Our families lived one street apart in Spring Branch and there were lots of pick-up baseball games in the neighborhood. Jimmy was a great sportsman and a great competitor. As often is the case, we went our separate ways after high school, but I'll always remember the happy go lucky boy in the 60's.

Jim and Carolyn were some of my parents' best friends. I grew up with the Spillanes coming over for Campbell happy hours when I was a small child and all of them having drinks together before they went "kicker" dancing. My family spent many hours in their pools during parties and I know their house was a refuge for my mom when my dad was deep into tax season. Even when I was in college, I would hear of their Friday nights at Campioni's and be happy that they were all enjoying their time together. Although I haven't seen the Spillanes much in my adult years, especially since my mom passed away 13 years ago, I will miss Jim so much because he was a huge part of my life.

Heaven just got a lot more orange! My Uncle Jim told the most amazing stories, about his time at UT (like taking Farrah Fawcett on a date), about building homes for celebrities, and about golf courses around the world. Telling jokes was an art form - he even had jokes about telling jokes! His love for the Texas Longhorns was lifelong and inspiring. He always indulged me and encouraged me as an athlete and in my real estate career. Who will hop in the car with me and drive around to look at houses on Christmas Day as we did multiple years?!?! I still have your home plans book you gave me, and hope to use it someday.
Uncle Jim, I miss you already!
Much Love, Mary Carolyn Gatzke
