It is still hard to believe a great young man has left us! Every time I pass by the apartments where he resided I think of him, every time I see a truck like the one he drove and the time he passed me on the freeway trying to get to his job I think about him.....there's more to that story. Jonathon is missed and never forgotten.
Thank you Lord for your creation!!!!

August 11, 2012

On this day that would have been his 26th birthday, I think of the poem that I wrote for him on his 10th birthday. It started out..."Ten years from now, I hope to see the man that you grow up to be. Brave, loyal, strong and true - all these things I see in you."

From the day we found out that Lori was expecting him, I knew that Jonathon was a gift from God. And I am so grateful to God for choosing us for Jonathon and allowing us to share him with the world.

I know it's hard for his friends to keep in touch with us because it hurts to be reminded of such a huge loss in their lives, but please know that we understand and love you.

I found a poem written over 80 years ago by Edgar Albert Guest, who so eloquently says what I have always believed about the miracle of having a child - that they are a gift from God that we should not take lightly.

"I will lend you, for a little time,
A child of mine, He said.
For you to love the while he lives,
And mourn for when he's dead.

It may be six or seven years,
Or twenty-two or three.
But will you, till I call him back,
Take care of him for Me?

He'll bring his charms to gladden you,
And should his stay be brief.
You'll have his lovely memories,
As solace for your grief.

I cannot promise he will stay,
Since all from earth return.
But there are lessons taught down there,
I want this child to learn.

I've looked the wide world over,
In search for teachers true.
And from the throngs that crowd life's lanes,
I have selected you.

Now will you give him all your love,
Nor think the labour vain,
Nor hate me when I come
To take him home again?

I fancied that I heard them say,
'Dear Lord, Thy will be done!'
For all the joys Thy child shall bring,
The risk of grief we'll run.

We'll shelter him with tenderness,
We'll love him while we may,
And for the happiness we've known,
Forever grateful stay.

But should the angels call for him,
Much sooner than we've planned.
We'll brave the bitter grief that comes,
And try to understand."
(written by Edgar Albert Guest)

As much as this poem expresses my feelings, I must add, that I think Jonathon was "loaned" to us in order for us to learn lessons from him, rather than he learn from us.

As strongly as I believe this, I also believe that we will see Jonathon again someday, each in our own time, when we have learned all God's lessons. It just turned out that Jonathon was a quick learner.

Wow BIG J it has been a year and a day and from one friend to another you are truly missed. Sorry it took a day for me to write but I'm still at a loss for words. So Rest easy my friend...

June 20, 2012

My sweet precious Jonathon, I can't believe it's already been a year and it seems like only yesterday. I miss you so very much...I miss our arguments over who's better at Scrabble, our discussions about politics and the President, you nagging me about getting an iPhone and enabling text messaging, your taste in music and how you thought my taste was awful, your love for basketball and you always talking about LeBron James… I miss everything baby, EVERYTHING. You are my every thought, all day long and I often find it hard to breathe. Life will never be the same, this hole in my heart will never be filled. I am so proud of you. I love you so very much and I can't wait until I see you again.

I love you,
Mom

My dear sweet nephew, there isn't a day that goes by that I don't think of you. Every single day or night, I look up at the sky and wonder if you are watching; if you can hear me. You are the most perfect embodiment of the ideal human being that I've ever known; smart, funny, fun, and loving. I just want you to know that I will love and ache for you until my dying breath. Giving birth to your new cousin a week before your death has been such a conflicting emotion for me. To receive a gift from God and then to have one taken within a week is so overwhelming. But, I thank God for giving Gabriel to us when he did, because the alternative would have been unbearable. I love you so much and look forward to the day that I can see you again.

November 24, 2011

This was the first Thanksgiving in 25 years that I had to spend without you. It was tough, but I know you were there with me. I can feel your presence my beautiful child, and I know that you are with us, every day. The Holidays will never be the same but I am so thankful for the short 25 years I got to spend them with you. I love you so much and will miss you every day for the rest of my life, until I see you again.

I love you,
Mom

August 11, 2011

Today you would have turned 25. It seems like yesterday when I wrote a poem for you on your 10th birthday, saying that "Ten years from now, I hope to see the man that you grow up to be." I was blessed to have seen and known the man you grew up to be. I could not have been more proud of you. Thank you for sharing your life with me and for giving me a precious granddaughter who loves you as much as we do. I know you are watching over us and I can't wait to get another bear hug from you and hear you say, "I love you, too, Grandma."

July 28, 2011

The Lord is my sword, my rock, and my shield. He makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me to the peaceful waters of life. He shows me the right way to live. He restores, he comforts, and he claims my soul. He feeds me with food from his word while in the presence of my enemies. He lifts me high and lets them know that I am untouchable because I am his. My life overflows with joy and peace. Even though I will face the chilly hand of death I will fear nothing because I am his. Surely goodness and mercy will follow me all the days here on earth and when it comes time for me to depart this life I will dwell in his loving arms forever.......I will finally be home.

Jonathon isn't gone. He merely made it home before we did. I'll see you in heaven brother.

Be Still

Be still like the grass on a melancholy summer day
Be still like desert shrub.

Be calm and you will hear your loved one speak, in the stillness, in the calm, their love resounds.

If you are still this promise I make, you will hear the voice of your loved one helping you along your way.

I will always remember that little boy with the big smile and laugh. He never said goodbye without giving you the biggest hug and telling you he loved you! I spent a lot of time with him when he was little but not as much as I would have liked as we both got older and moved on with our own lives. But I know he loved his family with all his heart and soul. And had told me how he wanted me to meet his wife, Ashlee, and how amazing she is. Everyone who knew Jonathon loved him...he was irresistable. He will be missed on this earth SO much but I will not say goodbye because I know I will see him again.... He's always in our hearts. I love you baby cousin!!

June 23, 2011

There's just something about your first grandchild - It's not that you love him more than your other precious grandchilddren, it's just that you have more time to love him.

I've read everyone's messages and am not surprised that they almost duplicate the words I wrote days ago to share with all at the service on Saturday:

"God shared one of his most precious angels with us for a short time, to show us how we should love and treat each other while we are here on earth. God must have missed him very much to take him back so soon.

Everyone Jonathon met was drawn to his robust spirit.

There is not one kind word in Webster’s Dictionary that could not apply to Jonathon. He was loving, thoughtful, respectful, honest, generous, and a hard worker – attributes that came naturally to him because of his upbringing. His word was as strong as any written contract.

He always put family first, never missing an opportunity to let us know how much he loved us. But, basketball was a close second. He loved that game from the time he could hold a basketball. He was competitive, but fair, and earned the respect of everyone who knew him.

He loved his wife, Ashlee, even years before they married and was faithful to her every day in every way. I will never forget the look of pride and love on his face as he watched his beautiful bride walk down the aisle, and that same look on his face each time he was near her. They were looking forward to starting a family, and anyone who observed Jonathon with his cousins, nieces and nephews knows that he would have been a great father, teacher and coach.

He loved and honored his father, mother, grandparents, great-grandparents, aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, and of course his friends – too many people to list.

He loved his friends in a way that they felt more like family than just friends.

He loved life and lived it to the fullest every day, and took the time to share it with those he cared about.

Jonathon was a little opinionated about some things, but not judgmental. He just could not understand why anyone could not enjoy a good steak or seafood.

We each have so many wonderful memories, special to each of us. Some of mine consist of – when he’d spend the night and we’d play card games and he’d make me laugh with his witty sense of humor even at a young age; the honor I felt when he asked me to speak to his class on Career Day; when we worked on a school project together and how proud he was when he got an A; when he, Daniel, Bradley and I took a ski trip to Breckenridge for his high school graduation gift, and we played Monopoly and he wouldn’t even let ME cheat; when he tried to talk me into jumping out of an airplane after he had gone skydiving; and how he raved about my candied pecans – saying that they were his favorite thing and pretending that he would not share them with Ashlee – so many wonderful memories spanning such a short lifetime.

If I had to pick one thing that Jonathon would want us to remember, it would be to never pass up an opportunity to spend time with people you love, and always show them how much they mean to you.

I take some comfort in imagining him now playing basketball in Heaven with his Dad and his best friend Elisha, and knowing that we will all be there someday to cheer him on again."

I can hardly wait to see you again and feel your loving bear hug.

I didn't know Jonathon for very long, but long enough so he was just like one of my own sons. He had such a winning personality, and a good heart, and everything going right in his life. It's so hard to understand why GOD calls the good ones home so early in life, but I guess his plan for Jonathon will be revealed to us when we see him on the other side. You will be missed by all that knew you Jonathon. My prayers are with his wife and family that GOD will send comfort as only he can.

Lori & Family, I am so incredibly sad for your loss. I see Jonathon's picture and am moved by the kind words that his friends and family have written here in his guest book, and I can see that the same kindness is in his eyes. What a handsome young man. Many people are praying for your healing.
