Woodrow "Woody" H. Smithers Jr. passed away peacefully on Wednesday, August 27, with his
loving wife Sarah and son Wayne by his side. Woody was born in Houston on May 15, 1956 to
Woodrow and Maudie Smithers. He graduated from C.E. King High School in 1974.
Woody's life was built on love, loyalty, and laughter. Family was always his greatest priority, and
he cherished every minute spent with those he loved. He was especially proud of his
granddaughters, Addison and Kensley. Whether at games, competitions, or special events,
Woody could always be found cheering them on with pride and joy.
Woody's work ethic and dedication were evident in his 48 years of service at Lyondell as an
operator, supervisor, shift superintendent, and emergency response chief. There he not only
built a respected career but also formed countless friendships and memories that he treasured.
Known for his friendly spirit, it seemed everywhere Woody went he ran into someone he knew,
a testament to the many lives he touched.
Woody was a life-long volunteer in many of his son's and granddaughter's activities. He would
be the first one to jump in and lend a helping hand.
He and his wife, Sarah, shared a love for travel and adventure. Together they found joy in setting
sail on cruises and relaxing with their feet in the sand, their favorite place to be.
Woody was preceded by his parents, Woodrow and Maudie Smithers, and his brother-in-law,
Jimmy Traylor.
He is survived by his son Wayne Smithers and daughter-in-law Katie Smithers, and his beloved
granddaughters, Addison and Kensley Smithers. He is also survived by his brothers Jesse and Joe
Smithers, his sister Pamela Meekins and brother-in-law Burl Meekins, as well as a large, loving
extended family: Ronnie and Nora Smith, Glen and Phyllis Gordon, JoAnn Traylor, Rusty Traylor,
Gayle and Kristopher Nelson, Jennifer Traylor and Christopher Lambert, Scott and DeAnn Smith,
Justin Smith, Josh Smith, Jenna Smith, Jennifer Queen and David Adams, Forrest and Miranda
Land, Amber Queen, Shelby Queen, Logan Queen, Charles Queen, Astrid Land, and Josh
Arbones.
Woody's legacy will live on in the love he gave, the laughter he shared, and the strength he
instilled in his family and friends. He will be deeply missed, but his spirit will continue to shine
brightly in the lives of all who knew him.
