Liliane Covington Obituary

Published by Harley Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc. on Mar. 3, 2015.
Liliane L.B. Covington, 98, widow of Philip S. Covington, former Professor of English, Dean and Acting President of Wofford College, died on Tuesday, February 24, 2015 at Wesley Commons, Greenwood. Born in Minneapolis, MN, she was a daughter of the late Fernand and Helene Van Haerlem Lhoest. Her father was a noted classical musician who schooled his daughter to play first the violin, then the oboe, which she played professionally during a long career (1936-1965) in the Warner Bros. Studio Orchestra. Her music still lives on the soundtracks of movies such as Casablanca and Gone with the Wind. After retiring, she married Philip Covington and moved from Hollywood to Spartanburg, SC, where they lived happily for many years on the Wofford campus and were former members of Central Methodist Church and faithfully attended Sunday School. She was a member of Main Street United Methodist Church, Greenwood. Survivors include a stepson, Philip Covington, a retired Foreign Service Officer living in Rome, Italy; stepdaughters, Anne Powell of Orlando, FL, Frances Broome of Spartanburg, SC, and Catherine Miller of Lancaster, PA; and many step-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her son, David M. Black. A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. Thursday in Asbury Hall at Wesley Commons, with the Rev. Carol Peppers Wray officiating. Harley Funeral Home and Crematory (www.harleyfuneralhome.com) is in charge of arrangements.

I am saddened to learn Liliane Covington has passed away. Thankfully, her oboe can still be heard on many iconic Warner Bros. motion picture and cartoon soundtracks!
