Phyllis Lee Dreyfus Schaffer passed away of natural causes at Seven Acres on Saturday, November 26, 2016 at the age of 90. She was born February 20, 1926 in New Orleans to Julie & Marcel Dreyfus. After her parents divorced when she was very young, her mother moved to Houston to start a new life, while Phyllis lived with relatives in New Orleans, and McComb & Hattiesburg, MS. She eventually moved to Houston, where she lived for the rest of her life. After graduating from San Jacinto High School in 1942, she worked as a teller at a bank that eventually became the Texas Commerce Bank.
She met Eli Schaffer on a double-date in 1947 (they were not each other's dates), and they were married on May 9, 1948. Over the next 8+ years they had 4 sons, and while raising 4 boys is never an easy task, she raised her sons with a strong hand. So much so that her friends referred to her as "Sarge."
In 1983 Phyllis helped Eli start up the family business, Schaffer Mechanical, where she managed the accounting department until retiring in 2012. She loved being with her family, and was especially supportive of the careers of her sons, her daughters-in-law, and her grandchildren. She was very generous, and enjoyed socializing with people of all ages.
Phyllis is pre-deceased by her husband of 58 years, Eli; and is survived by her sons, Mark, Robert, Jeffrey & Jack; daughters-in-law, Barbara, JoAnn, Denise & Suzy; grandchildren, Anne-Elisa Yeager & husband Jared, David Schaffer & wife Anne, Jared Schaffer, Alyssa Schaffer, Lauren Schaffer, Jeremy Schaffer, Michael Schaffer, Jonathan Schaffer, Shelly Schaffer & Alexander Schaffer; and great-grandchildren, Tesla & Rex Yeager.
The family would like to thank caregivers Doris, Shirley and others for the love & caring they showed to her in the last days of her life.
The funeral will be on Tuesday November 29, 2016 at 3:00 PM at the Emanu El Memorial Park, 8341 Bissonnet.
