Danny Hammond Obituary

Danny J. "Doc" Hammond

76, was born in the charming small Indiana town of Liberty Mills on June 20th, 1939 to the late Jack and Ferol Burkett Hammond. His birth date landed on his Mother's Birthday and she was known to say often that he was the best birthday present she ever received.

He had an idyllic childhood that he loved to reminisce about, and it served to instill the values that he held throughout his life - The love of and great loyalty to family, friends, and fun. He followed in his respected Father's footsteps to open a barber shop after serving in the US Army. He was an entrepreneur at heart and always had a new idea for a restaurant/bar or how to market his mother's chili dog recipe or his famous chicken salad.  He was magically drawn to the sun and water and loved the family lake house and the Ft. Myers Beachfront condo, spending many happy days there.

If you were to just say the name "Doc" in the Indianapolis area, most would know who you were talking about. He had wonderful lifelong friends from every walk of life and he was a tribute to the beauty and strength of friendship. He was wise, modest, engaging, warm, and really funny! If you spent time with him, his favorite singer, Frank Sinatra was always playing in the background. His first daughter was born on Sinatra's birthday so of course the name 'Frank' was the frontrunner name for his beautiful baby girl until he was outvoted……thankfully.

He passed away Friday, May 13th after a valiant fight against Liver Cancer.  The family would like to send special thanks to all of his wonderful staff at the VA Hospital who lovingly made his last days comfortable and very peaceful.

He was predeceased by his parents and his older brother Jim Hammond. Survivors are a favorite Aunt, Jean Renfroe, nieces and cousins.  He is survived by his most beloved possession - his (3) children Kristy (John) Frigge, Jason (Angel) Hammond, and Nicki (Austin) Roewe.  He was Papaw Doc to (6) amazing Grandchildren - Gus and Gabby Poulos, Jett and Maelynn Hammond, and Grover and Oliver Roewe.  He loved his children and grandchildren and was fiercely proud of the people they had become. To have been in his presence with his big smile and mischievous laugh was to have known grace, humility, integrity, and a pure heart. May that be the endowment he leaves behind to all who loved him.

The family will be receiving guests on Thursday, May 19th, 2016 at Lauck and Veldhof Funeral & Cremation Services, 1458 South Meridian Street, Indianapolis, 46225 from 11:00 a.m. with Funeral Services at 1:00 p.m. You are invited to read Doc's complete obituary at
