Jan & I were deeply saddened with the passing of a dear friend. Sam Lewis, in every sense of the word, was truly a gentle man, a man of the highest moral courage, and a man of unquestioned integtrity. You can always tell the character of a person by the manner in which he communicates his heartfelt beliefs in your presence, and his ability to look you squarely in the eye during the course of a conversation.
Unfortunately, my association with Sam was only for a few short years. We were first introduced on the tennis court. As I recall, neither one of us was ever at the peak of our game, but the effort was always in evidence. The highlight of the evening was a gathering of the "boys" at "Sam's Club", better known to most of us as the Centennisl Bar & Grille. The usual bill of fare consisted of grilled salamon and a generous portion of fresh fruit. It evolved into an evening of congeniality. I came to know the true friend Sam was. Even during the latter years when health issues were a factor, Sam would nonetheless show up. I truly believe he made the trip for my benefit to be in my presence.
When I read the news of Sam's passing, my memory immediately returned to the gatherings in Door County with other mutual friends. It was always a pleasure to have Lloyd and Sam join us; it was as if the group was now complete.
Once again, I shall miss my true friend. As I said to Lloyd when I called her to offer our condolences, I offered the following: Sam was truly the salt of the earth; the Good Lord doesn't make them any better...
Lloyd, we extend our deepest sympathies during this time of sorrow.

I knew Sam through the Kiwanis Club of Milwaukee many years ago. He was a true, calm gentleman. I enjoyed discussing art and Door County with him. He framed the prints on my wall...I am very sorry for your loss.

Mark, John, and Mary, I saw the notice just today, and discovered about 6 hours too late to attend the memorial service today. I am so very sorry for your loss, your dad was a great, calm, loving man and I have many fond memories of him. I am so glad that I had the chance to run into him a few months ago - It was good to have a chance to give him a big hug, which I will cherish. I have so very many fond memories of your whole family, and how good to me you all were back in high school. I will keep all of you in my thoughts.
