John W. Clark, Jr.
1936-2017
John W. Clark, Jr., was born on December 24, 1936, in Rochester, New York, a first child and Christmas gift to his parents, John W. Clark, Sr. and Dorothy Springett Clark. He died on August 6, 2017, in Houston, Texas, having served as a Professor at Rice University for 49 years.
Dr. Clark grew up in Rochester, and after graduation from Brighton High School, served in the U.S. Marine Corps for three years. During those years, he met and married his wife of 61 years, Betty Stovall (Kit) Clark, in Memphis, Tennessee, who survives him. He returned to Memphis on discharge from the military, graduating with honors from Christian Brothers University, and enriched by the presence of his four children, John W. Clark III, of Houston, Nan Ellen Clark Stout, of Sugar Land, Adrienne Anne Clark Iles, of Rockport, and Michael Christian Clark, of Houston.
Because of his performance as an undergraduate, he was awarded a Ford Foundation Fellowship to attend the Case Institute of Technology, in Cleveland, Ohio, receiving a Master's Degree in Electrical Engineering, followed by a Ph.D. from Case Western Reserve University, a consolidation of Case Tech and Western Reserve. It was there he began his teaching career in the cradle of a new field of science, becoming known as Bioengineering, that was fast developing.
In 1968 the family moved to Houston, where Dr. Clark at the time of his death held professorships in both the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department, and also the Bioengineering Department which he was instrumental in establishing at Rice some years later. His work at the University, the Medical Center in Houston, and elsewhere around the globe, made his life a song, giving him an extraordinary joy. It took him and his family all over the world, including a sabbatical year in Germany in 1975-76; a summer in Lyon, France in 2000; several summers during the 80's in Banff, Alberta; Christmases in Vienna; and numberless other excursions and trips to places far and near. His life was rich and full, and all who knew and loved him will miss him.
Dr. Clark was a Life Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) for contributions to modeling in electrophysiology and cardiopulmonary systems, and was cited as one of the leaders in bioengineering in the Houston area. He served as President of the international IEEE Society for Engineering in Medicine and Biology (EMBS) and held several offices in that Society. He was a founding fellow of the Biomedical Engineering Society (BMES), and served on its Governing Board. In 1993, he was inducted as a Founding Fellow in the American Institute of Medical and Biological Engineering (AIMBE) in a ceremony at the National Academy of Sciences, Washington, D.C. Early in his career he was named an Alexander von Humboldt Foundation Fellow, and spent a year with his family as a guest of the German government at the University of Karlsruhe. In 2009, he received the IEEE/Engineering in Medicine and Biology Service Award for outstanding service and contributions to the EMB Society and a meritorious career in biomedical engineering education. He counted as one of his favorite accomplishments the founding of the Houston Society for Engineering in Medicine and Biology (HSEMB), which met annually at the Hilton Hotel at the University of Houston, and was intended to encourage young scientists in Houston and surrounding regions.
In addition to his four children, Dr. Clark is survived by eight grandchildren: Kristin Stout Edwards and John Wesley Stout, Francis Clark, Wyatt and Arliss Iles, and Joshua, Benjamin and Sophie Clark. He also leaves two great-grandchildren, Wesley and Nathan Edwards. Miss Wesley is seven years old, and Nathan is three.
Dr. Clark was a devout Roman Catholic, appearing at 10:30 every Sunday morning for mass at the Chapel of St. Basil, where he enjoyed the companionship of many friends, including the priests who have served there through the years.
A funeral mass will be celebrated for Dr. Clark at half past three o'clock in the afternoon, on Thursday, August 10, 2017, in the Chapel of St. Basil, followed by a reception in the Link Lee Mansion. Both the Chapel and the Mansion are located on the campus of The University of St. Thomas, at the intersection of Montrose and Westheimer in Houston.
In lieu of traditional remembrances, the family requests that a contribution in Dr. Clark's name be made to the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, to foster the next generation of outstanding young researchers. The address is American Friends of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, 1101 17th Street NW, Suite 603, Washington, DC 20036, or online at https://www.paypal.com/donate/?token=MdnxBbuX5lYHXGmRHhMsvCFqG4hxSCWYtPuE-Z-UC8WuupDjg9B8NvE8uYl8V9WHCSMAHG&country.x=US&locale.x=US.

About 1973 I was waiting in the lunch line at a Biomedical Engineering conference and met John Clark. Lunch with others yielded a plan. We met that evening and argued for 2 hours to decide the chapter titles for a new book on Medical instrumentation. We each picked a chapter we wanted to write, then went home. John picked "The origin of biopotentials" and contributed to the most used text "Medical instrumentation application and design" now in its 4th edition. John, your contribution will be read by thousands for many years to come! We will be thinking of you.

Dear Kit,
John and you were mentors to me when I was at Rice in the 80s as the Master in resident at Sid Rich. As an engineering student I appreciated John's advice and his pioneering work in the field of Bio Engineering was a great inspiration to me. I will be praying for you and the rest of your family, that the Lord will be near to you at this time of loss. As someone else has posted, I believe John is simply passing on to another realm where there is no more pain or suffering and we will get to see him again in a much brighter day.
With Love,

When I lived in Sid Rich, there were many of nights that I would be coming in from a road trip or basketball practice and Dr. Clark would want to know how my day went. The Clark's were quite visible as our master family and were influential to so many.
Thank you for caring.

When I was the "New Bride" in the Clark family, Jack was the first to so lovingly welcome me. That's why I lovingly called him "DAD" from that day forward.

For the past 15 years he has loved and encouraged me. I miss everything about him and wish he didn't have to leave so soon. I'll forever miss visiting him and going to church with him. He was such a presence at the church, that now when I go, it seems so empty. I can't help but look for him on the first row.
I thank him for all of the years of love, advice, and words of hope. He was truly like a father to me.

Dad, i will always love you and you're forever in my heart. You'll always be a part of my life. Love Brenda Clark

The scientific world lost a true pioneer, and I lost my father. We had to share him with the scientific world and so many sacrifices had to be made, but we always knew his love. My father was brilliant in so many ways. How he balanced and completed everything is a miracle within it's self.

The Rice Uniersity class rooms and labs will miss his voice. His wife's living room will miss his smiles. His children will miss his humor, and his church will miss his participation.

As for my father, I know he's now happily getting all of his mathematical questions answered.

I also know that his legacy will live on. It will live on in the sparkle of the eyes of his great grand children. It will live on in the memories his children hold dear. It will live on in the advancements of his research. And it will live on in my heart.

My Dad's oldest brother, John W. Clark II, has always been "Uncle Jack" to me. I have some very fond memories of him. Our family visit to his house in Houston in 1971. He opened his house to us for three weeks. He visited us with his family in 1975 before he spent a year in Germany teaching. We visited him and his family in Germany for about 3 weeks in that year. And again on their return trip. There have always been some great stories Dad recalled about Jack in their childhood years, and early adulthood years. The thing about visits with his family, you were always assured of coming away with some great stories. Probably my favorite memory of him was our trip to Tennessee. We hadn't seen him in quite some time at that point, and I was a new father (my son Christopher had just turned 1yr old). We were playing a family favorite game called Guestures. Jack had never played this game before, and was at first very noncommittal. After seeing how much fun everyone was having, he decided to join in. I must say, the "fun kid" in Jack Clark came out that day, and had an absolute ball. He was laughing so hard, and had everyone else laughing so hard, that anyone there will never forget.
Our love and prayers go out to Uncle Jack, all of his family, and his many friends. Jack spent his life preparing to meet his Lord & Savior - that has now been realized. And while he will be so sadly missed, there are so many memories of this man that can only bring a smile to the face of those who knew and loved him.
All Our Love,

Sam Friedman

Dr. Clark was probably the main reason I came to study at Rice University. I was seeking a program in Bioengineering and his was one of the few at that time. And it was certainly one of the best. Much of what I've acheived professionally, I owe to him. He was always available to answer questions, and gave me incredible guidance, both in his field, and for my eventual career in medicine. I'm most honored to have been one of his many students.

May he rest in peace.

Dear Kit and Family,
I first met John in 2003 at the annual IEEE EMBC meeting and was immediately impressed with his enthusiasm and passion for the research in the field of cardiology / physiology. He was the one who first inspired / championed the empowerment of the technical committees to govern and assume leadership roles in EMBS. It was his voice that we still heard as we move closer to accomplishing this transition today.

It was simply a pleasure to converse with him and leave with renewed energy to move forward. I will miss this most.

Please accept my condolences with heartfelt sorry for your loss.

Warmly,
Andrew Laine

Dear Kit and family,

My deepest sympathies to you all on John's passing. As a fellow cardio-respiratory system modeler, I am greatly saddened I have lost a great mentor, colleague and friend. He was the one who encouraged me to become active in the IEEE EMBS and its Technical Committee on Cardiopulmonary Systems. And I used to look forward to our conversations when he came to LA yearly for a period of time as a member of our NIH center advisory board - my colleagues and I always valued his sage advice and input. We will miss him dearly. The bioengineering community has lost an icon.

Best wishes,
Michael Khoo
