James Heidenreich Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jun. 9, 2010.
MILWAUKEE - Surrounded by his loving family at his home, James L. Heidenreich dropped off the twig on Friday, June 4, 2010, at the age of 71, after a courageous battle with cancer. Jim was born in Chicago, Ill. March 9, 1939, son of the late William J. Heidenreich Jr. and Marie (nee: Knudsen) Heidenreich. He is survived by children, William J. (Amanda), Joseph N. (Pamela), Paula (John) King, Tina Frank, Kelly Heidenreich; and 14 grandchildren. Also surviving are brothers, K.W. (Joyce), Richard (Darlene); sisters, Janet (Dennis) Cranley, Laura Lee Frees, Karen (Robert) Everson, Joan (the late Paul) Duratny; very dear friend, Kristin Bogenberger; and many, many nephews and nieces. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers, George L., Robert J.; and sister, Dorothy Shumway. Jim was raised in Racine and attended St. Catherine's High School. He joined the United States Marine Corps, where he earned no medals, fought no wars, but he served proudly for three years. In 1967, he began working for the predecessor of the Milwaukee Transit System. He was a Driver, Union President of Local 998 of the Amalgamated Transit Union, and Station Clerk, retiring in 1996. During that time, he also served as Vice-President of the Milwaukee County Labor Council and was twice a Democratic candidate for the State Assembly. Jim then joined Johnson Bank in Downtown Milwaukee, where he was the Courier Banking Manager, retiring in March of 2009. A Memorial Mass will be celebrated Saturday, June 12, 2010, 11 a.m. at St. Anthony's Church, N74 W13604 Appleton Avenue, Menomonee Falls, with Rev. Dennis Wieland officiating. Relatives and friends may meet with the family Saturday at the church 9:30 a.m. until time of Mass. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Sixteen Inch Society, 735 North Water Street, #720, Milwaukee, Wis. 53202. The funds contributed will support the Jim Heidenreich Learning Center at the Repairers of the Breach. It was Jim's wish to be cremated. A "hooley" will be held after the Mass at Derry's Pub at 54th and Bluemound. The family wishes to extend their sincere gratitude to the Visiting Nurses Association for their loving and compassionate care. Sorry this is so late. Jim ("feets", he must have had size 14 boots) was in my unit (sales commissary) MCB Twenty Nine Palms, CA. He was a great friend and have many happy memories. I am so sorry that we were not able to get together after the corps. Semper Fi Jim, Edward Gorzynski, Jr.

I met Jim years ago while working on a state assembly race. I remember fondly his passion for politics, humor, kindness and integrity. I haven’t seen Jim in years, but I will never forget what a wonderful man he was. I am so sorry for your loss. I am sure he is smiling, talking politics, and enjoying a cigar in heaven!

I knew Jim for many years. There was no one that was more of a dedicated Union Man than Jim. He was a trusted advisor. He will be missed.

I'm honored to have called Jim a friend and lucky to have had his counsel. His wry wit and huge presence could fill a room. His contribution to local politics and honesty with a smile was a welcome breath of fresh air.

Sorry to hear of Jim's passing, he was one of the reasons I became a union official for Local 998. I hope that in Heaven they need a good steward for the angels union and he enjoys a big cigar.

To the family and friends of Jim, my prayers and thoughts are with you. While I did not get a chance to see Jim too much lately, will always remember him as a friend and good guy. More importantly, I will remember Jim as a true and dedicated representative of family, and always his union brothers and sisters.

I met Jim during the bus strike in 1978, while Jim was President of his local union, and put in a difficult position of settling a contract, respecting his membership and staying throughout...a man of his word. As the mediator trying to assist in this difficult situation, I can only say the task was much easier to deal with because of Jim's professionalism and respect for the collective bargaining process.

The Heidenriech family, their friends and all of Jim's union family have lost a special person and I know, will remember him always.

Jim and my dad were friends - he lived next door to us when I was young in Racine on Thurston Avenue - I remember him fondly as dad's horseshoe buddy. Sorry for your loss - he and dad are probably having a game of horseshoes right now.

My poem and song for a wonderful bus driver:
Rivers of Time (C) 72, 73, 85, EMJ.
by Emmett Michael Jordan
Rivers run, down their courses wide.
Unto sea's depth, till the end of time.
Sunlight beams, through an empty space.
Unto earth's ground, till the end of time.
Moonlight glowing, planets coursing.
Starlight shining, earth a-turning.
Tides reach out, for the sea shore's grasp.
Cleansing sand shoals, till the end of time.
Comets come, from the vast unknown.
Lighting dark sky, till the end of time.
Earth's valleys, bloom with flowers.
Tall pine trees, reach to skylight.
Oak forests, cover meadows.
Mist shrouds, the peaks of mountains.
Winds are rustling, through the willows.
Waters running, rains are falling.
Day and night, cycle back and forth.
Pulsing ever, till the end of time.
Shadow shapes, cover moonshine's light.
Cycling ever, till the end of time's end.
