Joann Sullivan Scott, age 81 passed away peacefully at home July 10, 2014. Joann was born in Tyler, Texas on August 20, 1932.
She is preceded in death by her parents Vernon Reid Sullivan and Gladys Turner Sullivan, sister Virginia Sue Sullivan and her favorite Aunt Mrs. Virginia Baker.
A wonderful childhood and good education was provided by the Tyler public schools, Tyler Jr. College, North Texas University, and The Feather Art School of Houston.
She attended Tyler Jr. College and then came to Houston to attend The University of Houston central campus.
She received her Bachelor of Science in Education in May 1963 and her Masters Degree in Occupational Education in May 1991.
Ms. Scott is grateful to The University of Houston for the opportunities provided her, her Aunt Virginia Baker and daughter Debra Bloch, all graduates of the University.
Joann was employed by Lockheed Electronics from 1964-1971 as a member of the Science Support Team of NASA's Apollo 11, supporting the astronauts with the first lunar landing. 1971, she began a career with Houston ISD 's Occupational Awareness Program, educating elementary school children about the world of employment. In 1980, Mrs. Scott began a career in the Oil and Gas industry and worked for companies including Michael T. Halbouty, International Field Data, Longhorn Oil and Gas and Michigan-Wisconsin Pipeline then to work for the Texas A&M Engineering Extension Service. In 1988, Mrs. Scott re-joined Houston ISD writing Federal Funding grant applications successfully winning large grants to further HISD, retiring in 1996.
Joann served as a Board Member with The Rainard School for Gifted Children, President of the Board of Directors for Bayou Bend Townhomes Association and was Vice President of The Gulf Coast Chapter of the American Mensa Association. She is named in five "Who's Who of American Women" for her outstanding achievements in community service. She also served as a member of the American Society of Training and Development, National Society for Performance and Instruction, Houston Geological Society, Project Management Institute, a Lifetime member of The University of Houston Alumni Association and also taught classes through Leisure Learning.
Joann leaves behind her beloved daughter, Debra Ann Bloch. She is also survived by her nephew, Michael David Fletcher and wife Jo of Baton Rouge, LA, cousins Margie Lile, Pat Teague, their mother Annelle Smith of Spring Texas and their families. Her extended family and friends she remembers with much gratitude and love, Jean Kopp, Gary and Linda Kubena, Joan Davenport, Cindy and Justin Freeman, Ramona Pickle and her daughters. Loyal and trusted friends, Tiney Taylor, Gem Smith, Floy Vieweg, Faith Collins, Bernadine Miller, The Ladies of Texas Gulf Producing and many more friends who brought her endless joy and added so much to the quality of her life.
A memorial service will be held at Unity Church, 2929 Unity Dr. in Houston, on Thursday, July 17, 2014 at 1:00 p.m.
