Walter Marx Obituary

WALTER ARNOLD MARX, WALTER ARNOLD MARX, resident of Houston, Texas since 1958, died at Spring Shadows Pines on Monday, January 3, 2005. He was born in Hollandale, Mississippi on December 31, 1925, raised in the Methodist Church, and graduated from Hollandale High School. Walter loved to hunt and had an avid interest in engines. He asked to be in the black gang when he joined the United States Navy during World War II. He served on the Clarence L. Evans, Destroyer Escort 113. Following World War II, he was a diesel-engine apprentice with Fairbanks, Morse, & Company. He repaired diesel engines in power plants for several years, then sold diesel engines and eventually became a regional manager for Fairbanks' (later Colt Industries') engine division. He married Kathleen McGinty on December 27, 1948 in Clinton, Mississippi and lived in Memphis and over 30 states before coming to Houston. He was active in the Republican Party, civic club, and the Katy Elk's Lodge #2628. Walter is preceded in death by his wife; his parents, Edwin Winfield and Mary Vest Marx; brother, Robert Edwin Marx; and son-in-law, Rodney Wayne Bridges. He is survived by his daughter, Suzon Kathleen Bridges; daughter, Patricia Annette Jung and husband, Ted; son, Walter Arnold Marx, Jr. and wife, Angela; granddaughter, Gretchen Kathleen Jung; grandson, Walter Arnold Marx, III (Trey); sister, Mary Bernice Heritage Simpson; sister, Virginia M. Carr; sister-in-law, Rosa Lee Thornton; sister-in-law, Flora McGinty Perkins; sister-in-law, Mavis Loyd Thornton; sister-in-law, Myrtle Bryant Isonhood. Visitation will be held Friday, January 7, from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm at Woodlawn Funeral Home, 1101 Antoine, Houston. Funeral service will be held 10:00 am Saturday, January 8, at Fair Haven Methodist Church, 1330 Gessner, followed by burial at Woodlawn Garden of Memories, Inc. and reception at Fair Haven. Pallbearers: Jack D. Ashabranner, Ed J. Duliban, Dole Johnson, Joe Johnson, Frank Perkins, Ormonde Smith and Hank Williams.
