windswept pines blow in the distance... hunters moon cascades down…she embraces me with a cool breeze…fully under her gaze…she runs her cold fingers through my hair…she whispers…silently lying, jet black eyes open, dark… deep… simply existing… in presence…in being….. I am home now…..

To Mycheal, Davey and Nicole,

Your dad referred to me as his "Favorite Cheerleader"!! I am sooo glad I opted to go to Frankfort the week before Homecoming in '08 to see your father honored. I will cherish the time I spent with him there and also at the basketball game when I got to see you. Your father was a wonderful person who I had the pleasure of knowing. God is good and I thank Him for allowing Coach Mithell to cross my path. Cheering for Kentucky State, 1967-1971, was so special with your father as the coach. You have my deepest sympathy and may God continue to bless and keep you in His care. Remember John 3:16, "For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life." He is only away.

I am grieved over the fact that one of my best friends has crossed the bar. Coach was a great man and influenced a lot of people. He will truly be missed. I am just sorry that I did not have a chance to bid him farewell. "Let the work he's done, speak for him." I am going to miss you.

Peace my heart…

Peace, my heart, let the time for the parting be sweet.
Let it not be a death but completeness.
Let love melt into memory and pain into songs.
Let the flight through the sky end in the folding of the wings over the nest.
Let the last touch of your hands be gentle like the flower of the night.
Stand still, O Beautiful End, for a moment, and say your last words in silence.
I bow to you and hold up my lamp to light you on your way.

You will be greatly missed. Your friend from Norfolk State University

Weep Not ….

Weep not, my loved one, for me
For it was God who came to set me free
Just the other day, He called my name
And very soon, the Angel came.
They brought the chariot, can’t you see,
Now I have a home in the land of the free
Why weep, mourn or cry?
We will meet in the sweet by and by.
Down there, I have done my best
Now God has a place for me …..
Where I have found Eternal Rest.

Coach Mitchell had a proud impact on my life! He was my junior varsity basketball coach at Jackson State, and I grew very close to him during my years at the institution. My last contact with "coach" was at his home in Virgina Beach, Virginia, a few years ago. I am glad we had a chance to visit before his passing. He was an outstanding coach and a fine human being. Surely, all of his players and friends will miss him. Jimmie Lewis Franklin (Ph.D.)

To the bereaved family and friends of the much-beloved Coach Lucias T. Mitchell, words cannot express the heart-felt sorrow that encompasses me after reading in the Montgomery Advertiser about his passing. He positively impacted so many people by being a great Coach, mentor, and leader that not only cared about the game of basketball, but deeply cared about the total development of the person.I was a fortunate recipient of these values when I played basketball for him (ASU 1966-68). He was the epitome of Professionalism. My heart-felt sympathy goes out to the family and friends.May the sweet communion of the Holy Spirit rest, rule, and abide in each and everyone of you.

Coach Mitchell was my coach my freshman year at Jackson State in 1960. I enjoyed playing for him because he was not only a coach, but a father figure and friend as well. For the next three years(1961-63)he taught me how to be a good man and leader.

God Bless his family, you will always be in my prayers!

To the family members of the GREAT COACH LUCIAS T. MITCHELL:
I met Coach Mitchell at JSU as he coached my husband on the basketball team. He is one of the nicest men I have met. He remained the same through all the years I have known him. I saw him at KSU Homecoming every year in Frankfort, KY. It was always a pleasure to see that great smile and converse with him. We will always remember him for the genuine friend that he was. Please know that he made a positive and everlasting impression on and in many, many lives. Let those memories strengthen you during the present and future. God Bless all of you!

My husband and I were in school at KSU from 1968-1972. It was a great time! Championship basketball was a big part of it. Coach Mitchell brought so much inspiration to us as students and probably changed and revolutionized the lives of his players. We all respected and looked up to him. I share your loss and will continue to pray for God's peace and comfort at this time.

I have lost my best friend of 40 years. Coach Mitchell tpook me under his wing in Janurary of 1970 when I was just a student and became not just my best friend but my mentor, he was a part of my Family and a Father figure to me. Coach Mitchell always told you what he thought up front. He never said one thing to you and then another behind your back. It wasn't always what you wanted to hear, but for those of us who listened to his wisdom, we now know he knew what he was talking about. How many of us have been lucky enough to have someone to turn to for directipon for 40 years and knowing we can say anything to him without being judged. I will miss him so much and so will my wife GingerBug whose cooking he so loved.
