Sarah Patrick Obituary

SARAH LEE RAINES PATRICK was born June 4, 1932 in Memphis, Tennessee, while her family was on vacation. She was one of eight children. Her life long nick name "Dippy" came from her daddy because she dipped her head as she rocked in a rocking chair. She was raised in Columbus, Georgia and attended Columbus High School. She attended Huntington College in Montgomery, Alabama as an art major. This is where she would meet the love of her life and husband Col. (Ret.) Charles (Pat) W. Patrick. They eloped after playing golf one Sunday afternoon and were married for 54 years. Pat was in the Air Force for 30 years, so she made her career as a military wife and mother. She would leave a little bit of herself at each base they were stationed because of volunteering and sharing of her many talents. She worked as a decorator for Sears, Roebuck and Co. and also as a florist's designer. She was a long time member of the Champlain Valley Toastmistress Club and held all offices in the club. She held many offices in the Officers' Wives Club throughout her life. She worked at various bases in thrift shops and as a Red Cross volunteer. She volunteered as a counselor on public speaking and art for the local Boy Scouts. Sarah was a member of the United Daughters of the Confederacy. She served as a docent for the historical society in Savannah, Georgia. She opened her own successful business in Savannah, Georgia with various artists featured in the shop. She was one of the first to have an adoption agency for Xavier Roberts, who designed the original Cabbage Patch Dolls. Later, she opened an additional business in Pearland, Texas. Sarah was a member of Skidaway Island United Methodist Church. She was an avid golfer. When she was not on the golf course or on the dance floor, Sarah's other hobbies included crafts, sewing, gardening, writing poetry, refinishing furniture, bowling, bridge, interior designing, decorating homes for the Christmas holidays, and painting murals for businesses and homes. She had a special love for animals. She rescued many in her lifetime and fought many crusades to save them. Sarah went home peacefully to be with her heavenly Father on Thursday, April 30, 2009 from a long, courageous battle with Alzheimer's. Sarah is preceded in death by husband Col. (Ret.) Charles W. Patrick, son Lorin D. Patrick; her parents Lorin D. Raines, Sr. and Phie M. Raines; brothers Lorin D. Raines Jr., Charles W. Raines, Phil V. Raines; sisters Marian R. Bellows, Patricia R. Rhodes and Virginia Sue Raines. She is survived by son, Charles W. Patrick Jr. and wife Kitty of Atlanta, Georgia; daughter Stephanie and husband Ritchey Faulk of Katy, Texas; grandchildren, who were the light of her life, Jennifer Patrick and Erin Calhoun, Randy and Andrew Faulk; great grandson Corbin Calhoun; sister Sandra R. Plant of Moultrie, Georgia and many nieces and nephews. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Research at Baylor College of Medicine, 1 Baylor Plaza MS: BCM 160, Houston, Texas 77030. A memorial service will be held Monday, May 11th, 3:30 pm at the chapel at Parkway Place 1321 Park Bayou Drive in Houston, Texas with Rev. Arnie Peterson officiating. A reception will follow at Parkway Place. Interment will be at Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia on July 20th at 3:00 pm. Sarah Lee "Dippy" Patrick will be remembered as a hard working, determined, kind, caring and loving wife, mother and grandmother, sister and friend. Knowing that God's grace has her dancing with her beloved husband and at peace will always comfort us.
