Omaha Beach during WW II, there were no hurdles in life that deterred him from taking on a challenge, striving for success and providing for his family. He attended night school at the University of Pittsburgh and rose to the level of Vice President at both Gulf Oil and Uniroyal Tire. Although successful in business, his first love was for his wife Mary, "Maria Nicole" and his family. He and Mary raised their four sons teaching "Family First", strong Catholic beliefs and compassion for others. His leadership qualities inspired all who knew him. He had many sayings that will remain with us forever,: " La Dolce Vita," "Nothing great was ever achieved without enthusiasm," and "Never bet against the Steelers or Notre Dame."John's achievements include receiving medals of commendation during WW II for landings at Normandy and in the Pacific theatre including the 60th landing anniversary medal of commendation awarded by France, and Knights of Columbus 4th Degree.John is preceded in death by his parents, Alfred and Cristina and two brothers Sam and Louie. He survived by his wife Mary of 63 years; his brother Joseph and sister Mary; his sons Jerry, Tom and wife Ann, Mike and wife Diane, and "Buddy" John Maurice Jr., and wife Patti. He has also been blessed with seven grandchildren, Christina, Renee, Claire, Ann Marie, Michael Jr., Blake, Nicole and one great grandson, Davis W. Thompson.Visitation begins at 5 pm, Thursday, October 1, 2009 and Rosary at 7 pm. in the Chapel of Miller Funeral Services, 7723 Beechnut. Funeral Mass will be 11:00 am, Friday, October 2, 2009 at St. John Vianney Catholic Church, 625 Nottingham Oaks Trail, Houston, Texas 77079.Donations can me made on behalf of the family to St. Francis de Sales School, 8100 Roos Road, Houston, Texas 77036.

Dear Mrs. Francese and Family,

I was very saddened to hear about Mr. Franeces leaving us and passing on to the Heavenly World.

I'm very glad to have known him and have fun and happy memories and feelings of him as we grew up at St Francis de Sales, in the band, Buddy & Robert...quick wit, upbeat...same things that will live on with his boys and their families.

Please accept my apology for not contacting you sooner.

Mrs. Francese, hope you are doing well. And will come visit you soon.

A Hug to you and your Family,
Emil Ottis

Dear Mary and Family,

I will always remember Johnny with great affection. I still can remember him telling me when I was a very young girl that he was going to marry me when I grew up. I remember how he loved to laugh and how great he and Uncle Mike were together.
Dan and I send our prayers to you and your family.
Love, Marie

I have many fond memories of living next door to the Francese family: Bocci Ball tournaments in our front yards, Christmas sing-a-longs (nobody can sing Deck the Halls like the Francese boys!), our dads taking out the posts of our shared backyard fence to celebrate the Fourth of July, and of course Rockport! I remember a particular Fourth of July get-together when Mr. Francese & I played "Old Suzanna" on our harmonicas. I'm so happy I was able to share in the celebration today, and to see the Francese family after all this time.

May your hearts soon be filled with wonderful memories of joyful times together as you celebrate a life well lived.

I first met John in the 90's. He was standing outside St. Francis De Sales church recruiting members for the K of C. The twinkle in his eye and his warmth and charm was infectious, so of course I accepted the invitation to join. A truly great man and a fine example to us all. He will be missed. Sincerely, Bill St.Cyr

Mary and family,
Please accept our deepest sympathies and thoughts on the loss of your loved one. We have many fond memories of John throughout the years. Alot of our bike rides would include stopping by the old swimming hole for a dip in John's pool. We know your hearts will be filled with wonderful memories of joyful times together as you celebrate a life well lived. May God bless you and family in this time of sorrow.

My kids and I have been praying for you all since we heard the news. I just wanted to share my most recent memory of your dad, which was many years ago. I was holding one of my daughters, who was a toddler at the time. Your Dad was standing next to us. I started singing "Mary Had A Little Lamb". When I reached the 4th verse "Mary had a little lamb...." your Dad quickly interjected his version of the final line, "With a butt like a big fat ham!" It took me off guard and my daughter didn't quite understand the humor, but we get a good laugh from it now..... I know he will be greatly missed! Your family made a big impression on us all growing up, (we thought you were a wild bunch!) but we appreciated your humor and liveliness. It is clear that your Dad taught you how to enjoy life, and that is such a gift!

"Our thoughts and prayers go out to John and the entire Francese family and especially to his son Jerry who we have known for 20+ years and is one of the most honorable, kind and decent men I have known in my life. The kind of soul Jerry exibits could only come from life under a good and honorable Father. I only wish we had known John."

My Uncle Johnny was a marvelous man. He always reminded me of Gene Kelly in “Singing in the Rain” 1952 movie. To me he looked like Gene Kelly and always had a joyous attitude and personality. I loved him like my father. In fact he was my substitute father when Dad was gone to sea. I remember spending summers with him, Aunt Mary and the boys. My cousins were like brothers to me, since I was an only child. They always included me in their fun from tad pole to lighting bug hunting or sliding off a snowy hill on a torn old box. Uncle Johnny was the man who kept guard in the basement while I took a shower. With patience he taught me how to fish off a pier, bait my hook and skin the fish. He would tell tales of the Indian, Falling Rock, as we drove to Pennsylvania from Norfolk, VA. He was a marvelous father and uncle to me. I am so very privilege to share his birthday. I will miss him deeply and love him always.
Goodbye sweet uncle till we meet again.

We enjoyed the whole Francese family for 20 years when we all lived on Langdon. Although none of the boys chose any of our girls to walk down the aisle with,we really enjoyed those
friendly neighbors. John and Ralph can
now talk about the OLD times.

My wife Myrna and I began to miss John more than two years ago when his deteriorating health forced him to move from his home across the street to the Parkway Plaza long term health care facility. Still, that was only around the corner and we would see him on visits there or when the boys would bring John back to the neighborhood. While his body was betraying him, he never lost that sparkle in his eyes or even that sharp tongue of which I was so fond. John was a needler and he could give as well as he could get. Besides those early days when we played golf, our friendship was based on shared experiences including the armed services, the automotive field and our roots in Pennsylvania. He found a way to spite me; he kept nominating me for the presidency of our homeowners association. It’s a thankless job and he knew it. But that’s why we loved him. Along with his wife Mary, we could never have hoped to be blessed with such great neighbors. They added to the quality of life here in Charlton Park and he leaves in body but not in spirit. And in his great family, he leaves a lasting legacy that will endure for many many decades. In that he was singularly blessed. Now, he is at rest, having completed his journey on this mortal coil. He’s more than earned his peace. We will miss you, John Francese. For sure! Stan and Myrna Rodman
