Ruby Henning Galloway

Ruby Henning Galloway Ruby Madonna Henning Galloway, 97, passed away peacefullyon April 22, 2016. Ruby, born March 3, 1919, was the daughter of Gilbert Denslow and Winifred Huffman Henning. She was the widow of the late Samuel J. Galloway. She was predeceased by a daughter, Anne Galloway Yates, and by her two sisters and three brothers. Ruby graduated from Effingham (Illinois) High School, where she was captain of debate, a member of the basketball and dance teams and the junior and senior homecoming courts. Although she had multiple college scholarship awards, World War II intervened, and Ruby chose training as an air traffic controller with the CivilAeronautics Administration, serving her country in Washington, D.C., Norfolk and Front Royal, VA. In 2012, Ruby was part of the South Carolina WWII Veterans Honor Flight trip to visit Washington, D.C. While visiting her sister after the war, Ruby met her future husband, the late Samuel Jackson Galloway, Lt. Colonel, U. S. Army Air Forces, who was returning from the European Theater of Operations, and they were married January 18, 1946. They lived in several cities during Sam's career as a CPA and partner with the public accounting firm of Arthur Andersen & Co., and retired to Sea Pines in 1977. Ruby enjoyed being part of the growing Hilton Head Island community and was involved with garden, bridge, and gourmet clubs and served as president of Holy Family Ladies Guild. She was a member of Daughters of the American Revolution, National Society of Pilgrims, and Colonial Dames. Ruby was most proud of her six children: Sharon Rovenstine (Steve), Jean Ruffin (Chuck), Elizabeth "Libby"Galloway(Rick Dextraze), Sam Galloway, Jr., (Sarah), Janet Nucci (Larry), and the late Anne Galloway Yates. Ruby is also survived by eleven grandchildren and three greatgrandchildren, many of whom made journeys from across the country to visit her during her last days. A Funeral Mass will be held on Friday, June 3, at Holy Family Catholic Church, Hilton Head Island, SC. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hospice Care of the Lowcountry, Holy Family Church, or Hilton Head Preparatory Arts Guild Fund (hhprep.org)
