Dear family and friends of Mr. Case:

I only "knew" Mr. Case from his writings as "Doghouse Reily," yet I am saddened that his bright voice and spirit are gone from the internet. His writings were a joy and a smile and a quirk to read about the foibles of this world, and also a warm fellow feeling that another in this world appreciated the work of Raymond Chandler.

I'm so sorry for your loss.

Go with the gods.
Or failing that, please go with Chandler as a welcomed friend. You are much missed, Doghouse, much missed.

Deb...I am writing this from Bali after reading the obituary online and wanted you to know how much I ache for you from afar. What a guy you were lucky to have and vice versa. And the beautiful tributes from Doug's fans is overwhelmingly awesome. What a testimonial for his huge contribution to humankind. I wrote Gari Williams a note and she said how much she respects you as a teacher and as a person. I second that.
Heart hugZ..want to see you when I return from Bali in September.

R.I.P. Dog....you had the ascerbic wit of H.L. Menkin, and creative cryptic political/cultural vision a Hunter S. Thompson. You will be sorely missed by your blog readers - but particulary your family and loved ones.

I enjoyed and learned much from his blogging under "Doghouse Riley." It was one of my daily stops and the world will be poorer for his absence. Please accept my condolences to his family in their time of grief and my gratituded for what he gave us.

I am stunned and saddened. Like so many here, I only knew Douglas through the wonderful mind and heart manifest in his writing, which he infused with such humor and humanity that I never missed a word of it. I hope this testament from strangers like me from all over this virtual world will be some small consolation for his wife and family. My sincere condolences for your loss.

Family, I knew him only as "Doghouse," the great and always incisive blogger. Your loss is immensely greater, of course, but the entire state has lost one of its geniuses.

My sincerest condolences to the family. I hope they know how many people he touched and made to think and laugh through his work on the web. His circle of admirers, friends and occasional adversaries is larger than any of us can know and we will all miss him.

August 2, 2013

His writing under Doghouse Riley, the wit and humanity and decency, helped me through a long illness when recovery was uncertain. I owe him a lot, though we never met.

May whatever tiny solace this brings to his family be a small part of repaying that debt. My deep condolences.

Just got the news in London, when Charles Pierce checked in from his vacation to share the news and offer condolences. A nice tribute from great writer to great writer. What a loss. He helped keep us sane in an increasingly insane world.

My deepest condolences to his family, and the blogging world. He made me interested in Indiana politics, and made me laugh, grin, gape at his flaying of pompous pundits. Jon Swift Steve Gilliard, there's this guy you gotta meet.. Goodbye, sir...

I, too, was a huge fan of Mr. Case in his blog persona, Doghouse Riley. I want to extend my sympathies to his wife, who he loved so deeply and who he talked about so wonderfully on the blog. I have exchanged comments and jokes and quips with "Dog" so many times, over the last few years I, like so many others, felt I knew him. I was shocked and so very, very, saddened to hear of his death. He will be terribly missed. My thoughts and prayers are with his wife and real life friends. He was a wonderful writer

This is heartbreaking. Doug was an unvarnished original on the internet -- funny, acerbic, erudite, insightful. I came across BLTR about three years ago and there haven't been more than a handful of days since then when I didn't check for a new post, looking forward to laughing, howling, marveling at an exquisitely turned passage. We've lost a treasure, and I extend my most heartfelt sympathies to Debra and the rest of his family.

I am so sorry to hear this. I and many many other people will miss him. This is so upsetting and disconcerting that I kind of want to go over to read his blog and see what his take on it is. I'll *always* want to know what his take on stuff is. My condolences to everyone.

My deepest condolences to Mr. Case's family and friends. I knew him through his wonderful writings and found them a frequent source of inspiration and humor. I especially enjoyed his insights on education, his stories about pets and any reference to his poor wife. I will miss him enormously and am grateful to the universe that I was able to know him through his writings.

Um, this is a little too much for my mirror, Dog. Even beyond enjoying your terrific prose on all things political, social, and cultural, I always felt a kinship about being the same age (b. 1953) and sharing much of the same cultural/historical experiences--musical and sports heroes in particular. I have this vision of you taking turns in the batting cage with Larry Doby, Richie Ashburn, and Smoky Burgess (Ted Williams went out for a milkshake and will be right back).

Hey! That one's in the gap and is headed for extra bases...

I was a huge fan of Mr. Case's blog -- he was a brilliant, funny, and amazingly talented writer. The internet will be a darker dungeon without him, and national politics an even more insufferable topic. I cannot imagine his family's grief. My condolences to anyone lucky enough to have known him personally. I'm sorry.

I am very, very sorry to hear this. I knew Mr. Case as "Doghouse Riley", and checked his blog every day. What a gift for words, what a feeling for the potential in people that gets sidetracked and stifled by the ignorance, venality, fear -- the failings that got the wicked, funny, ironic side of his tongue, and rightly so! We'll all be missing him for a long time.
