Bryan Hetrick Obituary

Bryan David Hetrick Died May 7, 2010. He was 48. Bryan was born Sept. 19, 1961 in Lafayette, Ind. He lived parts of his life in Omaha and Lincoln, Neb. as well as Fort Wayne, Colorado Springs, Connecticut and Arizona. He moved to Indianapolis in 1995. While in Lincoln for summer break from college in 1981, Bryan met the love of his life, Lori Jo Treu. They met at a public pool, where they worked as lifeguards. They were married in 1986. Bryan spent much of his youth in and around the water. As early as elementary school, he was a competitive swimmer, then took to the diving board. After graduating from Lincoln Southeast High School, he pursued intercollegiate diving at Cal State Long Beach before transferring to the University of Nebraska. After graduating, Bryan's passion for fitness had him working at a fitness center, selling Cannondale bicycles and competing in triathlons. One year, he completed the Liberty-to-Liberty Triathlon from the Statue of Liberty in New York City to the Liberty Bell in Philadelphia. Swimming the Hudson River was his least-favorite part. Nearing age 30, a time when some military personnel are ready to hang it up, Bryan decided he wanted to become a U.S. Navy SEAL. He applied, was accepted and was well into training when a bilateral hip injury led to an honorable-but-disappointing discharge—and a lifetime of chronic pain. In his post-military career, Bryan's joy of cooking led him to the kitchen. For many years, he managed restaurants and sold restaurant supplies. But he also had a passion for serving others. At the time of his death, he was helping U.S. military personnel with benefits issues as a Department of Defense employee. Bryan loved listening to music, driving fancy cars, collecting autographs, attending blues festivals, improving his home, riding his motorcycle and the Chicago Bears. More than anything, he loved Lori and their three children—Nate, Emma and Cole—all of whom survive him. Other survivors include Bryan's parents, Dave and Bonnie Hetrick; siblings Bruce Hetrick (Cheri O'Neill), Karl Hetrick (Shannon) and Josette Hetrick; mother-in-law Betty Treu; brothers-in-law Adam Treu (Tracy) and Mark Treu (Chris), best friend Ken Hammer, and many nieces and nephews. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Fri., May 14 at Pius X Parish, 7200 Sarto Dr., Indianapolis. Memorial service will be on Sat., May 15 at 11 a.m., with lunch following. In lieu of flowers, memo rials may be made to the Nate, Emma and Cole He trick Education Fund, co Huntington Bank, Lake wood Village Banking Of fice, 6830 Lake Plaza Dr., Indianapolis, IN 46220.
